Sunday 26-May-08Battersea Festival...
The bank holiday weekend saw THD pile down to Battersea Park to take part in the local festival - a chance to go on tour and still sleep on you bed being too good to not to attend.
While the hockey was important it very much took a back seat to the partying. The THD women were proudly wearing their pink hotpant / wife-beater combo kit while the men played in conventional kit during the day before 'smurfing up' for the evening event.
The results were very different for the two teams. The men's side (the Tomahawks) had a bit of a wobbly start but then managed to go on a winning run that saw them narrowly miss out on the final and ending up a respectable 3rd.
The women's side (the Hockey Dolls) had a bit of a rougher ride but put in a series of battling & stirling performances. Many games ended in a draw but those that didn't were nearly always settled by a one-goal margin. Indeed, the less said about the umpiring robbing them of a rightly earned penatly goal, the better. In the end they finished a creditable 9th place!
Finally, there are some photos from the weekend (not on the website yet - but soon to be)... please click here to see, amongst other things, the THD Smurfs! |

Monday 07-Apr-08End of Season dramas...
Nearly a full program of women's games at the weekend with the Womens 2s still hoping for promotion. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be. While they won their encounter - the results elsewhere meant they were pipped to a promotion spot by 1 point. However, the 6s finished with a flourish by beating league leaders Spencer to finish a respectable 6th.
Other games saw a thrilling 4-5 reverse for the 5s who nearly managed to upset UCL. Losses were also recorded for both the 3s and 4s in their respective matches.
Despite the Men finishing last week there was still drama to unfold. At the start of Saturday the Mens 1s were top of the table with 2nd to play 3rd - both sitting on 3 points below them. Sadly, the result of that match saw the winner - Banbury - take the top spot for the division on goal difference. Either way though, promotion for the 1s was guaranteed. Capping off a phenomenal season coming from relegation play-offs last year to automatic promotion this season! |

Sunday 30-Mar-08Champions & Challengers...
Congratulations are in order as the Mens 1s secured promotion at the weekend - but they still have a week to find out if it will be as Champions or Runners-Up. However, the news was not as good for the Womens 1s as, unfortunately, they were knocked out of the HA Trophy in the Semi-Finals against Bucks on Sunday.
The remaining women's fixtures saw wins for both the 2s - who still have hope of promotion - and the 6s who are, once again, ending the season with a flourish. The 3s secured a draw but both the 4s & 5s lost. The loss suffered by the 4s also saw their slim chance of promotion slip away.
With many of the Mens section finished the fixtures that remained were mainly dead rubbers. Only the 2s and 3s were in action and the results all went against the THD sides. In addition the 3s had been scheduled to play two games in one day but had to concede the second game due to availability problems.
In addition to the Womens 1s playing on Sunday, the Dragons were also in action. A rather pedestrian and lucklustre performance saw them soundly beaten by Sinners at Battersea Park. |

Saturday 15-Mar-08Heartbreak & Near Misses...
Promotion chasers the Mens 1s & Womens 2s both slipped up with a loss and a draw respectively. Making it go right to the wire... and dragging it out until after Easter. At the other end of the tables the Tornados avoided relegation after Richmond failed to beat Hampstead & Westminster but the Mens 2s lost which means that they are relegated.
The other mens sides in league action saw the 3s soundly beaten by Chiswick - ending their hopes of a play-off place. The Royals went down to Richmond - a match that was mainly notable for the farcical umpiring provided by Richmond.
The womens section saw the 1s lose out on their bid to grab 2nd place as they went down 1-0 to Sunbury. The 3s also lost but the 4s maintain a hope of promotion by soundly beating Purley 3-0. Both the 5s and 6s also won their matches.
In Sunday's fixture the Dragons took on Oldsmiths in the rain to end up with a feisty 3-3 draw. |

Thursday 13-Mar-08Wearing Red Helps you Win...
Reuters published the following story this week that was picked up by many of the major news agencies...
[Extracts from uk.Reuters.com] Academics at Durham and Plymouth universities said their research shows that a player's biological response to the color red, a "testosterone-driven signal of male quality", has helped football teams to success.
As well as boosting the players, the color could also help bring in the ticket and memorabilia-buying fans, who are becoming more crucial now that success in the beautiful game depends on how much cash clubs have to pay for top players.
"Over time supporters may have been subconsciously more attracted to a club wearing red, so the club has developed an increasing resource base within its community," said Robert Barton, a professor at Durham University.
After studying English football league results since 1945, the academics concluded that teams who wear these colors were likely to win the fewest games.
So it would seem, that despite some of this year's results and if the results can be translated across to hockey, Tulse Hill & Dulwich have an advantage by wearing red. However, some could wonder if the club has become less succesful since adding green at the expense of some red to the strip as a result of the merger... time will tell!!!

Tuesday 11-Mar-08Mens 1s & Womens 2s hunt promotion...
Vital wins this weekend saw both the Mens 1s & Womens 2s keep the hunt on for promotion, while the Mens 2s revitalised their fight to avoid the drop.
The Tornados & Diamonds wrapped up their season at the weekend, with the former having to rely on results elsewhere on the 15th to avoid relegation. The 3s got a last minute walkover and the Royals slipped to 2-7 loss away to Spencer.
The Womens section also saw wins for the 1s and 5s. Unfortunately, the 3s, 4s and 6s all lost their encounters.
No match for the Dragons this weekend but they are back in action next Sunday. |

Sunday 02-Mar-0839 goals step up the pressure...
A massive 39 goals from THD this weekend! Some very important results at both ends of the tables but in many cases just a goal seperated celebration from heartbrake.
A 3-2 win saw the Mens 1s extended their lead to 6 points at the top of the table with only 9 more points left to play for. The Tornados had a goal disallowed in the 70th minute and had to settle with a draw and relegation being decided in next week's match against Spencer. Whereas the Men 2s lost by 1 goal and look like they are headed for Div 2 next season.
In the remaining games the Mens 3s secured safety with a comfortable win over hapless Wimbledon 4-2. But both the Diamonds and the Royals were on the wrong side of goal fiestas losing 2-7 and 1-10 respectively.
The Womens 2s scored an average of a goal every six and a half minutes to win 11-0. The 1s only manged to win 50% of their double header weekend and lost out to Surbiton on Sunday. Both the 3s and the 5s won their matches, but the 6s didn't.
Sunday saw the Dragons come back from 2 goals down to win 6-2 against the London Strollers. |

Sunday 24-Feb-08League and Cup action hots up...
As the business end of the season approaches various teams are swinging from elation to dispair on a weekly basis. The Mens 1s win again and are now just a few games away from promotion. The Womens 1s league form continues to disappoint but their Trophy form takes them into the Semis. The Tornados keep safety alive with a win against Teddington while the Mens 2s slip up in their "must-win" tie and are perilously close to the drop.
Elsewhere in the Men's Section the 3s weren't in action but the Diamonds also pulled out an impressive 4-3 win while the Royals took an 8-0 pasting from Maidenhead.
The Women's section saw early season favourites - the 2s - slip up again. Promotion seems very unlikely for them now. Both the 3s & 4s drew with 2-2 score draws. While both the 5s & 6s won their games 4-1 & 2-0 respectively.
To round up Sunday's games the Dragons put out two sides - both League & Trophy. The league team won 6-5 in an 11 goal thriller but the Trophy side were undone by an uncharacteriscically poor first half that saw them crash out as 5-0 losers to an average Stevenage team. Back in Dulwich the Womens 1s marched comfortably into the Trophy Semi-Finals by putting St Ives to the sword. |
