In this week's Tribune, we have all the action from the matches at the weekend and two of the friendly matches from the week before.
It was a winning start for a few of our teams. Congratulations especially to the newly-minted Saracens. Hot off the press, they picked up three points at a tough away fixture at Southgate. The Women's 1s and 2s also started on a fine note. They notched up huge 5-0 and 4-1 wins respectively.
A few of our other teams suffered defeats. Given that there have been quite a few new players, and everyone is still adapting to the new rules, I would expect a few games before everyone gets back to winning ways.
Also, ladies and gents, don't forget to enjoy the third half. It would be great to see everyone back at the Clubhouse after home games. Let's maintain the great post-match atmosphere from last season!
May this season bring all of you much playing success and more memorable off-pitch antics.

The Annual General Meeting of Tulse Hill & Dulwich Hockey Club is to be held on Mon 19th October at 8pm in the Dulwich Sports Club Clubhouse, Burbage Road, London SE24.
This year's meeting is particularly important as there are a lot of changes that need to be approved - these changes are mainly to do with how we run the club. The way we govern the club is controlled by our memorandum and articles. There are a number of legal changes that the club has to incorporate as well as some other changes to tidy up how we work.
For the first time, those unable to attend have the option this year to vote by proxy form. Members can either appoint the chairman of the meeting or any other person they know (who will be attending) to vote as they direct on the form - please follow the instructions on the form - all queries to secretary@thehockeyclub.co.uk. Proxy forms can be submitted electronically to secretary@thehockeyclub.co.uk - if so no later than 5pm on Saturday 17th October.
In addtion to this there will be the usual business of approval of last year's accounts and election/re-election of the club's directors & officers.
Please make your vote count!!!
All the relevant documents can be downloaded from the links below...
Notice of AGM
Proxy form
Accounts for year ended 30 April 2009
New articles of association - clean
New articles of association - blacklined against the 2002 articles
The main changes are summarised below...
(a) Termination of membership (para 6.1.3) – members may be removed if they are arrears on payment of subs after 3 months (previously 6). In addition a new clause would be added to confirm that if members do not pay subs in the following season then they are deemed not to be members from that point on (6.1.5).
(b) General meetings (including AGMs) can now be called on 14 clear days notice (previously 21) due to changes brought in by the CA 2006) (para 8).
(c) Members must be entitled to appoint proxies to attend meetings (para 8.10). Going forward this will simplify the logistics for approving the accounts – which will continue to be approved at an annual general meeting. Amendments to para 9 to clarify when subsequent AGMs must be held following the accounting reference date.
(d) The directors considered that the officers of the club should be appointed before the end of the previous season as it was preferable for the new officers to be in place prior to the summer break. Therefore the requirement to appoint officers at the AGM would be removed. Instead the directors would be able if they wished to call an informal members meeting or directors meeting to which any member could be invited so as to appoint those members as the new officers. Correspondingly the ability to appoint new officers would be reserved to the directors (para 10.6 deletion and amendment to 26).
(e) Director’s removal – it was agreed that a director could be removed from office if he failed to attend 3 meetings without permission and the remainder of the board resolved that his office be terminated (para 17.3).
(f) Appointment of secretary – the directors retain the power to appoint a secretary of the Club, but this is a voluntary requirement and no longer as required by CA 2006 (para 21.1).
(g) Notices – additional language included to permit communication with members by website (paras 33 and 34). The directors noted that for these provisions to operate properly, members must confirm consent to have such communications posted on the website, and supply the Club with an appropriate email address such that communications can be made electronically. These requirements are fulfilled so far as each member completes the information form supplied to all members on Club Day.

Mens 1s vs. London Wayfarers: Lost 0-4
No match report.
Next match: Home vs. Chichester
Pre-season friendly, 19 Sept
Mens 2s vs. Old Loughtonians 2s: Won 1-2
The last few weeks have been a bit of a pre-season blur of painful training sessions, cancelled games, and explanation after explanation of the new rules; needless to say, we were quite keen to get out there on Saturday and simply play some hockey.
Things looked promising. The sun was shining, we were on Old Loughts' preferred water-based pitch, and we'd just seen the Diamonds rack up the first THD win of the day on before us. A lacklustre warm-up and a rousing team-talk later and we started well, making some decent moves into the opposition half, only once or twice threatening the D. To be honest, that's about all I can remember and we went into the half time chat at 0-0.
The second half showed more of the same, lots of forward movement but lacking that killer touch - that is until Adam, kindly putting in a cameo performance for the day, picked Darren out from across the pitch, who carried quickly into the D and looked for Fez in front of goal. Fez stole in front of two markers to pick the ball up and then one touch, two touch, keeper wrong-footed, ball hits backboard. Bang, 1-0.
A string of oppo short corners and saves from Sheldon kept the defence busy for the following 10 minutes before finally, one got through from a broken down short corner. 15 minutes left, 1-1 - and the momentum was definitely with Old Loughts. We pushed forward but were often vulnerable on the break, forcing Sheldon to make countless more saves. Truth be told, it was difficult to see a winner and if it had been a league game, some people would have taken the draw then and there.
Then, with just three or four minutes left on the clock, Adam split the pitch in two with a huge chuck over the top. The defender closed ground quickly and was under the aerial first, but caught a thick outside edge, allowing the ball to spill behind him and into the circle. As the keeper charged to clear on the half-volley, Tim nicked in and pulled the ball away, moved it onto his reverse and calmly buried the ball into the deserted net. 2-1, final score.
It could have been theirs but for the performance of a lifetime from Sheldon (a deserved and unanimous man of the match) and a couple of well-stolen opportunities, but frankly that doesn't matter - a win is a win. Lots to work on as you would expect from a pre-season game, lots of positives as well and to go into the season with a win against another team in our league. For the detail enthusiasts out there, our warm-down consisted of trawling the pitch to pick up all of Andy Jarratt's toys.
Let the games begin. (TS)

Next match: Away vs. Surbiton 3s
Mens 2s vs. Surbiton 3s: Lost 1-3
Fresh from our pre-season victory over same-league oppo Old Loughts, we went into the first game of the season with a sense of purpose and an air of confidence. We were immediately put in our place by a well organised, well drilled, physical Surbiton side who owned the first half and created a lot of solid chances. For our part, we looked incredibly dangerous on the break and if it weren't for their goalie having the reactions of a spider monkey and the speed of a mongoose, we well might have scored a couple of our own - as it was, we went into our half-time huddle 2-0 down.
It must be mentioned at this stage that Sheldon was having yet another blinding performance between the sticks and stopped them from having a lot more on the score-sheet than they did; and also that Lady Luck smiled on us a little at one point, allowing Sheldon to watch a harshly awarded penalty stroke bounce harmlessly off the left hand post to safety.
Still, second half and we had it all to do. We emerged a new team, and took the game straight to Surbiton. As we had in the first half, we took them to pieces almost every time we broke at speed, playing some quite frankly beautiful passing hockey up the field and their keeper had a lot more to do than perhaps the scoreline suggests, but we were unable to break our duck - that is, until Spec charged through the middle, drawing about three defenders out of position before feeding the ball to Timmy who fed it past the keeper to cut the deficit in half.
We were looking strong, and had Surbiton on the back foot. As with Old Loughts the week before, when the press was put into practice properly it gave them very little to aim at and they were forced time and time again to play the ball out of bounds, giving us every chance to attack. Unfortunately, we were unable to convert these chances into more goals, the best chance falling to Spec who had a certain equaliser cleared off the line by the marauding Potty.
They scored again towards the end and despite pegging them back for the remainder of the match, we went down to 10 men through some poorly-timed dissent from the bench and the final whistle came too soon. Next week, we face Wimbledon 3s who we came up with last year, and will be looking to secure our first points of the season. (GH)

Next match: Home vs. Wimbledon 3s, 1400hrs, DC
Mens 3s vs. PHC Chiswick 2s: Drew 4-4
No match report.
Next match: Away vs. St Albans Senators, 1500hrs
Tornados vs. Surbiton 5s: Won 4-0
It was a glass half full, half empty kind of game. Against a poor Surbiton team that rarely looked like creating much, the Men's 4s struggled into half time with a 1-0 lead, having given the ball away time and again, lacking width and options and two of the weakest short corners (our only two) you're likely to see that don't involve the Men's 2s.
Conversely, a battling performance on a hot day on a pitch that had more in common with the lower Sahel than a proper hockey surface saw four good goals (three deflections from balls in from Pully on the right and a well-taken strike from Zesh for our second - with thanks to some poor umpiring leading to confusion in the opposition ranks), a clean sheet and a level of organisation not normally seen until Christmas.
We started well and found lots of space around a young, poorly organised side, but our weak passing (direction, decision making, power) saw regular turnovers and no sustained pressure. We then allowed frustration to stop our progress for 10 minutes and made Surbiton look capable. Some sensible tactical changes and valid advice saw us up our performance and get a goal before half time.
We came out for the second half well aware of where we needed to improve and, to be fair, we did. Better shape, better directed passes and a work-rate that showed up our younger opponents made up for our continued determination to give the ball away. Some great debuts from our youthful influx means that the Tornadoes should be capable of playing a higher tempo game this season should the need arise. By the end, we were sufficiently in control for both MJ and Charlie to fire off their now conventional weak and ill-directed shot 'on goal'.
Special mention for Rich, who had to pull out at the last minute due to a 'stubbed toe'. Next week brings on our bogeymen from last season, the 5s - time to shake off a bad performance habit against them, and judging from Saturday's performance, we've every chance of doing that. A positive start to a new league season. (CK)
Squad: Si Bailey, Charlie, MJ, Tom, Wilsh, Pully, Big Fish, Little (relatively) Fish, James Casey, Ben Protheroe, Rob Tuer, Alex Bristow, Zesh Sadique

MOTM: Rob Tuer
TFC: Ben Protheroe
Next match: Home vs. THD Diamonds, 1100hrs, JAGS
Diamonds vs. Old Loughtonians 4s: Lost 1-3
First league game, first loss out of the way. But plenty to be positive about against an OLs side who are bound to be somewhere near the top in six months time. We pinned them back for long periods with sharp build-up play, but rarely found that incisive final pass to create a good opening. New Diamond Joe looked particularly promising up front, but we have to learn how to play with someone fast there. (BD)
Squad: Stephen Butcher, Tom Illingworth, Simon Canter, Billy Dowie, Graeme Evans, Adam Smith, Marc Antoine, Stephen Ireton, Sam Younger, James Perrott, Irfan Begg, Tim Harris, Joe Del Greco
Scorers: Stephen (Ireton, not Butcher - that would have merited a paragraph)
Umpires: Wes Cole & John Holmes
Next match: Away vs. THD Tornados, 1100hrs, JAGS
Pre-season friendly, 19 Sept
Royals + Saracens vs. Old Loughtonians Academy: Lost 0-1
With new seasons come new starts and new beginnings. With new personnel, friendly matches are of course ideal time to get to know new colleagues, familiarise with new strategies and become re-accustomed with the old. Players and umpires alike, on the first day of this new season, will be thrown into the melting pot of hockey leagues with whatever preparation and knowledge of the rules they can have accrued in such short weeks. The potential for next weekend is potent, and promising.
It is better sometimes to stretch ourselves in dealing with the one by putting us up against more challenging teams, as we did on Saturday. To that extent, experimentation - such as pitting players who have not picked up a hockey stick in 15 years against opponents who 15 years ago were little more than a glint in a heavily fortified eye - can be key.
We were coming to grips with the fact that the team we had that left the pitch at Dulwich College on 4 April this year, victorious in battle and gracious in triumph, would never again take the field together. Learning that the irreplaceable solidity of our midfield would take time to replace; that the speed and finesse with which we once graced the hockey pitch would take time to recover; that the daring, threatening potential that we possessed is still there, only slightly hidden; that we are wiser, swifter in thought and cleverer in movement than we were in bygone days.
Of the match? Who knows - we were okay in patches. A vast chasm existed between defence and the rest of the pitch, which we began to close more as the game went on. And we threatened the opposition goal several times, but breached it not.
But it was only a friendly. (MA)
Squad: Ben Slater (c), Jon Bayliss (c), Jeremy Porter, Keith Howick, Robbie Fleck, Ed Taylor Jones, Adrian Leung, Adam Bond, Mark Humphreys, Michael Silverleaf, Ollie Clark, Rupert Huxter, Charlie Davenport, Ian Townsend, Ladi Oloyede, Mark Annear (16)
Scorers: One of theirs
MOTM: Surprisingly, Ed Taylor Jones, who combined well from left half with his wingers and covered his left back solidly, and made numerous forays into the opposition 23 and D. An honourable mention too for Keith "Ken" Howick, who managed to avoid battering his ankle with a cricket bat this summer and instead reminded us that there is indeed Only One.
TFC: Ed Taylor Jones, a bit of windy miller in the D and a couple of mislaid penalty corner stops; and with a (dis)honourable mention for Ben Slater, for a bit more milling in the D and for scuffing some gilt-shaped opportunities on goal.
Umpires: Both theirs
Next match: Royals: Home vs. PHC Chiswick 5s, 1100hrs, DC
Next match: Saracens: Away vs. Southgate Goblets
Royals vs. PHC Chiswick 5s: Lost 2-3
Alas, though excellent for the majority, being surprisingly incisive and with multiple chances on goal, we did not prevail. Our midfield, combining the thrust of Zesh Sadique with the savoir faire of Rob Thomas and the welcome battling of Geoff Martin, fought long and mostly encouragingly against blue shirted masses; our defence snuffed out - somehow - most of what came our way to snuff out; our attack, led by the new improved Ben Protheroe and the energetic Ollie Norris, created much, but lacked that final sector potency which can turn frustrating almost into satisfying victory.
Success overall remained elusive - unluckily perhaps. Unlucky in that their three goals all came as the result of three fortunate shots at goal - out of perhaps five for them in total - whereas our chances seemed to number far more. Unlucky in that, whereas last year against this opposition we had come back from behind three times to seal a point, their third goal in this came so late we had not the chance to convert another fight back.
But as so often I write in these pages, to a great extent you write your own luck. We could have come into this match knowing more about each other than we did - just five remained from the squad of sixteen against Old Loughtonians a week earlier; just six from last year's squad of 21 took the field on Saturday. We could have been fitter - Chiswick clearly had the collective beating of us on that score in the final ten minutes. We could have made more of our own chances.
That should be the story of this match - we gave them too much to work with, and failed to work with what we had. Clearly, there is much that we can improve on. Our hockey destiny this season is very much in our hands. (MA)
Squad: Jon Bayliss (c), Jeremy Porter, Adrian Leung, Adam Bond, Ollie Norris, Ben Protheroe, Mark Jones, Zesh Sadique, Rob Thomas, Laurie Shotton, Geoff Martin, Ollie Furlong, Mark Annear (13)
Scorers: Rob Thomas (a screaming reverse stick effort from top of the D), Ben Protheroe (a good deflection to round off an excellent cross from Ollie Norris)
MOTM: Rob Thomas, mostly for his goal but also a creditable all-round performance; mentions also for Jeremy Porter and Ollie Furlong.
TFC: Mark Jones, for a little bit of self-umpiring and proudly displaying a little bit too much flesh at half-time; mentions also for Ben Protheroe, Geoff Martin (revealing of vote in secret ballot) and Mark Annear.
Umpires: Aidan Brock and Tim Sylvester
Next match: Away vs. Spencer Spitfires, 1630hrs
Saracens vs. Southgate Goblets: Won 2-0
A winning start for TH&D's newest team. What more could one ask for? On a hot and windless day in Southgate our intrepid adventurers gathered, having travelled from far and wide by train, tube and car for the late afternoon push back.
Playing against a development team who were considerably smaller, younger and more skilful than us we were on the ropes in the opening salvos. However once we started remembering each others names, things settled and we hit them on the break, Ollie slotting home after a slick passing move. Our fitness (?) held in the second half and we continued absorbing the pressure, the second goal a carbon copy of the first. A couple of stone per man lighter (it was scorchio, ask poor James in goal) we departed for our respective evenings' entertainments, limbs aching but with smiles on our faces - job done. (AB)
Squad: James Tabor (GK), Charlie Davenport, Rupert Huxter, Ben Holton, Ed Taylor-Jones, Ali Bullock, Nick Weller, Ed Taylor-Jones, Ollie Walton, Ryan Collingwood, Fents, Aido
Scorers: Ollie Walton (2)

Womens 1s vs. Eastcote 1s: Won 5-0
Fair to say that our pre-season build up has been far from ideal. Somehow we ended up getting all together on Saturday for the first time since April, and William was in plaster from the knee down after surgery on a tendon. If there is anything funnier than an exasperated Will screaming at us from the confines of a camping chair on the sideline, let me know.
Somehow we still managed to hand out a 5 nil drubbing of Eastcote, with the contest more or less over by half time after we had clinically taken our chances to make it 4-nil. Admittably we weren't so hot hockey wise in the second half, but it was very hot weather wise so we seemed to have collectively decided to walk about the pitch, which can't have helped. More of that going forward and it shall be a fun season.(EJB)
Squad: Dulcie Davies, Alex Crawford, Kath Sowter, Clare Byrne, Jen Thomas, Annabel Owen, Rachel Wheeler, Faye Billing, EJ Barry, Rebecca Jacobs, Angela Sheaden and Sharon Smith
Scorers: Sophie, Alex 2, Annabel and Angela
Next match: Away vs. Henley 1s, 1145hrs
Womens 2s vs. Cheam 1s: Won 4-1
THD Ladies 2s made a dream start to the season against a Cheam team who had finished a point above us at the end of last season as Beddoes struck a short corner perfectly into the bottom left hand corner within the first five minutes. This was closely followed by a goal from T-man who, as always, was causing the opposition all sorts of problems at centre forward. On a beautiful but hot September afternoon we made the most of DC's home advantage (lots of supporters much appreciated - thank you) and we went into half time with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Some tactical advice from Will and Gemma gave us a few things to work on for the second half but we were caught off guard from the start as Cheam scored a quick goal. However, we managed to regain control and, moving the ball confidently around the back as well as exploiting Jo and Cathy's pace and skill on both wings we managed to string together some flowing passing moves and frequently threatened Cheam's defence. Tash and Beddoes' silky skills in the D were rewarded with short corners on several occasions and they used their composure to successfully execute the "double 1".
Soon after we found ourselves 4-1 up as Jo's determination at the far post ensured my bizarre "pass" along the goal line (behind the goalkeeper. Duh!) was converted into goal number 4. The solid tackling and defensive organisation of Bee, Kate, Muldoon and Rosie along with some great saves by Olivia ensured that Cheam were not able to convert the chances they created.
A great team effort - we look forward to building on this next week to celebrate the eagerly awaited return of our captain. (RT)
Squad Olivia, Kate, Muldoon, Rosie LeVoir, Bee, Angela, Traffs, Beddoes, Harriet, Rosie Carter, Cathy, Tash, Jo
Scorers: Sarah Beddoes (2), Tash Barnes, Jo Walford
MOTM: Jo Walford

Umpires: Lou Campbell
Next match: Home vs. Old Kingstonian 1s, 1100hrs, DC
Womens 3s vs. Purley Walcountians 1s: Lost 0-2
Game one - Game on.
A new season with a new skipper - Georgie has taken the helm and our first outing was to Purley to play their 1s. With a mere 11 we took our positions with slight apprehension, well aware of Purley's youth, subs and a clip-boarded coach. We started strongly, stringing passes like we'd played together for years. Kate and Helen firing up the right with Julia battling hard in the middle. Several fruitless shorts later and they make a break but with the defence eager to get involved we regain possession with ease and just as Abbie clears the ball from the D - the ump signals a flick. Eh?! She claims it was a deliberate back-stick and that is automatically a flick. Eh?!
We did not notice the intentional back-stick and were extremely upset. Umpiring mistakes are sometimes made, and this is up there with the more unjustified and demoralising ones.
Grr half time - 1-0 down.
With a rousing team talk we come back fighting - we have all the possession (again), Alice and Georgie working the middle like a dream (again) - Megan holding the wing and the defence clearing the ball easily with the odd supersave from Ellie. It's dream-team stuff apart from our inability to score a goal. It's frustrating. We give them a short and they manage some lame scoopy thing that flies straight over all our heads into the net....2-0 Even more determined Anna, Helen and Linds take to the attack - nearly everyone on the pitch has a shot but sadly it wasn't to be. 2-0 it remained. (LM).

Womens 5s vs. Bank of England 1s: Lost 1-3
It was (some might say) a gloriously hot day for our first game of the season. A fresh new Womens 5s team arrived full of promise to our home pitch with many people making their club or team debuts. Excitement and nerves were high and as luck would have it we were sandwiched in between the Womens 1s and 2s games. Not only did this give us an excellent opportunity to see all those (thus far) elusive skills from training in action but it meant that there were lots of people around all afternoon for support. In particular it was a real treat to have Gemma step in as pitch side coach both before and during the game.
We started strong, holding back a tough opposition with plenty of attacking play. There was no score from either side for what seemed like ages (well into the second half) although we had definitely dominated the attacking play. Suddenly the ball was passed between red shirts up, in, out, across and finally slotted in by Vicky who for this and other efforts during the game was unanimously voted player of the match! We held this position for a long time but sadly it was not to be, the heat got to us, our energy waned and their umpire (who in our second half was our attacking umpire) failed to call any fouls in our favour resulting in the feeling of injustice from a loss of short corners, advantage etc which on another day might have seen us win the match. We will have to wait for the return match to try again but for the time being, despite the score line we had a good start to the season with plenty to work on. With special thanks to Gemma for her help and encouragement. (RM)
