There are three levels of coaching awards.

  1. Level 1 Assistant Coach Award

  2. Level 2 Coach Award

  3. Level 3 Advanced Coach

Only details of the Level 1 Assistant Coach Award can be found on this page. For more information on coaching or the specific England Hockey coaching courses then please go to the England Hockey website coaching section.

Level 1 VRQ Assistant Coach Award

This is the minimum qualification for those who are involved in hockey coaching sessions working 'normally' under supervision and it is intended to provide the essential skills and knowledge necessary to run a safe and enjoyable session for players to be introduced to the game.

Candidates must be a minimum of 16 years old to attend the course but should understand that they will not be permitted to coach independently. They can obtain insurance and practise in the role of Assistant Coach alongside a fully qualified adult. As part of the National Coaching Certificate the Level One is an assistant coach award and all Level 1 coaches will be able to coach normally under the supervision of a more senior coach.

Level 1 is suitable for those with some experience of playing hockey and perhaps with practice in helping in a coaching or teaching environment. The course length is a minimum of 21 hours contact time and is run over a minimum of three separate occasions.

A formal (summative) assessment is included within the course and the candidate will be informed after assessment if they have been awarded the qualification.

The candidate can expect the tutor to introduce:

  • basic techniques

  • principles of play

  • use of small-sided games

  • the rules of the game

  • underpinning theory knowledge

  • skills to create a safe, enjoyable and effective environment

Candidates are advised to gain an Emergency First Aid certificate and attend a scUK Good Practice and Child Protection Course as soon as possible following the course

Those licensed at Level 1 will not be entitled to coach independently, they should only coach those skills which they are qualified to coach. More advanced skills require additional training to ensure safe and effective coaching. It is appropriate for Level 1 coaches to be working with juniors, school teams and lower level club teams.
