Monday 29-May-06Women win Battersea Festival...
The invitational women's side captained by Charley Williams have once again won the Battersea International Festival. Despite a pretty average start on the Saturday the team turned it around to qualify from the group stages for the knockout phase. They eventually retained the trophy after a nervous final match that was decided by flicks.
Sadly, the men's team - captained by Mark Jones - didn't fare so well and were unable to qualify past the group stages despite winning their first two matches and drawing another. |

Friday 19-May-06New ruling on dangerous hits from FIH
Rules of Hockey: use of the "forehand edge" - for immediate implementation.
PLAYERS MUST NOT HIT THE BALL HARD ON THE FOREHAND WITH THE EDGE OF THE STICK.
The forehand is defined as playing a ball which is to the right of the player in a forwards direction. This does not prohibit use of the edge of the stick on the forehand in a controlled action in a tackle, when raising the ball in a controlled way over an opponent's stick or over a goalkeeper who is lying on the ground or when using a long pushing motion along the ground.
The use of the edge of the stick on the backhand has developed as a technical skill and is permitted subject to danger.
This rule change is incorporated in the 2006 Rules of Hockey published on the FIH website. It will be fully integrated in the 2007/8 rules when they are published later in the year. |

The leagues have all ground to a halt and a combination of April, hot sunny days and the Spencer Mixed Festival herald the start of the touring season.
This year was no exception with the Dragons competing in the Spencer Mixed Festival for the fourth year running. This year's team managed to get the furthest in the Dragons short history! Coming second in the group stages only to be knocked out in the quarter-finals against a team with two England internationals.

Monday 03-Apr-06Triple trophy heartbreak...
The news from the weekend is mixed... some great results to complete the fixtures from the womens leagues but, sadly, all three of the teams involved in cup action lost out.
The league results saw wins for the Womens 1s, 2s, 4s & 6s with a total of 14 goals scored. Only the Womens 5s slipped up with a 2-1 loss to Barnes Hounslow & Ealing.
However, a great weekend for Hampstead & Westminster saw them win all three of the semi-final matches against THD opposition. The Tornados came back from 2-0 to draw, only to let in a late heartbreaking goal. Elsewhere the Diamonds were outclassed and on the receiving end of a sound beating.
Sunday saw the Womens 1s take the lead in the HA Trophy only to be denied progression after letting two goals in during the match. Despite being the better of the two sides and extended periods of constant pressure the equaliser just did not come. |

Sunday 26-Mar-06And now the end is near...
Not a weekend of great news for THD with only two wins to talk about. The Womens 1s soundly thrashed Barnes Hounslow Ealing 7-0 and the Womens 2s just edged out Croyden MO's 3-2.
The remainder of the Womens section saw a lot of goals conceded. The 3s lost 7-0 to OKs, the 4s lost 5-0 to Richmond and the 6s lost a staggering 16-0 toUCL Academicals. Only T5 were spared the blushes by narrowly losing 3-2 to Shirley 1s.
The Men's section had only two games both to complete the 2005/06 league commitments. Both saw heavily losses for the teams concerned. The Royals were soundly beaten 7-0 by a useful Indian Gym side and the Mens 1s were taken apart by a bad tempered and arrogant Trojans. Although the 1s lost 7-2 the impact on the season in negligible as a win combined with other results last weekend saw the threat of relegation abated.
All eyes remain firmly on next weekend's fixtures, which see the Diamonds, Tornados and Womens 1s in semi-Finals for the respective cups and trophies. With one promotion already secured by THD, this season could turn out to be a real boost in business for red & green ribbon makers! |
Tuesday 21-Mar-06
On the 17th and 18th of June this year, a team of six from the Womens 6s will be taking part in the Caledonian Challenge 2006.
The Caledonian Challenge is one of Scotland's top endurance fund raising events, and our team of 6 will (attempt to!) cover 54 miles within 24 hours, walking from Fort William via Glen Coe and the "Devils Staircase", crossing Rannoch Moor and down to Loch Lomond. A total of 9,500 walkers have taken part over the years, clocking up 513,000 miles between them - equivalent to walking to the moon and back!
The team is Isla McGregor, Maurissa Allan, Pippa Haworth, Simone Poole, Iona Colqhhoun and Jen Gilmour. The walk is about raising money for charity. They will need any support and help you can send to keep them motivated for the big day, but as they have committed to raising £3,000 for charity, they really need your money! The event is organised by the Scottish Community Foundation which is where your donation will be going. The foundation manages over 200 charitable funds and over 700 grants have been given out so far, thanks to money raised by the Caledonian Challenge.
Details on the charity and the event are available on the website - www.caledonianchallenge.co.uk
If you are in a position to spare any pennies to sponsor them, then please, please, please visit the following link: www.caledonianchallenge.com/sponsorship/online.php
You will have to select their team name from the drop down list - which is Mcwhatthehellwerewethinking then there are a few simple steps to make a donation.
Thank you so much in advance - your support is greatly appreciated. |

Monday 20-Mar-06Forget the games... remember the dinner!
The season is stuttering to a close and minds are already drifting to thoughts of holidays. With the dinner on Saturday night people could be forgiven for playing with less intensity - after all scabby knees and a black dress don't really do you any favours!
Wins for T5 and the Mens 1s were the highlight of an action packed Saturday. Also an honorable draw for the Tornados vs a THD select XI comprising of 2s, 3s & Diamonds players. A perfect set up for the evening's events.
The only other piece of good news was a 1-1 draw for the Womens 2s. Although that game was more 2 points lost than one point gained. Losses for the Womens 1s, 3s & 4s along with the Royals took care of the remaining fixtures.
Sunday saw an end to the Dragons HA Trophy run as a depleted 10 man (person?) team had to take on a previous year's semi-finalist. Despite clawing back from 4-0 down to 4-5 with 20mins to play the end result was 4-8.
While most the men's teams have finished for this season there is still one game for both the 1s and the Royals. However, both the Diamonds & Tornados have league cup semi finals on 01-Apr.
For the women's section the teams all have a couple of games to go but none will impact on either promotion or relegation. The Womens 1s still have their cup run to keep them going with the semi-Finals on 02-Apr.
A good year for the club... one promotion secured and still the possibility of three lots of silverware!!! |

Sunday 12-Mar-06It's all about the silverware...
The road to glory is starting to get a little crowded at THD! The Womens 1s crowned off a double winning weekend by soundly beating Wisbech to move into the Semi-Finals of the HA Trophy. The Diamonds also finally clinched the promotion spot they have been chasing all season.
The Tornados, having been so close to promotion for much of the latter half of the season, will have to look elsewhere for glory as the final game saw them draw and miss out. All is not lost though, as they have qualified for the League Cup Semi-Final.
Elsewhere in the club there were good wins for both the Womens 4s and the 5s. The Dragons also completed their final league game with a thrashing of Sinners 6-1.
Other results in the Mens section were not so good with both the 2s and 3s getting a thrashing. The Mens 1s lost an important relegation battle game and thy now only have two games left to get out of trouble. The Royals don't play until next weekend.
Both the Womens 2s & 3s were also beaten without so much as a goal in reply. The scores were 0-5 and 0-1 respectively. |
