Sunday 03-Dec-06Bore score draws...
Five score draws in one weekend must be some kind of club record! Three goals each for both the Mens & Womens 2s, where as the Tornados, Diamonds & Mens 3s all drew 1-1.
Elsewhere the Mens 1s lost again by one goal - this time at home to Maidstone.
A good week for the Womens 3s who demolished Barnes Hounslow Ealing, but not so great for the other Women's club sides as the 4s, 5s & 6s all lost.
Neither the Womens 1s nor the Dragons are in action again until the New Year, whereas the unexpected popularity of Peter Pan on Ice means that the Royals game had to be postponed. |

Sunday 26-Nov-06Rain doesn't stop play!
Despite the torrential rain and generally shabby conditions all fixtures were completed this weekend. Highlights from Saturday's games include the Womens 1s maintaining their push for promotion with a 2-0 win over Surbiton and the Mens 3s 5-2 drubbing of Richmond.
Other results in the Men's section saw the 1s lose out narrowly to Barnes, while the 2s played out a drab 1-1 draw with Richmond. The Tornados saw a return to form and while leading for most of the match saw an equaliser in the last 10 mins resulting in honours shared. The Diamonds struggled to get into their game against Spencer and took a bit of a beating 1-5. The Royals have no games for a fortnight due to rest weeks and, bizarrely, the popularity of 'Peter Pan on Ice'! Don't Ask!
Results were better in the Women's section with both the 3s and 4s winning their respective matches against Thames Valley & Woking. The Womens 2s slipped up against Wimbledon and are now 4 points adrift of top placed Old Cranleighans. Both the Womens 5s & 6s lost by a narrow one-goal margin.
Sadly the Dragons slipped up in their match vs Real Battersea on Sunday and after leading 4-2 at half time, lost 6-9 by the close. |

Sunday 19-Nov-06Sinners superbly spanked!
Sunday saw the Dragons reach double figures with a breathtaking 11-2 drubbing of Sinners. Prospects are looking good for the Trophy matches which begin on 28-Jan at home to Wimbledon.
The Saturday results saw the Mens 1s gain a valuable point against Trojans. Draws were also on the cards for both the Mens 2s and the Tornados. The Diamonds lost out to the league leaders whereas both the Royals and the Mens 3s won their encounters.
The women's section fared well this weekend with four of the six sides winning. The 1s won in stlye against Purley - drubbing them 4-0. Great wins for the 2s, 6s & 4s, but there were 3-0 reverses for both the 3s and the 5s. |

Sunday 12-Nov-06A win here or there...
Not a great week for South London's friendliest Hockey club but in amongst the dross there are things to celebrate! Another win came the way of the Mens 1s as did another point for the Diamonds, the Womens 3s won away and the Womens 1s extended their unbeaten league run.
Other news from the Mens section saw the Mens 3s gain a creditable draw against the Oxford Uni students but both the Tornados and Royals lost a home to Old Loughts and Blackheath respectively.
Little news from the Women's section as both the 2s and 5s had their matches cancelled by the opposition - still counts as a win however you get it! In the other games that were played both the 4s and the 6s lost by a two goal margin.
Results from Sunday were very very positive with a win for both the Womens 1s away in the HA Trophy to Eastbourne and the Dragons in the Battersea Mixed League. |

Friday 10-Nov-06Discipline in Hockey...
The Southern Counties HA is concerned with the number of incidents of Umpire Abuse over the last few years. This not only creates a poor image for the sport but it also results in an increasing numbers of umpires retiring the game early. It has recommended that the counties apply a minimum 30 day ban for all those issued a red card or MMO for umpire abuse.

in Hockey' document or access it on the county

Sunday 05-Nov-06Bright November Start ...
After a couple of week of gloom, November has brought cold weather and better results. Points back on the board for both the Mens 2s and Womens 2s means they are back around the promotion zone. Along with a 1-0 win for the Womens 1s means that a few THD teams are well in the hunt for silverware.
Sadly the gloom continues for the Mens 1s who slipped up 2-1 at home to Henley. Other men's games saw the Tornados hit form again with a 3-0 drubbing of the Wombles and the Royals come back from a 3-0 deficit to salvage a point. The Diamonds finally got their first win of the season but, alas it was only a friendly.
Other results in the Womens section saw back to back wins recorded for the 6s and a point for the Womens 4s in a hard fought 1-1 draw. Both the 3s and 5s lost this weekend.
Neither the Dragons or the Mens 3s had a game this week. |

Sunday 29-Oct-06Diamond geezers...
Finally, a point for the Diamonds! Last season's most successful team - the only THD team to ever get promotion - has been struggling to hit form in their new league, but it seems that the tide has finally turned. A combative encounter at Maidenhead saw the final whistle blow at 2-2 and the Diamonds getting a very valuable point. Hopefully, they can step on from here.
Elsewhere the news is a little on the gloomy side with a lot of losses throughout the club... and sadly, all the remaining 100% records have now been smashed with both the Mens 2s and Womens 2s losing narrowly at home.
But the news isn't all bad! A convincing 6-0 win for the Womens 1s takes them within three points of top and the Royals made it back-to-back wins by demolishing the hapless Indian Gym at Dulwich College.
Plaudits also go to the Womens 6s who also recorded their first win of the season with an impressive display against Purley Walcountians. A 5-2 drubbing of Purley sees the 6s move out of the relegation zone.
The Dragons were involved in a bit of a goal-fest on Sunday with a 9-0 drubbing of the Optimists. |

Tuesday 24-Oct-06Academy Mid-Term Report
The Juniors go from strength to strength. We had anticipated that there would be an increase in numbers this year and had planned for this by setting out to recruit more adult coaches and crucially more young volunteers. We could only deal with extra numbers if we had the personnel to provide a top quality experience for the new young players. In the event, we have gathered together an experienced group of adult coaches. We have been joined by a Level 2 coach, Paul Sheppard; Snep, who worked with the tinys last year has stayed for the whole three hours; Michelle has brought her daughter and coached for two hours; Steve P. and Alex have been around for the whole morning, except when Alex is off at county trials; Ferret has been a regular helper; last but by no means least, Marilyn has overseen the registers and sorted out general administration admirably – the first batch of shirts should arrive just after half term, so I’m told. (Hope, I haven’t missed anyone out!)
The number of young volunteers has exceeded our wildest expectations. There have been 12 in all over the first six weeks of the season. One aim was to have all our coaches, both adults and children, qualified in some way. To achieve this we ran an England Hockey Young Leadership course in early October attended by 11 of our volunteers. This is a magnificent achievement and shows the commitment of the young people who have come to work within the club. So, our thanks must go to Hamza, Ed, Liam, Rosie L, Alex, Conor, Hannah, Rosie C, Lucy May, Lois, and Hamish. Your work has been invaluable.
Now to the players! We have had new players turn up every week so far. Word is spreading fast that we are providing a fun learning experience for young hockey players and we are beginning to attract players from other clubs in the area. The word is going out that THDJ is a well-run club and that the coaching is of a very good standard. At the last count, we have over 120 players registered with the Juniors. Roughly, we have 30 under 9s (10 of whom are under 7), 30 under 11s and 60 over 11/13s. We will only get bigger. We are very impressed with the calibre of the players we are attracting and the future of the club is in safe hands.
Finally, we are beginning to recruit parental help. Parents now run the coffee bar upstairs in the warmth of the Pavilion where we provide tea, coffee, biscuits, Sunday papers and even cake from time to time. Others are taking over the admin roles and we are advertising for team managers and social secretaries. The range of positive comments is too long to recite (sorry if that sounds like blowing our own trumpet, but it’s true). What parents find most important is that we are able to provide one to one coaching for children who have limited experience of playing the game and for players of greater potential.
So, there it is. We planned for growth and it has happened in spades.
We are very proud of what has been achieved and see this as just the
beginning. If you would like to be a part of all this then please
come along. If you are a member of the club with children and would
like them to start playing then here we are. I have taken some time
to explain what we are doing and what has been achieved because I’m
not sure that many in the club are aware of what is happening on a
Sunday morning. Well, now you know. If you would like to join us then
you would be most welcome. |

Sunday 22-Oct-06Mens 1s make a point...
At the fourth attempt the Mens 1s have finally managed to secure their first win of the season. They completed a 5-1 rout of basement boys Wimbledon to move themselves up to 10th in the table.
Elsewhere things were still looking gloomy for the other Mens teams with three more losses - the Tornados, Diamonds and 3s. On a positive note the Royals also secured their first win of the season away to St Albans.
No action in the Womens leagues this week but most teams return to action this coming weekend.
Sunday also saw a return to form for the Dragons who convincingly beat Daquiris 7-1 at a very rainy and miserable Battersea Park. |
