Match Reports 2004/05
Since 2003/04 the club has produced a weekly newsletter, during the season, containing match reports from each of the games played that weekend.
Fri 14-Jan-05Issue 10
What is it they say about Michaelmas terms? This one too seems to be going on and on for ever. A big thanks then to all those scribes who've been bringing you up to speed each week. Match reports are as usual below, and include some festive fun and news of a record scoreline in THD's favour as the Women's 6s put in 13 without return. Lucky for some. While most of us can rest on our laurels (and holly and mistletoe) and enjoy the happy season without the distraction of looking for gumshields, spare a thought for the few sides who still have a game to play this Saturday. Purley away, a day trip to Blackburn, or Christmas shopping in Oxford Street? It's times like these when you have to grin and bear it for the cause.
Off the pitch, there's more news of the next generation. Congratulations to Karen and Ross Milburn on the birth of their baby boy. Thomas - can we have your Mum back now, please?!

Men's 1s vs. Slough: won 4-1
A good professional performance by all members of the squad. Creative play by the forwards resulted in an early 2 goal lead which was used as a base for a comfortable 4-1 victory. Unfortunately the match was marred by 2 malicious attacks on the vice-captain and captain of THD. The second attack resulted in a Slough player being issued a red card for hitting the THD captain in the cheekbone with the butt of his stick. An outstanding game by Chris Roberts who was named name of the match for the fourth game in a row. (AE)

Next match: Saturday 15th January vs. Oxford
Men's 3s vs. St Albans 3s: won 5-0
St Albans contacted me on Friday morning to say they hadn't enough players to come to Fortress Dulwich to be beaten. It's a real shame as we had already been erecting our "Welcome to Hell" banners, lighting the firecrackers and firing up the watching angry Mums of ours in preparation. Although the points push us on into 3rd all the guys were very disappointed we didn't get a run out to make up for the shocking defeat last week, and if we'd been notified quicker, we could have sorted out a friendly. We're looking good for next year - just you watch. A solid performance followed at the Christmas Party, players were seen giving their all although ultimately self-destruction hampered any remote chance of success. (JT)

Men's 5s vs. Indian Gymkhana: lost 2-3
Anyone watching the first 20 minutes of this game will wonder how THD managed to come away pointless. Nick Harris and Mark Lay secured a two goal lead as an ageing 10-man opposition were run ragged by some quick counter-attacks, particularly from Gus Barnard on the right wing. The previous week's mauling seemed a distant memory but somehow Indian Gym got a foothold by bouncing a fluky shot over keeper Paul Reid. The opposition's umpire then harshly punished THD with short-corners for innocuous offences outside the circle and by giving Mark Oakley a yellow card for his back-of-the-stick party piece. THD dominated possession in a bid to pull back the 3-2 deficit, but as usual lost the plot whenever the ball came near the goal. No wonder captain Stuart Craig's state-of-the-art goal scoring chart still looks more like a building site than the Manhattan skyline it should resemble by now. Thanks to Si Riley for umpiring. (GE)

Women's 1s vs. Staines: lost 1-3
Staines. Not a great name, not a great place. On clear days the view from the clubhouse must be stunning in this area of outstanding natural beauty, but unfortunately a tremendous amount of fog meant that we couldn't take in the delicate contours of the chemical factory chimneys. The umpires decided that we would have to delay the start of the match which suited us a bit too well. Our centre midfield was still in bed when these important decisions were being made wearing the clothes she wore to a Christmas party the night before, and we all naturally wanted to watch Soccer AM on TV in the clubhouse. We got pretty comfy and dreamt of being back in bed with Thierry when suddenly some lunatic appeared at the door and said that there was a hockey match taking place on the astro, and would we like to go and play? Oh, all right then. By the time we got to the pitch we were already 1 nil down, and we'd just finished stretching when they scored a second. Pipes then had a brainwave and asked us to start running around. Genius. Worked a treat. We scored and were back in it, nearly adding a second once or twice - there was even a goal disallowed and we should have had a flick. To cut a long story short, the fog couldn't hide a really dismal performance. However, in every fog cloud there is a pair of sliver, sparkly shoes. New talents were found within the team later that evening at Burbage Road: Nicky can make giraffes out of balloons, Bettina can do crazy stuff with her hair and EJ can dance her way out of any murder attempt on the dance floor. With strength and depth like this in the squad we can go on to win the league - no, really, we can. (EJB)

Women's 2s vs. Wanderers 1As: lost 0-3?
Next match: Saturday 18 December vs. Purley Walcountians 2s - away
Women's 3s vs. Phoenix: lost 1-3
Shocker all round. The 3s ignored recent good form to produce an all round shocker last Saturday. From the first touch of the ball things just didn't seem to go right and we never developed our passing, running game. The opposition suffered injuries but played on and looked far more determined to win. THD let in 2 soft goals in the 1st half and looked tired from the start. THD had numerous penalty corners and eventually Emma popped one in from the left post. Phoenix scored one back however to take the game 3-1. Jo De Silva played well and showed determination in tackling her wing, coming out with the ball 90% of the time. Not a good game though for most to end the year on, but captain Joanna Reynolds remains ever optimistic: "We're looking forward to the next game in the new year as a chance to prove that this particular performance was an aberration from normal and that we are a determined, feisty side". Rock on. (LG)

Women's 4s vs. Spencer 3s: lost 1-4
"In the Bleak Mid Winter", "Away in a Mitcham", the 4s, kitted up in the fancy away shirts were "Dreaming of a White Christmas" win. "The First Goal-ell" from Spencer was a "Good Ping, Defence-were-lost (!)" - we didn't give up and ran our little socks off, but unfortunately "The 12 Play-ers of Spencer" managed 2 more and were 3 - 0 up at half time. Everything was looking good, our only word of advice was "More Calling Birds" as were a bit Silent on the Night. Remembering JT's words from last week - we managed to "Jingle the Ball" up the right , along the back line and won a short. Nicki "Decked the Ball" and bagged us one back. Ding Dong! we cried Merrily we were on a high. Unfortunately that's the way it ended. There was a lot of good hockey - 2005 will be our year - let's have em. (LM)

Women's 5s vs. Wanderers 5s: won 1-0
We're currently lying in 4th place in the league, a scant 2 points behind the joint 2nd and 3rd placed clubs - it's all to play for in our division. Thank the Lord we beat Wanderers, who are one of the clubs above us, by 1 goal (a brilliant whack from Ash at the edge of the D). When was the last time we lost a match? We're so good that we can't remember. (FB)

Women's 6s vs. London Uni: won 5-1
Well, this game was a fun friendly - London Uni have formally withdrawn from the league, but we figured we still need much practice and with the usual enthusiasm from the sixes (!)we managed to get a full team together and actually get a good win (shame the points don't count!!). The game was very active with some good passing, though we were a clustering a bit and I have seen us play better hockey - still, not complaining at all seeing as the goals still went in. Vicki Wright dominated with 4 goals and Hazel got an absolute cracker by dribbling passed at least 3 defenders in the 'D' and scoring - so that's what they mean by 'go on yerself luv'! Needless to say I don't think my umpiring was so effective and was very glad when a managed to rope two blokes standing on the sidelines to do it for me - that was my winner of the day !

Women's 6s vs. Purley Walcountians: won 13-0
Yes, I know you can't believe it but it's TRUE - 13 to nil. 'Fraid we can't take all the credit as our oppo was 3 players down, but still, we get the points and the goal difference (much needed) ! It was a superb day on Saturday and unfortunately for our opposition, everyone in the sixes was in really good form despite sun in the eyes and some horrific hangovers! The passing as usual was really good and we took full advantage of the space we had on the pitch, the forwards constantly pushing up and giving both Purley's defenders and their poor goalie a bit of a hard time. Our own defenders and Vicki in goal at the back had a less fun time and I think had agreed that they should've brought some good books or a pillow with them! We did, though, get Laura (centre back / sweeper) to have a run up top and the result was a an instantaneous goal - her first ever - well done! As usual - thanks to everyone for their enthusiasm and particularly to Vicki Adkin for turning out for us. Onwards and upwards we hope... ! (MM)
