Mens 1st vs. Barnes: lost 1-2

This match was not one for the scrapbook. We lacked conviction and seemed to think that the best way to play hockey was to run on to the opposition's front sticks. We held on to the ball far too long and created very few goal scoring opportunities. We struggled getting use to the slightly bobbly pitch and our basic skills were not at a level that would have justified us taking anything from the game. The goals went as follows: they scored a short corner, we scored a counter attack which involved some great inter-play between Casement and Cuzza before Casement scored and then we gave the ball away at the halfway line with which they came right back at us to score. In the middle of it all Gregg made a last ditch sliding tackled which prevented them scoring ............. but they were awarded a flick. Rab made a wonderful stick save from the penalty - diving high to his right and tipping it over the bar. However, it could also have been straight at him, gone through his legs at 1mph and come to rest against a twig on the goal line. (Andy B)

Men's 2s vs. Oxford University (A): lost 2-3

A 10:30 start away in Oxford is never the most inviting of prospects, especially when you turn up and the students don't seem to be nursing any killer hangovers. It certainly wasn't like that in Wiggy's days here, however they wouldn't know that as they would have been between 2 and 5 years old when Wiggy was an undergraduate skulking around Oxford in his tweed blazer (and full head of hair?). With Clive making the world's shortest comeback from retirement we weren't short of experience and guile, however we were not switched on and took 15 minutes to adapt to the bouncy pitch and energetic opposition. By this time we were 3 goals down and although we bossed the rest of the match (especially the second half) we could only convert 2 of our numerous opportunities. Special mention goes to Sam, our very own 'wardrobe' (Fulham fans will know what I'm talking about) who was at his intimidatory best, reducing their entire right flank to a bunch of gibbering wrecks. And so to the evening.... 10 stayed for a Saturday night sampling Oxford's delights and, unlike with our hockey, normal service was resumed. Clively and Wiggy found the pace too much and left early only to fall asleep waiting for 'match of the day' to start, Potty had to be taken home early due to his inability to stand up or speak in any discernibly human language, Matt fell asleep in his pint, Ferg wowed the more mature ladies with his dance floor moves and chat, Smudge locked Sam out of their room after a lover's tiff and 7 gargantuan kebabs were ordered and consumed on the stumble home. Oh, and no night would be complete without the ubiquitous Banwell 2 bottles of champers (bought and consumed in a dodgy club/bar called Que Pasa ?, nice). With our team spirit renewed, normal service resumption on pitch required next week please gents......Finally, many thanks to alumni Clively and Dan for dusting off their sticks to come and help us out. (Aido)

Tornados vs. London Wayfarers 5s: lost 2-7

Welcome to "mis-Match of the Day", hosted by Brian Cant from "Let's Pretend". Ok children, let's pretend the team we are playing is a fifth XI side and currently sixth in the division. Then let's be really surprised when we have four drag flick short corners scored against us and they play with the sublime passing game of a second XI side. Don't pity us, pity the regulars for the Wayfarers team that were asked to step aside and make way. For those of you who read the bible... David does not always beat Goliath - at least not in Kingston - although, if the bible is to be believed then perhaps there is some comfort to be taken in their eternal suffering in hell... if only deceit was one of the deadly sins. Quite frankly, if that is the way the league is going then I may just stay at home and covet my neighbours wife instead... (MJ)

Men's 5s vs. Hampstead & Westminster: drew 2-2

In a game delayed for 90 minutes by "pitch congestion", the 5s ended their dodgy spell with a hard-fought draw against fellow mid-tablers Hampstead & Westminster. The visitors took the late start in their stride and contributed to an entertaining clash that saw THD go 2-0 up before succumbing to a couple of late goals. In truth it was a fair result, although there was not much sporting about our first goal after one of the visiting defenders pulled off a blinding one-handed save from underneath the crossbar. Amazingly, he managed to stay on the pitch while Stuart Craig, who had been denied from his initial shot, tucked away the resulting penalty flick. Your correspondent then left the field with a case of double vision, but I'm assured Captain Craig was once more on target with a stunning short-corner strike. How we came to let in two goals remains a mystery. (GE)

Team: Paul Reid, Vish Phakey, Stuart Craig, Billy Dowie, Mike Killen, Graeme Evans, Simon Canter, Gus Barnard, Mark Annear, Simon Jones, Dominic Peyton, Oliver Morgan, Mark.

Men's 6s vs. HAC Sutlers: won 2-1

This was a very hard fought victory but in the end very well earned, although the opposition clearly didn't think so. This was demonstrated by their rapid leaving of the ground after the game while we were showering. Anyway enough of that. The game itself kind of followed a similar pattern to last weeks, we started very well kept the ball, played some really good hockey and generally dominated going ahead mid way through the half as we did last week. Then instead of waiting until after half time to have a bad ten minutes like last week we decided to do it at the end of the first half. Thankfully this week our opposition couldn't muster a shot on target and so we made it to the break ahead. The second half started with the shock of conceding a goal in the first minute, making me think that the panic of the end of the first half would continue. However we scored what turned out to be the winner within minutes of the restart and could have had a couple more as the half progressed. HAC pressed as the game progressed but didn't trouble our keeper so we hung on for the points. (CR)

Next match: Saturday 22 January vs. Hampstead and Westminster Spaniards - 12 noon away

Dragons vs. UCL: lost 3-5

Hard work and determination always pay-off. Sadly, it was the opposition who had that. We were hungover and average. But we have been to the top of the mountain and no-one can ever take that away from us, do you hear me? NO-ONE! (MJ)

Women's 1s vs. Southgate (HA Trophy 3rd Round): won 4-2

Nothing like a Cup game to blow away the Christmas cobwebs, especially when the next league game is not until dim and distant February. Southgate had some young whippersnappers and certainly seemed to be more awake than us from the start. They nipped down the pitch from the push back and won a penalty corner, which they converted rather stylishly and so we found ourselves 1 nil down after 30 seconds - marvellous stuff. However, we hit back immediately from the restart and some lovely skills from Gemma set up Martha for the equaliser. So 1-1 and a minute on the clock, could this possibly continue? We then dominated the rest of the half and converted a penalty corner after Charley and Rachel had combined nicely, and Martha was flying down the left wing causing all kinds of problems for the Southgate defence. The second half was better in parts although collectively we took the decision to spice things up a bit by letting Southgate equalise halfway though. No matter; we were playing better as a team and due to good solid defensive play we started to dominate possession again. We had a few near misses before Rachael scored from a sweetly hit free hit and finally we finished the game off with a goalmouth melee - both B and EJ tried to shovel the ball over the line but eventually B emerged with the glory. Thanks to Gordon and Aidan for umpiring and to everyone who came to support - great to see Nicky alive and well after that awful incident at Purley. (EJB)

Women's 2s vs. London Wayfarers: drew 2-2

We really wanted this one, and from the whistle we went out blazing. The team produced some creative play and plenty of passing to their own players! It made a difference, so much so, that the opposition were heard to say 'it's a different team from the last encounter' however, they were mistaken, it was much the same team, we were just playing better. Constant hard work up front from Zoey, Ferrett and Emma, well supplied by the mid-field saw them having to save off our goal line on more than one occasion, nail biting to watch from the back. Eventually a leg saved the ball off the line and Alex stepped up take that penalty flick, 1-0. Second half, I think we had consumed more energy that we realised in the first half. They started to control the game. Lots of short corners against us and some sloppy passing saw them take the advantage. On this particular short the ball was cushioned by Rumple-Stilt-Skin's calf, who was no longer able to continue, but the umpire played on and instead of watching the ball, people were watching the injured person hop, they scored. Another short corner minutes later was well executed and went in; 2-1. Blood was simmering/boiling, we took the game to them and kindly the opposition popped the ball into the back of the net; 2-2. We thoroughly deserved a win, but at least we did not lose. Well done everyone a wonderful team effort. The weekly vote was tight; Liz came a close second, but our very own Zoey clinched Lady of the Match, well deserved! (KB)

Women's 6s vs. Addiscombe 3s: won: 11-0

Having listened intently to stand-in captain Hazel's advice on playing on grass, we steeled ourselves for 70 minutes of zero ball pace & much falling over. We needn't have worried, as Addiscombe were even less at ease on the surface, and we were very quickly 2 goals up. Addiscombe only broke into our D once, taking our defense by surprise, but by half time we were 8-0 up, with 5 goals from Vicky, 2 from Maurissa and 1 from Gigi. Addiscombe really raised their game in the second half, making us work harder in defense, and keeping our attackers at bay for 20 minutes. Then we got our groove back, the goals started flowing again, with 2 more from Vicky, 1 more from Maurissa and 1 from Pippa. Mathematicians amongst you will notice that this adds up to 12 goals, so the final result is debatable, but still a resounding victory. (JH)

Team: Hazel Dawson, Jo Hillyer, Sam Ratnayake, Isla McGregor, Kate Straker, Laura Matthews, Sue Sarkar, Claire Shirley, Mae McDougall, Maurissa Allan, Gigi Ho, Pippa Haworth, Vicky Wright.
