Since 2003/04 the club has produced a weekly newsletter, during the season, containing match reports from each of the games played that weekend.

Fri 28-Jan-05

Issue 13

January's nearly over. The Men's 3s are back from their extended Xmas break. The Dragon's are due a win. We might even squeeze in an end of season dinner before the election. 12 March. You heard it here first. Keep chipper.

reports by: Aidan Brock, James Terrett, Mark Jones, Graeme Evans, Chris Richman, Kate Selway, Joanna Reynolds, Marie Smith and Emma Gilchrist.

Men's 1s vs. PHC Chiswick: drew 2-2

Next match: Saturday 29th January vs. Brighton & Hove - tba @ DC

Men's 2s vs. Wayfarers: won 1-0

Losing two players to the 1's on Thursday and having to spend 20 minutes trying to find a 'secure' car parking spot in Kennington are not the best preparations for a match against the team who are second in the league. Nevertheless, buoyed by tales of Saturday night antics in Oxford, we set about the task with considerably more gusto than in previous weeks. This was somewhat stymied when, after ten minutes, Bungle was hit on the wrist and had to retire, but a little re-organisation and we were back on track, going into the break on level terms. Wayfarers are a well organised team and are not second in the league by chance, however with disciplined marking from the back three and Ferg, Timbo, Sam and Pete all working their socks off in midfield their only chances came from short corners, leaving them goalless for only the second time this season. Special mention goes to the wardrobe and Simon who kept their dangerous right flank at bay with some great covering back and tenacious tackling, the former using his 25ft reach advantage to great effect, and to Potty and Lee who ran their socks off and created some lovely angles. We had numerous scoring chances and finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute with a 'classic' Potty deflection from a Pully exocet into the danger area. Great result, great team performance, onwards & upwards....

Team: Wiggy, Aido, Pully, Ed Stevenson, Simon Glasson, Bungle, Ferg, Timbo, Wardrobe (Sam), Potty, Snowy, Pete Howland.

Manager: Banners.

Scorer: Potty Next match: Saturday 5th February vs. Maidenhead (A)

Men's 3s vs. Wayfarers 3s: won 3-2

Another late dramatic win, another three points. Looking at the possession, chances and the number of short corners for us (conservative estimates are 125), we should have won this match by 7 or 8 goals. However, with 10 minutes to go we were 2-1 down and I was trying to come to terms with the most ridiculous of situations we had found ourselves in. Throughout the match we were excellent, although we couldn't seem to get the ball in the back of the net. Everyone went close, although when we closed in on goal we either panicked, or put every one of the numerous short corners off target. Luckily amongst the impotent finishing, Geoff scored brilliantly in the first half, although amazingly we still conceded from their only foray into our half. Second half was much the same, although we had a flick saved before Foggy slotted home a rebound ready for the final onslaught at 2-2. Finally the hero of the match Nick Harris stepped up to drag-flick home our 324th short corner right on the final whistle. Justice. We are 5 points off top spot with two games in hand. Win them we go top. Its that simple.

Team: Jeremy Porter, Thom Ruane, Nick Harris, James Terrett, Wesley Cole, Mike Killen, Neil Happs, Nick Jacob, Will Atkinson, Julian Taylor, David Fogden, Geoff Pritchard.

Scorers: Geoff Pritchard, David Fogden, Nick Harris.

Umpires: Billy Dowie, Simon Riley

Next match: Saturday 29th January vs. Old Loughtonians 3s - 14:30 away

Tornados vs. Wayfarers 4s: lost 0-3

Nobody enjoys January, but hey do we ever take it to extremes. The Tornados are not getting the run of the luck maybe the fact that on the way to the game Lee walked under a ladder, MJ ran over a black cat, Tom spotted a single Magpie, Nick trod on some cracks in the pavement, Will split some salt and didn't throw any over his shoulder, Warren found a five leafed clover, Neil Smith accidentally opened his umbrella indoors, Neil Gallagher told a lie without crossing his fingers, Rich Fenton broke his suave mirror, Loz shouted 'Macbeth' in a local theatre & Si Riley still has his Xmas decorations up... has something to do with it! It is said you can make your own luck... I hope so or we'll get relegated. Maybe amazon.co.uk has "How to make your own luck - a Simple Guide" in its January sales... I'll just go check, although knowing our luck it'll be sold out!

Team: Lee Tearle (GK), MJ, Tom Alexander, Nick Jones, Will Morgan, Warren Holme, Neil Smith, Neil Gallagher, Rich Fenton, Si Riley & Loz Mockery.

Man of the Match: Nick Jones.

Umpire: Simon Newell

Men's 5s vs. London Wayfarers: lost 0-4

Injured he may have been, but credit to Richard Batty for trekking from north of the river to support the boys. So how did we repay him? With quite easily the worst performance of the season. Wayfarers were beaten in a one-sided 1-0 encounter earlier in the season, but were far more organised this time and perhaps deserved more than the four goals they did manage. Enough said. Thanks to Simon Riley for umpiring.

Team: Paul Reid, Vish Phakey, Stuart Craig, Billy Dowie, Graeme Evans, Mark Oakley, Simon Canter, Gus Barnard, Mark Annear, Simon Jones, Dominic Peyton, Oliver Morgan, Mark Nash, Mark Lay.

Man of Match: Billy

Umpire: Simon Riley

Next match: Saturday 29 January vs. Southgate Goblets, away 1.30pm.

Men's 6s vs. Hampstead and Westminster Spaniards: lost 0-3

The result of this game went as expected really. They are top of the league, have scored 60 odd and conceded only 11 and are by far the best team we have played this year and a nice bunch as well. However the manner of defeat wasn't. We battled, created several excellent chances and put up one of our best performances of the season. The first half was dominated by Hampstead but we were unlucky to go in two goals down. I think a 1 - 0 scoreline would have been a better reflection of the game especially as their first goal involved their scorer dribbling into the d with everything apart from his stick. In the second half we really took the game to Hampstead and had we not spurned three glorious chances then the final score would have been very different. The third goal came from a short corner with 20 seconds left which spoiled an excellent second half performance. We will however try to exact some revenge on Hampstead when we take them on in a cricket match in the summer after they challenged us in the bar afterwards. Should be easy - the Spanish don't play cricket although the amount of South Africans in their team lead me to believe that we might not get a result there either, however ringers are welcome. Special mention must go to Will Pendrill who, after throwing away money in a card game to Si Riley, then managed to miss the club house meet and turned up 5 minutes before half time smelling worse than the inside of a wine vat.

Team: Tao McCloud, Richard Mead, Will Pendrill, James Kingdom, Ferg "Fight Club" Johnson, Doug "Headband" Heard, Ian Roberts, Ed Allen, Ben Lones, Tim Smith, Adam Greaves, Mehraab Nazir, Andy Bond

Next match: Saturday 29th January vs. Old Loughtonians Loppers - 13:30 @ CPB

Women's 2s vs. Barnes 2s: won 3-1

The Fat One thought the girls needed a few extra challenges this week to spur them on to victory, and swiftly achieved it by sending her few remaining brain cells on a week's vacation. Ok, so NOW I remember that Liz did tell me she was going to be away this weekend. Er whoops! That took us down to 11 which wouldn't have been a problem had the team not ignored Lucy Muldoon's polite email request on Friday for a lift. Lucy has warned us about her navigation skills before so we should have seen it coming. To cut a long and winding road short, Lucy ended up in a lot of places on Saturday morning none of which sounded like Hampton, but which certainly included Brentford, and arrived 25 minutes into the first half, looking only slightly less stressed than a bowl of egg whites whisked to a frothy peak. And then there was Alex Hardy who needed to leave 15 minutes early to get to Selhurst Park to help another team to another 3 goal victory. Do your maths - that's 40 of the 70 with 10 players! So, how did we do it? Well, Blumes put herself about in 2 simultaneous positions on the left (though frankly I think she was still on a high from her bathroom experience with Christian Slater in her work's loo last Wednesday - call that an excuse for missing training??!!), Charley and Claudie produced some very able and composed play in the midfield, Zoey foxed them up front, and Pipes was solid as a rock in goal. We were also ably assisted by the oppo's keeper who hadn't seen the inside of the onion bag before, and made the mistake of asking Pipes before the game which leg pad was which. All of which goes to show that we live in a universe which is invariably random but often benign (unless you factor in the sweaty old blokes in the pub afterwards who expressed themselves to be crestfallen when Lucy changed from her skirt to her trackies). (KS)

The talent this week was: Jo Malkin, Alex Crawford, Alex Hardy, Kate Blumer, Lucy Muldoon, Claudie Sellers, Jules Ingham, Charley Williams, Zoey Handforth, Julie Ferrett, Emma Kitley. Scorers: Alex C, Claudie, Ferrett

Player of the match: Claudie Next game: Saturday 29 January vs. Oxted - 12.00 @ Oxted County School

Women's 3s vs. Spencer 2s: drew 0-0

Sounds horribly boring. 3.30 on a raw Saturday afternoon in Battersea Park. 0-0. Yawn yawn. But so far from the truth (unlike the first half of the Southampton/Liverpool game which was horrible indeed if a Liverpool fan). It was end to end stuff, with both teams threatening to score at any point, huge amounts of work, slick passing and crowd pleasing skills. All the team was great. The commitment was excellent, the spirit fine, the reaction to dodgy umpiring good (other than my goodself!) and although we didn't win I think we all came off thinking we'd done ourselves proud. we can build on this going into next week. Difficult to name a player of the match. Rosie played many positions and all excellently, Lou and Cath were solid in defence, Roz bamboozled her marker and Harriet played with all her usual poise and grace but think George stole the day. She was excellent throughout. Only one outstanding question - what will Roz do when we win? One handed somersaults beyond most of us but 3 in a row...

Next game: Saturday 29th January vs. London University - 10.30 @ CPB

Women's 4s vs. Barnes: lost 2-4

15 minutes in we were losing 2-0. By half time we had pulled back to 2-2 thanks to Emma & Adele's excellent efforts. With about 15 mins left we were all over them & had hit the post, had a couple of shots saved & had all the attack. So how did we manage to lose 4-2 in the last quarter of the game when everyone played so well? I have no idea, but we did. Ho hum. (MS)

Team: Vix (GK); Anna Stuttard; Linds McLaren (MOTM); Helen Blake; Rosie Le Voir; Linds Bilsland; Isabelle Drew; Adele; Rona Francis; Emma Billsdon; Andrea Vicari; Marie Smith; Tash Riordan-Eva.

Scorers: Emma, Adele.

Women's 5s vs. Merton 2s: drew 1-1

Next match: Saturday 29th January vs. Addiscombe 2s

Women's 6s vs. Camberley & Farnborough: lost 1-3

With Michelle volunteering to be goalie for the match and no subs for the game, THD braced themselves for a tough game and it was that. It's the usual story with much of the possession being controlled by THD and C&F only having a few forays into our D, but they were rather good at scoring when they actually got there ! C&F defending was excellent, which made it even more difficult to break through to their D. One or two opportunities came our way in the short corners, resulting in our goal, however C&F were equally able to convert two of their shorts to goals (above Michelle's head). Solid defending on our side too though with Kate, Jo and Laura successfully supporting Michelle.

Team: Hazel Dawson, Jo Hillyer, Emma Gilchrist (c), Isla McGregor, Kate Straker, Laura Matthews, Sue Sarkar, Maurissa Allan, Gigi Ho, Vicky Wright, Michelle Morgan (c).

Scorers: Emma Gilchrist.

Next match: Saturday 29th January vs. Reigate - away

Dragons vs. Daiquiris: lost 2-4

Like a hospital patient with a missing ventricle & aorta it was a bit half-hearted. With the sort of defending seen at Custer's last stand and the incisive attacks of a timber wolf set in concrete there was, unlike the Ukrainian elections, only going to be one winner... them. The dragons keep coming up against the equivalent of St George and getting slain. Time to put the past behind us and stride out into the brave new world that we will create - a world where children don't go hungry, nobody is homeless and Sunday hockey is a one-way ticket to opening the largest can of whoop-ass on any who take up sticks against us. Quite frankly losing is like everyone getting a really nasty jumper from their Gran... whatever way you look at it, it just doesn't suit us.

Team: Aidan Brock, MJ, Will Morgan, JC, Nick Jacobs, Gareth Norris, Nick Jones, Holly Sardeson, Lou Curry, Linds McLaren, Michelle Morgan, Vicky Wright, Verity King & Emma Bilsden.

Scorers: Gareth Norris, JC.

Umpires: Nick Jones & Mark Annear
