Match Reports 2004/05

Since 2003/04 the club has produced a weekly newsletter, during the season, containing match reports from each of the games played that weekend.

Fri 26-Nov-04

Issue 07

At last some movement in the THD tables this week, as the women beat the sleet to notch up four victories and a draw on Saturday. I'm keeping it short to avoid any hint of favour (and so I can go to bed), but check out the Team Stats page on the website for more details.

First, though, here's a Christmas message from JT:

Thanks to all those that competed in the quiz last Saturday. The winning team "Dos Didos Mis Amigos" compromising Chris Richman, Mandy, Aidan Brock, Will Pendrill and Lee Snowden walked away with the title after a thorough examination of their wits. Common consensus was that the music round separated the wheat from the chaff and the quiz master suffered only minor barracking from Alex Hardy and Jules Ingham (Signed copies of the questions are available on request). As the festive season approaches don't forget the Christmas Party on the 11th of December. Disco, Buffet, Late Bar, Christmas Cheer and a few sprigs of mistletoe all for the measly sum of £10. This is the penultimate hockey social of the season - Can you afford to miss it? Tickets available from captains.

Mens 1s vs. Fareham: lost 2-3

Only one way to describe this foray to the south coast - minging. On a horrible day in Fareham, THD started the match like a rat up a drainpipe. The only difference being that the rat managed to score with an attractive mouse living below the rafters. After the THD forwards had spurned numerous gilt-edge opportunities in the first 15 minutes, Fareham's answer to Marilyn Manson put the home side ahead with a neat finish. This was shortly followed by some more "shoot yourself in the foot" style defending and Fareham suddenly lead 3-0. Wallop! Rather stunned, the visitors hit straight back with some clever play from Burrows and Ireson and they sensed a comeback was in the offing. Unfortunately it wasn't to be and as the hands became increasingly blue, so too did the mood in the camp. Momentarily lifted by a drag-flick from rookie Felix Nurse, TH&D couldn't find the equaliser they deserved. Lacking direction they headed to the scout hut and back up the M3 to London. Definitely the right direction this time. (WB)

Team: Gareth Weir (captain), Justin Collins, Oliver Morgan, Clive Colloff, Greg McAllister, Will Brownsden, Joel Burrows, Peter Ellis, Will Brown, James Ireson, David Weir, Felix Nurse, Tom Curry.

Men's 2s vs. PHC Chiswick: won 3-2

Not pretty, but a win is a win. Having 6 unavailable for selection and starting with 10 men (entirely my fault, apologies lads) was not good preparation. Nevertheless we proceeded to tear the oppo apart with incisive and quick fire passing. A somewhat bewildered Mike Tyrell was ushered onto the pitch to give us a full complement (the price you pay for being the first to turn up for the 4's match which followed ours) and we were 2-0 up at half- time. We then took our foot off the pedal and with our midfield misfiring, right and left back both injured and the remaining two defenders, Smudge and yours truly, not the quickest (or fittest) things on two legs Chiswick capitalised, scoring from 2 short corners. We had numerous goal scoring opportunities which weren't converted including hat trick avoidance from Fez, scooping our second penalty flick harmlessly wide. In the end were it not for MOTM Rab, who pulled off some dazzling saves to keep us ahead, we could have gifted Chiswick their first points of the season. Huge thanks to Mike for helping us out, back to business as usual this week please. (AB)

Team: Rab, Aido, Pully, Ferg, Snowy, Smudge, Bungle, Crusty (Will Atkinson), Fez, Potty(/groundskeeper Willie), Mike Tyrell.

Scorers: Fez (2, 1xpf), Potty.

Next match: Saturday 27th November vs. Richmond - 12:30 @ DC

Men's 3s vs. Southgate 3s: drew 3-3

Another close encounter and it leaves us unbeaten in seven matches. Early on it became clear that Southgate had two very quick and very skilful forwards that caused us lots of problems and enjoyed the better of the first half scoring two goals, the second a penalty stroke which Jeremy almost saved. After a bit of a chat at half-time we suddenly started to put Southgate under pressure and in a 15 minute spell, scored three goals and probably should have scored six. Excellent work on the right from Paul Harvey led to Julian Taylor to stroke home, and Mike Killen repeated the routine minutes later. Mike scored another from a short corner but we just couldn't score any more. Southgate came back into the game and scored from a well worked short corner, before really pushing us in the last 10 minutes for a winner. A draw seemed fair although it leaves us three points from the top and still in with a shout for promotion. The season is hotting up - unlike the weather. (JT)

Tornados vs. PHC Chiswick: lost 0-2

What a nightmare. 50 minutes of, what can only be termed, Zombie hockey. Wandering, meandering play with half-hearted tackling in the middle of nowhere after a 2hrs plus journey to get to a really awful astro. It was a lacklustre performance. Everybody tried but just not hard enough. Chiswick deserved the points and we duly handed them over. However, everyone should be applauded for the way we played in the last 20mins. We woke up, realised we were 2-0 down and were all over them - winning at least seven short corners and constantly working their keeper but it was to no avail. Wet, cold and miserable. Must try harder, can do better. (MJ)

Team: Lee Tearle(GK), Mark Jones, Nick Thomson, Tom Alexander, Neil Smith, Dougal Davis, Wes Cole, Rich Fenton, Mike Tyrrell, Nick Jones & Simon Riley.

Men's 5s vs. PHC Chiswick. lost 1-3

It had all looked so promising. Four wins in a row and the warm-up completed before half of the opposition - a lowly second from bottom Chiswick - had turned up. But things went quickly downhill as the movement and sharp passing of previous weeks dried up and TH&D struggled to maintain any kind of hold on the game. The opposition took their chances well and moved three goals up before captain Stuart Craig broke his scoring duck with a well-taken short corner ten minutes from the end. Thanks to JT and Si Wilshire for braving the weather to umpire. (GE)

Team: Paul Reid, Billy Dowie, Stuart Craig, Vish Phakey, Graeme Evans, Richard Batty, Mark Annear, Oliver Walton, Mark Lay, Simon Jones, Gus Barnard, Dominic Peyton, Paul Burrows.

Scorer: Stuart Craig

Men's 6s vs. Wimbledon Badgers: lost 0-4

Women's 1s vs. Windsor: won 9-0

It was a strange journey to Windsor. A 2.30pm start meant we had to cope with awful London traffic, which was made worse by a bad accident on the A4. An early meet time is a wonderful thing, as was the sight of EJ there ahead of everyone else... unlikely to happen again this season?! Special mention to Nikki, who got the train there after Kath (the Exmouth one, not Dulwich) strangely ignored her text message requesting a lift. It was sleeting when we left the changing rooms, but a good warm up and we were ready to go from the start. The first attack saw the first goal by Martha, the second attack her second and the third our third goal by Lou. Unfortunately, scoring a goal every 2 minutes was not a pattern we could continue, but some good attacking play saw another three first half goals and Lou, Rachel and Martha were poised to complete their hat tricks in the second half. Feel sorry for Windsor, who have become the whipping boys in the league, as it must be difficult turning out week after week knowing that you are unlikely to win. Despite this, they have generally managed to score against other opposition by being dangerous on the break, but with Pipes marshalling the defence, we managed to keep a clean sheet. With nothing to lose, Windsor played better in the second half (or were we worse?) and it was a while before we added to our tally. It was never in doubt that Martha would be voted player of the match as she had a blinder, completing her hat trick and setting up another as Charley and Gemma also scored to make it nine. (KS)

Team: Pipes, Emma Ward, Clare Byrne, Hilary Collins, Kath Sowter, Nicky Prior, Gemma Baker, Rachel Lander, Charley Williams, EJ Barry, Lou Morgan, Martha Harvey-Jones.

Scorers: Martha (3), Lou (2), Rachel (2), Charley, Gemma.

Player of the Match: Martha

Next Match: Saturday 27th November vs. Hampstead & Westminster - 11.15 @ Alleyn's

Women's 2s vs. Thames Valley: won 1-0

Women's 3s vs. Epsom 3s: drew 2-2

Freezing cold and 11.15 but everybody there on time and even asking the umps if we could start early! Epsom started the brighter - having been gifted a goal by Joanna who knew what she meant to do and that wasn't passing the ball to their centre forward! - but then the team settled down and started to get into the match. Strangely we always spend the first 10 minutes of every game playing all over the place and then suddenly remember we have positions and width and all that good stuff. Some good accurate passing resulted in a ball from Sonya to the back post and Lou - despite the hangover - put it away. 1-1 and half time. The second half brought good play from both teams although we had trouble finding the right leaving Rozzie feeling the cold! End to end stuff but we got the first break through. Sonya again passing an excellent ball to Lizzie who scored a cracker. We then dug deep - but still managed to let in a goal from a well taken short corner. In the meantime Sophie had to limp off having done some super brave stuff in their circle (hope you are ok Sophie) and Jo de Silva was nursing a badly bruised hand. Not sure why are games are so physical cos the oppo were lovely. Player of the match? Difficult one this week. Liz had an excellent debut in the 3s. Sonya put in some great crosses. Lizzie and Lou scored. But it goes to Erica for playing pretty much every outfield position and never complaining! Thank you.

Team: Vicky Adkin, Joanna Reynolds, Karen Dodds, Nicki Smithies, Lou Curry, Sonya Kwok, Jo de Silva, Liz Young, Roz Hornsby, Sophie Carter, Lizzie Gillett, Erica Goldsmith.

Scorers: Lou Curry, Lizzie Gillett.

Women's 4s vs. Woking: lost 0-1

Colin Charvis said THD 4s felt a mixture of pride and frustration after their one-point loss to Woking. "We can hold our heads up and feel we put in a performance worthy of the THD jersey, but the girls are very disappointed," Charvis told BBC Sport. "We've lost 8 games against our oppositions by narrow margins and it's very difficult for us to accept. We feel we are progressing but it's imperative we bounce back and get straight into it again." Charvis and his fellow THD forwards & GK (Emma, Claire & Krystina) were inspirational, and can proudly claim to have got the better of their Woking counterparts. "The girls are very, very down," he said. "We are all professionals. We want to win every game. We are not patting ourselves on the back because we got close. We are disappointed." (with inspiration, AS)

Team: Krystina, Anna Stuttard, Lindsey McLaren, Rosie Le Voir, Helen Clark, Emily Tearle, Andrea Vicari, Claire Whitehead, Tash Riordan-Eva, Emma Bilsden, Lynsey Bilsland.

Women's 5s vs. Mitcham: won 2-1

Neither the snow nor the effects of Team 5s Friday night adventure were to prevent our awesome squad of 13 from performing an intimidating warm-up. The opposition quaked with fear. Alert and bristling with aggression, Team 5 stormed the pitch and dominated play. Recognising inevitable defeat, Cranleigh morale was crushed in minutes. By half time Team 5 were naturally ahead, but where were 10 goals so flamboyantly described the previous evening? Worse was to come. In an entirely unpredictable twist of fate, our heroes conceded a goal. Yet, despite what appeared a potentially devastating setback victory was never in doubt. In the interests of drama, the forwards were simply tantalising our opposition. Seconds before full-time in a final arrogant exposition of Team 5s inimitable talent, Sarah smashed in her second outstanding goal. The crowd went wild. (KD)

Team: Alice Smith, Bridget Morley, Katherine Dixon, Nicole Yost, Rachael Fallows, Sarah Smith, Ashley McDonald, Kathryn Oliver, Andrea Beattie, Penny Ganser, Kate Fuller, Faith Gerharty.

Women's 6s vs. Croydon MOs 3s: Won 2-0

It was wet, cold and horrible when we arrived in Croydon for our game - and most of us were carrying the obligatory hangovers or at least up until 5.30 the night before (good going Terry)! But, the cold was soon forgotten as we got into some frantic game playing. It was little chaotic on the subbing side of things but we managed to keep it together for some really good passing and linkages up the pitch, along with a really outstanding defence. Some nifty passes in the D led to our first goal, again tucked past the goalie by Vicky W in a remarkably similar fashion to our last game (!) Whilst we had done a lot of running around, our team effort improved in the second half as did the passing up the pitch. A great run by Hazel up the pitch and past a couple of defenders led to a lovely pass to me to dribble to the top of the D and a big hit for our second goal of the match. The team work was really pleasing to see, especially when we even had defenders making runs up the pitch to score without conceding any goals! Thanks as usual to everyone. It was a good game against a reasonable opponent and congrats to Hazel for getting 'wo'man of the match for running about the pitch like a blue a*sed fly and creating some fab passes for our eventual goals. Also much thanks to Emma G for the traumatic umpiring and raising support at the sidelines, and to Krystyna for playing her second very wet game of the day! (MM)

Team: Krystyna, Jo Hillyer, Laura Matthews, Michelle Morgan, Jackie Monk, Claire Shirley, Gemma Robinson, Hazel Dawson, Isla MacGregor, Vicki Wright, Michelle Terry, Mae MacDougall, Gigi Ho, Fi Mullender.
