Newsletter 2005/06
Since 2003/04 the club has produced weekly match reports. From the start of the 2005/06 season this became a weekly newsletter, distributed during the season, containing match reports from each of the games played that weekend as well as other key information and a selection of adverts and offers.
Thurs 22-Sep-05Pre-Season Issue
A sprinkling of wins, a smattering of losses, but most importantly a good final run-out for most of our teams prior to the start of the league next weekend. You'll find the scores below. Inauspicious perhaps - but don't forget that we always take a while to get going. Can Team 5 and the Dragons buck the trend and keep their pre-season form going? No predictions here (ahem), but read your Tribune each week to keep in the know.

Men's 3s vs. H&W 4s: lost 2-7
A rather haphazard start to the season as JT left his troops to enjoy the last of his pre-season holidays in Puerto Banus, where he managed to sustain an injury from break dancing rather than hockey. Key moments in the game saw us on the unfortunate end of a 7-2 defeat, firstly me having to umpire, Alex McDonald getting injured and the opposition being far better organised than ourselves. At least we scored 2 goals directly from short corners, the first coming from a great drag flick from Nick Harris for Geoff to prod home and the second from a clinical strike from new boy Afzaal. 'Not the start to the season we wanted but at least it was only a friendly'. (NJ)
Team: Schoolie, Thom Ruane, Simon Wilshire, Afzaal, Chris De Sousa, Nick Harris, Wesley Cole, Mike Killen, Foggy, Alex McDonald Neil Vose, Geoff Pritchard, Nick Jacob.
Scorers: Geoff & Afzaal

Tornados vs. H&W 7s: lost 0-2
The start of another campaign and it looks like there could be somethig special happening down the end of the garden! With the usual suspects dusting off their shinnies & sticks there seemed to be a special bit of belief wafting around the camp, like one of Doog's tackles. The signs are there but the interplay isn't... the league hasn't started yet. H&W start their pre-season much earlier than us - and it shows. But on their next visit... I can assure you... they won't like it up them. The game was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests... the tornados may only be a summer breeze at the moment, but the Isely Brothers will have trouble making themselves heard over our roar once the real games start! Diamonds vs. H&W Thirsts: lost 1-6
Thank goodness we had this friendly to blow some cobwebs out of the system. With none of last season's back row available for us, and Hampstead borrowing the front row of three from the side which played JT's thirds in the preceding game, there's really not a lot worth remembering, let alone reporting. JT's lot obviously didn't tire these guys out half enough - maybe they were saving themselves for a starring role with us, because we also had to borrow three. Harry Twort scored our only goal of the game, putting himself top of the list for at least a week - can't see him getting back there again, though, as this was his last game with us before starting at Leeds Uni. Women's 2s vs. Wimbledon: lost 1-2
What a good start to the season we had. The 2s saw the welcome return of Lucy Partington and Kate Selway who both had a great first game back.We re-introduced ourselves to the hockey stick and ball, gently warmed up and started the match in a positive mode. Pace on the ball was good and accuracy of our pass was well almost accurate. Alex H and Shorty were as always distributing the ball right and left while Liz and Serra were working hard to get it up to our forwards. A lucky break from Wimbledon saw them work their way up their end of the pitch to gain a short corner, which they scored from. As a team we were working well together and had many shots on goal, but they just did not make it to the back of the net. Sadly on a couple of occasions we were beaten by the umpire who would not play the advantage, even though the ball had gone over the line and we had scored. Again another good break away by Wimbledon and dare I say it scored a cracking goal on another short corner. We powered on, worked hard to get the ball up to our 'D' and we finally got the goal we deserved. Towards the end we tired, mainly mewhen on more than one occasion I was at the wrong end of the pitch - yes I need to work on my fitness. But we ended the game in high spirits - ok we lost 2-1 but it really should have been a 2-2 draw. Well done Shorty for player of the match and good goal Liz. Thank you also to Dulcie for standing in for George who by the way also had a fantastic game and made some good saves. (LM)

Women's 3s vs. Wimbledon: lost 1-0
The 3s and 4s pulled together for the first friendly of the season - so it was a bit of a scratch team but we got to know each other and decided to go for it. We improved dramatically throughout the game, however, as they seemed predominantly to come from the southern hemisphere, the bright sunshine seemed to be to Wimbledon's advantage in the end as they scored a goal in the dying minutes of the game just as the heat was getting to us. Oh well - it was just a practice..... (CW)

Women's 5s vs. Hendon: won 2-0
T5's game on Saturday was just as we like games to be: in the sunshine, in the afternoon and ending in victory. Two well-earned goals - one from Penny off a through ball by Kathryn O and the other from Carmel, slyly touching in Penny's cross. The wonderful pitch-side teas provided by members of the teamrounded off the afternoon perfectly. No injuries - although personally I'm still feeling my age after the opposition's centre-forward whom I was marking kept on calling their right wing "Mum". Many thanks to Aidan Brock for umpiring single-handedly. (FB)

Women's 6s vs. Shirley: lost 2-8
On a glorious sunny day with just eleven players (who had not met before let alone played together), we took on a team two divisions higher. Lack of fitness from the summer and injuries showed but we should not be too disheartened we can only improve. We did have a penalty flick awarded to us which was very exciting- but luck just did not go our way. Many apologies to Alice for the lack of marking we promise to improve that. Thanks also to Mark and Tim for umpiring and to Wendy for making up the numbers. (VW)

Dragons vs. Strollers: won 4-2
The season hasn't started and we're winners already. The strollers were walked off the pitch! Storming down to SW London with a new look team and the same 'we always win' attitude. No-one stood out because everyone was brilliant. Michelle out did everyone by taking herself and Lucy's & Gemma's kit to Battersea Park instead of Raynes Park but delving into the unfathomable depths of multiple hockey bags resulted in barely enough kit to field a team for the first half. By the time Michelle arrived the game was beyond doubt. The mixed team is on fire already and it looks like compeition for places will be more contested than an eBay auction for Christopher Reeve's wheelchair... don't get a ringseat, get in the game.. why watch winners when you can be one? (MJ)
Team: Jeremy Porter (GK), MJ, James Perrott, Nick Jacob, Mark Annear, Lee Snowden, Ian Cooper, Nick Thomson, Liz Young, Lucy Muldoon, Gemma Baker, Sarah Longair, Claire Whitehead, Michelle Morgan.
Scorers: Gemma Baker (2), Nick Jacob & Liz Young. |
