Mixed League & Cup

The Sunday mixed league has been revamped a bit this year and is now up and running as a proper competitive league. The emphasis is still on being 'friendly' but for the first time there will be a league table... and a champion! In addition to this the Dragons have entered the National Cup. Anyone interested in being part of the team should watch out for more information in the first few weeks of the season.

Social Events

The club has already got the diary out and filled it up for the year. If you want to know what is being planned and you want to make sure you get a 'pass' that night then check out the new events page!

East Grinstead Saints & Sinners Mixed Festival (26/29-Aug-05)

It was a gloriously sunny day and despite the desire to watch the Aussies get a well-deserved spanking from the English in the Ashes there were more important things to be considered. The Dragons were competing in the Saints & Sinners Festival at East Grinstead Sports Club. Sadly, there had been real difficulty in getting a side out and the ony option was to send a seriously depleted side down to the festival with the hope of borrowing some players on arrival.

Recruiting players to help from the bar resulted in offers from, among others, a current England Vets player and an U21 Dutch International. Clearly, playing for the dragons was viewed as an honour!

The first day saw the side lose just the once against the Guildford LadyBoys after what can only be considered an onslaught! 1-0 was a lucky result. However, the rest of the matches that day could easily have gone either way but one ended up as a draw and the other as a win. However, the team kept fighting throughout the weekend and, after some very heavy drinking on the Saturday night, started Sunday at 9am with the first of three consecutive wins.

There was sterling performances all round and the plaudits goas much to the regulars as they do to the ringers! Although, the Scottish girls clearly won the drinking in the evening.

Aidan played a blinder in goal for the Dragons and anyone else who asked, Tom netted a brilliant teaser of a goal on the water based, Snowy scored a screamer of a reverse stick net-buster, Chris forced teh opposition to defend heartily until a bizarre toilet injury fored him to pull out, Mark pulled out a sublime reverse stick stop, drag and flick to clear the lines, while Isla constantly broke down their attacks on the left and Emma was on hand to provide over 70% of the days crosses.

The weekend's results were as follows:

Match Result Scorers
Bath Rangers D0-0
Guildford LadyBoys L0-1
Scouting 4 Beavers W2-1 Snowy, Weenie
Suffolk'N'Good W2-0 Martin, Shadow
Hilbede Old Boys W2-0 Tom, Weenie
Whackdaddies W2-1 Martin, Snowy

Would the Dragons go again? Without a doubt, although this time it would be nice to take a full team. That said there's plenty of people ready to offer to join this legendary side if we can't get them from the club!

Team: Aidan Brock(GK), MJ, Tom Alexander, Lee Snowden, Chris 'Sicknote' Richman, Emma Gilchrist, Isla McGregor... with help from Martin, Martin's daughter, Betty Boo, Shadow, Weenie & a random drunk girl in a visor. Back to top <<<

Guildford LadyBoys Mixed Festival (15/17-Jul-05)

Guildford Squad 2005
Posh Picnic

The Guildford tour is without doubt one of the highlights of the summer hockey season. Great weather, great company and mostly great hockey. Saturday was our day of champagne hockey..... Nick J and Loz carved the defence up at the front, JC..... ran all day and showed some silky skills and Tom was the rock in defence. The girls generally showed the boys how to score goals (Rebecca, Donna and Lou, the latter in spite of the significant amount of champagne that she was carrying from the night before). Then we encountered the Hampstead team - who were under the illusion that we were playing some sort of cup final rather than festival hockey....so after quite a bit of swearing at JC, Nick and the umpires, they suddenly realised we had beaten them convincingly by three goals. We strolled off to our secluded encampment for afternoon tea and some pastries. Add that win to the other three and all was going to plan .....an immaculate goal keeping performance saw Skoolie in charge of a clean sheet at the end of day one.

And then the wheels came off - Saturday night saw us dressed to kill in cowboys and indians fancy dress. Anna P showed her Birmingham roots and arrived with no fewer than 5 "toy" guns.........Will was finemaster and employed the sambucca bottle to devastating effect, the early and late casualties of which were the Nicks. Nick T won his race round the field against the fox, but then made the mistake of taking on the frog - and fell over before it fell in the pond. Nick J got past the frog........but not out of the tent in time. Liz and Rebecca were clearly delighted. The Morgans never left the dance floor (clearly too embarrassed by their matching tent 'n' umbrella combo to go home) and the rest of the team never made it on...........EJ was apparently trying but couldn't see the dancefloor for the man in the very very large headdress until it was way too late.......

Smart in Guildford!Sunday dawned very very bright and far too early for some class sambucca hockey. Skill was optional, coordination absent and the finishing was.......finished. Nick T mistook his team mates for the frog and wreaked havoc - Lou received a black eye to prove it. Not even the star Partington performance (not mine, couldn't even make it onto the pitch) and the arrival of JC fresh as a daisy after a civilised evening on the roof terrace (darling) in London could lift us. Fortunately the downturn in performance was all in the game plan to ensure that we didn't have to play in the final at 4. We drew two, lost one and went into the final game of the weekend almost on our knees but assured that the last pool game was the very last - and won with style. There was a slightly scary moment when our only winning oppo suddenly had an attack of conscience (or sunstroke) and owned up to playing 6 lads against us. We graciously declined the points and retired to lunch secure in our moral victory and second place in our group. An excellent weekend with an excellent group of people - huge thanks to Mark Jones for organising, all those who umpired and to the team as a whole for making it as usual one of the best tours every summer.

Spencer 7s (02-Apr-05)

A rare sunny afternoon in early April and the touring season was officially underway. Not that the paint on the 'End of Season' sign was dry yet, in fact some teams were still playing re-scheduled league matches and a spattering of cup matches. Still, the Dragons have always had strength in depth and managed to pull together a world class team from around the... ah... world. The Spencer 7s are a strange event... three grass pitches with not quite enough goals, nearly enough teams and nowhere near enough alcohol all nestled sweetly in a converted scout hut in deepest, darkest Earlsfield.

The Dragons had been here before, no stranger to Spencer, grass hockey or being and playing drunk. The competition was split off into three pools the winner of each pool and the best runner up over-all contested a semi " final for the honour of having won the competition - a feat that would have been remembered for hours. This year was to have a slightly new format as the Dragons were the 2nd best runners-up and promptly introduced a plate competition against the 3rd place runners-up which they just as swiftly lost.

Still that aside, it was a welcome start to the touring season... a nice friendly day of hockey, next to the bar that enabled the league season and touring season to seamlessly pass from one to another without anyone really noticing.

The results were as follows:

Match Result Scorers
Pool Game 1 L2-3 MJ / Vicky
Pool Game 2 D2-2 Tom / Beth
Pool Game 3 W3-1 MJ / Linds / Loz
Plate Final L1-3 Nick

Team: Jeremy Porter (GK), MJ, Tom Alexander, Nick Jacobs, Loz Mockery, JT, Lindsey Mclaren, Anna Stuttard, Beth Little, Vicky Wright & Maurissa Allen.

Mascots: Simon Riley & Rebecca Ridgeway. Back to top <<<
