Newsletter 2006/07
Since 2003/04 the club has produced weekly match reports. From the start of the 2005/06 season this became a weekly newsletter, distributed during the season, containing match reports from each of the games played that weekend as well as other key information and a selection of adverts and offers.
Tues 02-Oct-06Issue 01
Apologies for the tardiness of this weeks bulletin, when Mark goes on holiday, everything falls to pieces, so here are the reports from some scintillating games of two weekends ago. Some notable wins in the first league games the Ladies 4s demolished their home counties opposition in fine style while the Ladies 1s and 2s enjoying solid and encouraging victories. The Mens 6s romped home with an enviable scoreline with great expectations for the start of the league. Tickets are now available for the Awards dinner, now less than two weeks away, get them from the social champion for your team, an evening not to be missed with gongs awarded to the stars of 2005-6 and general merriment to kick off the forthcoming season.

Men's 1s vs Blackheath: Won 9-0 (Friendly)
In the final build up match to England's ill fated world cup campaign they bulldozed a pedestrian Jamaican team 7-0. Our match against Blackheath followed a similar script as the opposition opted for a very accommodating half court press gifting us a more than generous amount of time to decide how we would next attack.
Our first goal came from of an audacious raid down the right hand channel (courtesy of Tulse Hill's new midfield maestro (the author)) which was slipped across the goal for Jimmy Ireson to nip in to slot home the opener. Man of the match and hatrick hero Rob Heath added a second before Chris "Smudge" Smith, Tulse Hill's Cafu, flew down the right hand side, showing a turn of pace which almost surprised his own team as much as the opposition. Fortunately for us Dave Casement was expecting such a surge and duly nutmegged Blackheath's number one from the dynamic right back's defence splitting pass. On his fashionably late return to 1st team action Jack Davidson neatly put away the fourth, before Ireson, swapping his shovel for a hockey stick, drove from one side of the pitch to the other before drilling a vicious shot past the now despairing Blackheath goalkeeper.
After half time Casement artfully flicked a cross across his body for his second and our sixth. This was followed by a wonderfully disguised strike from Heath, resulting from a well drilled short corner routine epitomising the careful preparation which should underpin this team's success. Jack added the eighth (which I can't really remember) and Rob Heath finished the rout with a sliding tap-in. After this promising start (controversial yellow cards aside) lets just hope we're in for a far more exciting and ultimately successful season than Sven's boys could manage.

Mens 2s vs Old Loughts 2s: Lost 2-3 (Friendly)
Upon Wes marking his first ever game as 3s captain by cancelling the game (sharp darts mate!) the 2s managed to grace the pitch with a record break squad of 16. One of these being the newly found THD goal scoring machine Aidan Brock who lived up to expectation by opening the scoring inside the first 5 minutes. Some out of character defending (not brutal) allowed them to equalise and take the game into half time all square. Stuff happened in the second half...Nurse scored short corner. They scored twice. Liverpool scored thrice.

Tornados vs Blackheath Heathens: Won 10-5 (Friendly)
A real Jeykll & Hyde performance that was slightly more Dr Jeykll than Mr Hyde but the signs are there. With a week's break and a little soul searching this Frankenstein's Monster of a team should end up less of a mythical beast and more of a fairytale princess as the season progresses. If hockey was cosmetic surgery then watch Jade Goody slowly transform into Jessica Alba as each match is played. Although, if we only make it as far as Molly Ringwald it should still be enough to win the league.

Diamonds vs Old Loughtonians 5s: Lost 1-5 (Friendly)
Bring on the winter and a bit of wind and rain. Miserable thought I know, but Saturday's second-half collapse against Old Loughts suggested that anything sunny and above 10 degrees might have the Diamonds struggling. The game at sun-kissed JAGs started well enough, with THD putting more experienced opponents under pressure and battling strongly for every ball. Midfielder Simon Canter scored a fine equaliser from the edge of the circle and all seemed well at half-time. The break did THD few favours and amid tiring legs, Old Loughts dominated the second half, as their tactic of getting the ball to the "big fella" up front reaped rewards. The Diamonds had no such outlet and will need to find a regular scorer soon if the forthcoming season in a higher division is to be a success. It all starts next week with the visit of Hampstead & Westminster 6s to JAGs. Let's hope for rain.... (GE)

Royals vs Old Loughtonians Loppers: Won 7-1 (Friendly)
Well thats it were buggered. Not only have we used up our one big score of the season I suspect we have also used up the majority of our goals as well. In truth this was very much a friendly result although the game was competetive I am not sure that Old Loughts heads will go down quite so quickly in the league games. However it is always nice to get a big win and to get one the week before the league starts should give us plenty of confidence for when the important stuff starts next week.
The game started fairly evenly with prehaps the Loppers being on top for the first ten or so minutes, creating but wasting a few chances. Then at our first short corner Mehraab scored after putting in the rebound from the first shot. This didnt really change the game that much with the Loppers continuing to press but then the game changed all together. The intorducion of Thomas and Stephen from the bench proved very decisive with the game being put out of the Loppers reach by three quick goals all from flowing attacks. So 4 0 at half time and I really wasnt sure what to say on the backboard.
The second half started much the same as the first ended with us on top, attacking in waves and piling people forward, although we couldnt add to our advantage it was only a matter of time. The Loppers were the first to score though with a well worked short corner, however that and a another good save was really the only two things that Gavin had to do.
As the half wore on, the Loppers got more down hearted as their attacks broke like waves on our resolute defence and we finally started to take our chances with three more goals being scored in the last fifteen minutes.
So an excellent result against a side in our league whom we always have close games with. As said above though the serious stuff starts next week at home to Maidenhead with a good start to the league vital for our team ambitions. Thank you to all who played and thank you to Billy for umpiring.
Team: Gavin Lawson, Tim Smith, Hamza, Stephen Higgs, Thomas, Andy Bond, Tom Shaw, Mark Annear, Mike Wright, Mehraab Nazir, Ed Allen, Kim Keats, Chris Richman, Akash, Stephen Ireton. Scorers: Mehraab Nazir (2), Thomas (2) Ed Allen, Chris Richman, Kim Keats
Ladies 1s v Maidenhead 1s: Won 2-0
Maidenhead were a tough opposition last season, and we anticipated no different this year. Fortunately, we had a good squad of 13, so even if Lou got carted off to hospital again we would at least be able to field a full side for the rest of the game. Determined to get off to a better start to the season than last year, the team arrived in good spirits, with everyone there on time and with EJ virtually ready to play just so that she was able to wear her new astros before leaving the house. But onto the game.....Maidenhead came at us hard from the start, and none of us were able to hit, stop or pass the ball (unless it was directly to the opposition). So much for the part of Will's pre-game chat where we were told to 'keep possession, particularly in our half....'. After hanging on for 15 minutes or so, during which Pipes made a great save to keep us in it, we started to settle into our game and got a bit more control. Maidenhead, though, didn't let up and won several short corners, which i am pleased to report we defended really well. So well on one, in fact, that we managed to turn defense into attack, the forwards countering quickly and creating the opportunity for yours truly to get on the end of a rebounded shot and put the ball past the keeper. Ten minutes later Alex made it two, slotting a well struck penalty corner under the keepers legs, an advantage which we took into half time.
Team: Pipes, Alex Crawford, Kath Sowter, Clare Byrne, Nicky Prior, Bettina Wolff, Gemma Baker, Lisa Cox, EJ Barry, Lou Morgan, Sharon Smith, Martha Harvey-Jones & Faye Billing Scorers: Gemma & Alex MotM: Kath & Gemma Next Match: Home v West Witney - 12.30pm @ DC
Womens 2s v Old Georgians: Won 5-1
This 5-1 victory was the ideal start to our league season. There was a hattrick for our newest recruit Claire, and one each for the Emma and Rosie at left and right mid. There was a warm welcome back for Zoey who helped create chances up front at regular intervals in both halves and a fond farewell to Harriet who is off to Durham Uni, hopefully taking with her a slightly larger bag than the one she usually brings to hockey. Well deserved player of the match, narrowly pipping Claire to the post, was Biba, relishing her new role at centre mid. The goal against us was a penalty stroke - undeserved to judge from the angle I had of Blumes! We had so much possession in our top third that we often found it difficult to create enough space to work the ball through, but by 5-1 we had done enough for that not to get us down. A couple of the oppo had slight sense of humour failures, but our rarely-in-error back 4 crew led by Shorty in the middle must have been a considerable frustration to them throughout the game.
Those loving it were: George, Lucy P, Blumes, Shorty, Lucy M, Biba, Rosie, Emma, Claire, Kate S, Zoey, Harriet. Scorers: hattrick from Claire, 1 each for Rosie and Emma Umpire: Richard Mead Next match: 30 Sept v. Reigate, 2pm at Reigate Grammar School
Womens 3s v. Merton 1s: Lost 1-6
Upon arrival each team member was met with "have you ever played in goal"? prompting a flurry of raised eyebrows and Nos! New defender Jen bravely volunteered though, and once padded up the team looked the part?new kit and all. Merton unfortunately dominated the first half which quickly saw the 3rds 4-0 down. However, just before the half-time whistle Beth found the back of the net in a deserved short corner. Despite vastly upping our game in the second half we conceded a further two goals bringing the final scoreline to 6-1. After some wise (and unfortunately apt) words from the coach Peter (you would be 50% better if you were all 20% fitter.) the team, although defeated were left hopeful with the potential shown.
