Newsletter 2006/07

Since 2003/04 the club has produced weekly match reports. From the start of the 2005/06 season this became a weekly newsletter, distributed during the season, containing match reports from each of the games played that weekend as well as other key information and a selection of adverts and offers.

Fri 06-Oct-06

Issue 02

With the heatwave of September now at an end and the threat of an Indian summer dispelled, our weather system finally suggests that the autumn season is upon us and with it a flurry of league games including some nail-bitingly close results. The ladies in general were on the winning side of the delicately balanced matches this week, with particular mention to the 4s, who came back from two goals down to win, and the 1s and 2s, all of whom are top or equal on points of their respective leagues. The Men’s 2s also sneaked a victory setting up a top of the table South London clash this weekend.

Our juniors continue to do the club proud, and we heard this week that Rosie Carter has been made captain of the Surrey U18 girls team and Arthur Mitchell will captain the Surrey U16 boys team – our congratulations to both of them.

We would also like to pass on the sad news that Hugh Alexander, who umpired for Tulse Hill in the 90s, died in May this year. He had been diagnosed with cancer a year previously. We extend our sympathies to Mags and to Tom, who plays for the Tornados and remember Hugh's contribution to the club.

Men’s 1st XI vs. Gore Court: Lost 2-1

As the summer sun fades and the autumnal air turns crisp, now is the time to consider planting your bulbs to give them plenty of time to bed in ready for a spring display of colour. Tulse Hill on Saturday planted two of their young bulbs, Simon Glasson (18) and Jack Davidson (18), into the sandy soil of Gore Court, hoping that investment now will reap rewards later in the season. Lining up alongside these evergreens were some hardy perennials (Ireson, Balchin, Banwell, Weir, Casement, Eames & Smith), three exotic "Africanis Sudis" (Boucher, Heath & Duncan), a fruity fleur-de-lys (Ferron) and a Scottish thistle (Fotherington).

The show started promisingly, with a lovely mix young and old combining to win a first minute penalty that was unfortunately missed. TH&D then struggled to put roots down in the sandy soil and were left gasping for air as one "Africanis Sudis" was ripped from the bed and thrown on the compost heap for 10 minutes. In this period, the red and green flowers were overrun by blue weeds and conceded two short corners. Restored to full bloom, TH&D got a goal back through Boucher, upon his return to the field.

In the second half, a freshly-watered team worked hard to reclaim lost territory and successfully pruned the opposition attacks, with the goalkeeper excelling in particular. Despite a series of half chances the team could not press home their advantage, even as Gore Court suffered twin expulsions to the compost heap.

In summary, there have been worse starts to the autumnal season and with a little care and attention, some weed killer and plant feed, this team could grown into a robust chrysogonum virginianum within weeks. Certainly, they have nothing to fear from the winter frost. (JI)

Team: Duncan Mercian, Andrew Eames, Gary Boucher, Gaz Weir, Richard Banwell, Chris Smith, Graeme Fotherington, Simon Glasson, James Ireson, Jack Davidson, Rob Heath, Laurent Ferron & Dave Casement.

Next game: vs West Hampstead, Home start 2pm tbc

Men's 2s vs. Hampstead and Westminster 3s: Won 2-1

On our first league outing of the season, we turned up to the ground where we had been beaten by the same opposition two weeks early and were without the guidance of our tough talking captain but under the management of the face of Dulwich (aka Hoff/Ferg) typically known for his laid back, ‘play where you want to’, total hockey.

Having decided where everyone was going to play, we got going at a slightly slower pace than desired but were lucky enough to go ahead midway through the first half through Aidan passing a great ball to Nick who ran (and passed!) for Matt Groom to neatly tuck into the corner from just inside the D. Following this we began to get our game together and dominate in midfield with Sam, Paul and co. showing great work rates in the middle.

In the second half H&W pushed forward and had a couple of chances with Piggy making a couple of great saves and solid defending at the back. As they got the equaliser it looked like the match was going to be settled as a draw until the Paul ‘Aido’ Warhurst scrambled one in for us to take the fully deserved three points.

Nice to see such a good team effort in the first game of the season, a great spear tackle from Sam on their biggest player, thanks for turning up Ed (we did not need you) and nice goal from Potty (or not!) (NJ)

Team: Will Pigden, Tom Mottram, Ferg Jagger, Dan Ellis, Alex Brown, Paul Harvey, Joe Griff, Matt Groom, Sam Hiley, Nick Jacob, Andy Potapa, Aidan Brock, Ben Wordsworth

Umpire: 2 of them

Scorer: 2 of us! (Aido and Matt Groom)

Next match: Saturday 7th October vs. London Wayfarers 2s - 12.30 home (Massive Top of the table clash)

Men’s 3s vs. Hampstead and Westminster 4s: Lost 3 - 0

Timmy's first comment as he rocked up on Saturday morning kind of said it all. "I've played 5 games for Tulse Hill ever, and 3 have been against this lot, and they're good!" And he was right, we lost to them last game of least season to knock us off the play-off spot and last week in a friendly so we're getting to know them well. As with the friendly, we held ourselves well and controlled for 25 minutes much to their frustration, but two excellently executed shortcorners broke the deadlock and a breakaway goal sealed a 0-3 defeat for TH. Positives were taken away, if we can defend like that against most teams in our league we'll do well but we need to take our chances in front of goal. Is the blonde haired wonder boy back in town??? Just maybe. (WC)

Team: Jeremy, Wes, Alex McDonald , Tom Hulbert, Lioness, Foggy, Ed Gardiner, Nick Harris, Will Lucas , Steve Reeve, Timmy, Adam Taylor, Rob Layton, Rob Glavin

Tornados - No game

Diamonds vs. Hampstead & Westminster 6s: Lost 1-4

Conceding three goals in the opening 25 minutes was hardly the best start to life in a higher division. While the opposition looked strong, the promotion-winning form shown by the Diamonds last season should have been enough to make this a much closer contest. For some reason the ball was given away cheaply, and before the Diamonds had time to settle the game was pretty much up – despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Paul Reid. There was the consolation of a magnificent short-corner strike from Arthur Mitchell just before half-time, and individual performances improved reassuringly after the break. A couple more short-corner opportunities might have given the scoreline a different look, but without the guile of Warren Holme in midfield there never looked like being sufficient goalmouth action at the right end to turn this game around. (GE)

Ladies 1s vs. West Witney 1s: Won 1-0

For the past couple of seasons, West Witney have been our nemesis (or bogey-team) - in the last four outings we've not really played as well as we could have and have generally been runners-up or scraped a draw. Despite the result this game was, unfortunately, not much different (plus we were missing 4 squad members who were, for various reasons, dotted around Europe). But saying that, the remaining 11 (plus Lucy P who offered an injury replacement service while fielding a number of conference calls on the side line) were determined not to walk away from this game empty handed. Shame, then, that it was Witney who came out the more determined, playing a high press and generally dominating the game for the first 15 minutes.

After a couple of scares (mainly those where we hit the ball direct to the oppo CF for a 1-on-1 with Pipes, who saved magnificently) we clawed our way back into the game and started to threaten Witney's goal, rather than just defend ours. Sharon had a great game up front, getting into great positions for a shot and was unlucky not to convert. And as we gained confidence we started winning short corners - which is generally considered to be a good thing - but with all our 'strikers' out of the country, a last minute practice session at training saw Lisa step into the fold. It wasn't, perhaps, the prettiest of goals, but they all count, and on 20 minutes, Lisa gave us the lead. Unbeknown to us, Will had, apparently, been getting more and more agitated on the sideline and if it hadn't been for the goal and some seriously better hockey in the last 15 minutes, the veins on his forehead might actually have exploded. So we all enjoyed a slightly more relaxed team talk.

Unfortunately, the second half wasn't too dissimilar to the first. There were some seriously dodgy tackles (from both sides) - most of which resulted in 'play on....', more giving of possession to West Witney and more chances that we should have put away. Still, everyone worked incredibly hard - with only 11 there were some tired legs at the end, but we hung on. Just. Two wins from two games - can't complain! (GB)

Team: Pipes, Clare Byrne, Kath Sowter, Hilary Collins, Nicky Prior, Faye Billing, Gemma Baker, Lisa Cox, Rosie Carter, Lou Morgan, Sharon Smith & Lucy Partington

Scorer: Lisa Cox

MotM: Lou Morgan - for her tireless work (although I'd also like to mention Rosie, who played a blinder up front and Clare who did the same at RB)

Next game: Away v Richmond, 11.45 start

Ladies 2s vs. Reigate Priory 1s: Won 3-2

What a great start to the season we are having! Our first away game this season, and our first tough opposition, Reigate. Our first 10 minutes were not that hopeful as they were beating us to the ball and scored first due to some poor defending on our part. (Sorry George.) After this we raised our game and went in guns blazing ready to get it back. With the backs working hard to get it out of our defence we kept the ball moving down the right and with some set play (something of a reflection of what Will has been trying to drum into us), played it into our D and then back out to Biba perfectly positioned at the top of the D to finish with a fantastic strike and a wonderful goal. Brilliant – go Biba! I don’t think Shorty missed a tackle for about 20 mins and she made it very difficult for Reigate to play up the middle which is what they liked to do. We ended the first half 1-1 (I think) some wise words from Gordon but then AAAAAHhhhhhhhhh they got a short corner and scored, suddenly they were winning. Losing was not an option for us and this was evident by the skill and determination from a captain Kato. It came over to the left and I was there 5 yards outside the D, after making some serious boobs on a few free hits I was determined to get this one right, and thankfully I did - straight into the D down to the girls on the right post and with a little fuss Beth got a good goal. Woo, hoo, go (again) Beth!

To cut a long story short we all were working tirelessly (Emma K just not stopping, Zoey picking up some great balls in the D, Claire having some great moments up front, Hannah keeping us in check at the back and our guests Beth and Emma P having also great games) and even Oz getting smacked in the mouth did not stop us from driving forward. We finally got another short corner. Kato coming over with a look in her eyes that would bring her sons to tears, straight strike was called. Another great stop from Shorty and there it was, the winning goal, BANG straight into the back goal….. GOOOOOOOOOO KATO.

We did it, we got it back. We held them off well for the last 10 minutes by keeping the ball moving and the final whistle went. WE WON, we were all smiling to ear to ear. I could go on and on. Kato was a very deserved player of the match. Looking forward to longbeard and little P being back for what will be the great Blumes’ last game for a while. LOVE IT (LM)

Womens 3s - No game

Ladies’ 4s vs. Horley 1s: Won 3-2

Still TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

Two wins in as many games at the start of the season...well we might start getting ideas above our station soon. Another game against a rather depleted opposition, on the worst sand sodden pitch ever, VERY early in the morning. We were not really at our best in the first half, and Horley took an early 2-0 lead with an easy first goal and then a penalty flick. It was not looking good....then new recruit Robyn stormed onto the pitch and scored within minutes, closely followed by Claire slamming in a penalty corner just before half time. The team took the demand to pass wide and round the back to heart in the second half, and we started to look really quite professional. Another goal, and the win was secured....not to say that there weren’t some heart stopping moments – and some infuriating ones when Robyn’s goal was declared to have been shot outside of the D. Week off next week – I think we deserve it! (CW)

Team: Sally Shepard, Lindsey McLaren, Sarah Anderson, Lucy Snell, Suzy Medcalf, Mary Cook, Selina Leleu, Lynne Ruddick, Jena Kitley, Kate Lievesley, Penny Ganser, Robyn Still, Claire Whitehead.

Scorers: Claire – 2; Robyn - 1

Next Match: Saturday 14th at Bank of England vs. London Edwardians

Women's 5s vs. Wanderers 5s: Lost 2-0

T5 lost to a brace of goals at the mid point of each half, apart from those Ellie, our newest recruit kept them out with a fine string of saves including a one on one. We realised at the key moment we hadn't practiced penalty flicks or knew who would take one. Wendy stood up to do the deal but the goalkeeper kept the aerial shot out. The team still need to gel together a bit more, something that should be rectified by next weekends social... (BM)
