Newsletter 2006/07
Since 2003/04 the club has produced weekly match reports. From the start of the 2005/06 season this became a weekly newsletter, distributed during the season, containing match reports from each of the games played that weekend as well as other key information and a selection of adverts and offers.

Half term brought forth only a handful of games with all the ladies teams and the Men’s 2s enjoying a well-earned rest. But there is plenty to celebrate, in particular, the glimmers of a return to form for the Men’s 1s and the Men’s 6s, both securing first wins of the season with plenty of goals to enjoy, and the Dragons who stayed strong during the deluge to dictate the downfall of the Daquiris.
Finally, we finish today with an update from the Junior section. Teams of coaches, volunteers and parents are creating high quality hockey training for ever-increasing numbers of local youngsters, building strong foundations for the future of the club.
This weekend will see both the Men’s and Ladies’ second teams attempts to continue their unbeaten runs – more self-congratulation from Messrs Jacob and Coleman? Or a crashing return to earth? Bring on Saturday…

Men’s 1s vs. Wimbledon won 5-1
For some watching last Saturday it may have appeared that the opposition from Wimbledon seemed fittingly more prepared for a couple of leisurely sets on the hallowed turf of SW19 than for potentially tough bottom-of-the-table tussle. This is not to detract however, from a far improved performance from the home side, which notched up its first point of this campaign. To say the display was grass-court perfection as only Federer knows, would do the Swiss an injustice, but it was certainly comparable to a fist-clenching, centre court inspired Henman someway through the second half of the Wimbledon fortnight.
A deserved two goal lead was halved just after the interval, but the home side consolidated and started to hold its serve with ease. A Saturday afternoon hockey equivalent of Sampras at his serving best, accompanied by the Edberg backhand volley, the grass court athleticism of Becker and the long-haired, bandana flair of Bjorn Borg. All that was needed were a few blistering returns of serve, which duly arrived, one of them a beauty from the reverse stick of Gaz Weir. This followed two earlier second half breaks of serve.
So its time to ditch the whites, pour away the Barley Water and take stock for the Flushing Meadows of Fareham and Gatorade or some appalling artificial alternative. Let’s hope however that next week is more sweet than bitter. (JV)

Men's 3s vs. Southgate 3A's Lost 6-3
4-1 down at half time isn't ideal but we thought we'd launch the kitchen sink at it and it worked !!! Pully launched a typical rocket 60 yards and southgate watched as a ginger oompaloompa appeared at the back post in the form of Foggy and flicked a beauty through his legs in typical 'Henry' style. A bit more scrapping around it was 4-3 through Timmy nice slot and then Mr Huntley missed a flick, we played with 10 up front and lost 6-3.
Had the making of a dream recovery but didn't quite work. Tell you what though, it made for good viewing, thanks to the cheerleadering WAGS for watching and polishing off a bottle of wine each. (WC)

Diamonds vs. Surbiton 5s: Lost 1-2
With a bunch of new faces this week – Dan, Colin, Andrew, Wes & Beano – a new-look Diamonds side had plenty of optimism going into our third League game. It took us a while to find our collective feet, however, and we found ourselves 0-2 down after 20 minutes. Beano reduced the deficit before the interval, and the second half saw us put the Surbiton goal under regular pressure....... They held firm, unfortunately, and the result leaves us still with nul points, but the optimism is still there, since we all feel that things are coming together. The early season whippings have now become very close games, and the tide will soon turn. Maidenhead look out. (BD)

Royals vs. St Albans Citizens: Won 6 – 2
The omens for this game weren’t good. Train at 9:30 in the morning, nine players mid week and a really shocking weather forecast. However my pessimistic attitude proved to be unwarranted.
St Albans started by passing the ball around well at the back but this lasted for as long as it took us to score and even though they equalised shortly after this they never really got their passing game back together as we created lots of chances and went into half time 4 – 1 to the good.
This seemed to sting the oppo and they came out in the second half with renewed enthusiasm and a more direct style which saw them pull one back but we were never in any real trouble and underlined our superiority with two more goals to complete the scoring.
In truth we should have really got to double figures with plenty of chances being missed including a flick by yours truly but it is still our first league win of the season and hopefully the springboard to getting our season going in the right direction. Thanks to all for being available to make the journey and special thanks to Mr Jacob who journeyed from Oxford and Mr Pritchard who came from Aylesbury to help us in our hour of need. (CR)

Tulse Hill & Dulwich Junior Hockey ClubMid Term ReportThe Juniors go from strength to strength. We had anticipated that there would be an increase in numbers this year and had planned for this by setting out to recruit more adult coaches and crucially more young volunteers. To provide a top quality experience for the new young players, we have gathered together an experienced group of adult coaches. We have been joined by a Level 2 coach, Paul Sheppard; Snep, who worked with the tinys last year has stayed for the whole three hours; Michelle has brought her daughter and coached for two hours; Steve P. and Alex have been around for the whole morning, except when Alex is off at county trials; Ferret has been a regular helper; last but by no means least, Marilyn has overseen the registers and sorted out general administration admirably – the first batch of shirts should arrive just after half term, so I’m told. (Hope, I haven’t missed anyone out!)
The number of young volunteers has exceeded our wildest expectations. There have been 12 in all over the first six weeks of the season. One aim was to have all our coaches, both adults and children, qualified in some way. To achieve this we ran an England Hockey Young Leadership course in early October attended by 11 of our volunteers. This is a magnificent achievement and shows the commitment of the young people who have come to work within the club. So, our thanks must go to Hamza, Ed, Liam, Rosie L, Alex, Conor, Hannah, Rosie C, Lucy May, Lois, and Hamish. Your work has been invaluable.
Now to the players! We have had new players turn up every week so far. Word is spreading fast that we are providing a fun learning experience for young hockey players and we are beginning to attract players from other clubs in the area. The word is going out that THDJ is a well-run club and that the coaching is of a very good standard. At the last count, we have over 120 players registered with the Juniors. Roughly, we have 30 under 9s (10 of whom are under 7), 30 under 11s and 60 over 11/13s. We will only get bigger. We are very impressed with the calibre of the players we are attracting and the future of the club is in safe hands.
Finally, we are beginning to recruit parental help. Parents now run the coffee bar upstairs in the warmth of the Pavilion where we provide tea, coffee, biscuits, Sunday papers and even cake from time to time. Others are taking over the admin roles and we are advertising for team managers and social secretaries. The range of positive comments is too long to recite (sorry if that sounds like blowing our own trumpet, but it’s true). What parents find most important is that we are able to provide one to one coaching for children who have limited experience of playing the game and for players of greater potential.
So, there it is. We planned for growth and it has happened in spades. We are very proud of what has been achieved and see this as just the beginning. If you would like to be a part of all this then please come along. If you are a member of the club with children and would like them to start playing then here we are. I have taken some time to explain what we are doing and what has been achieved because I’m not sure that many in the club are aware of what is happening on a Sunday morning. Well, now you know. If you would like to join us then you would be most welcome. (PB)
