The Tribune

Fri 01-Dec-06

Issue 10

With the season of Advent officially upon us, the countdown to Yuletide begins, and what better way to begin the festive season than with a hot toddy, mince pie and the first door of your Tribune advent calendar. Behind door number 1, we find a rain-swept scene of jubilation of the women's 1s, 3s, 4s and men's 3s (and the Royals – see Chris’ sketchy grasp on reality), moderate acceptance from the men’s 2s and the Tornados, and wrath and rankling by the men’s 1s, Diamonds, women’s 2s, team 5 and 6s. But ‘tis the season to by jolly so onwards and upwards for points from the last few games before the much-needed Christmas break.

Important notice for this week is shameless promotion for the not-to-be-missed Christmas disco on Saturday 9th, a chance to celebrate the season thus far and enjoy a tipple and savour culinary delights with teammates in the stylish environs of the clubhouse, with irrepressibly catchy tunes from DJ disco Dave should you feel the need to throw some shapes. Get tickets from your social champions asap.

The season of overindulgence and expanding waistlines is exacerbated by the drawing to a close of training on 6 and 7 December for the women and 12 and 14 December for the men. Sessions will restart in 2007 for the women on 3 and 4 January and for the men on 9 and 10 January.

Mens 1s vs. Barnes: Lost 2-3

This was one of the most disappointing results of the season. We started brightly and took control of the game early in the 1st half. This was reflected in a goal through Rob Heath and number of chances created that did not quite find the net. Duncan did not have much to do in the first half and we continued to exert our authority. Unfortunately, one of the umpires was also struggling in the match and made a number of mistakes. A more skilled umpire would have been able to keep control of the match, but he continually showed disregard for the concerns of both teams, which was reflected in an atmosphere of utter disbelief from everyone for the remainder of the match.

In the second half, Barnes scored from a corner to level the match. We hit back later when the Pilgrims striker (Jimmy) went for the fake, took the body hit and was awarded a PK. After the keeper was shown a yellow card and a wait of ten minutes to allow an outfield player to put on the goalie kit, the penalty stroke was converted. We then failed to capitalise on the extra man advantage, the lack of a proper Barnes goal keeper and Barnes saw out the 10 minutes without conceding. Following the resumption of the match after a further ten minute delay for goalkeeper kit transfer, Barnes scored two quick goals as we failed to keep our structure. We were left extremely disheartened at the end of the match. However, some spirits were raised in the evening when Banners was foiled by a chastity fleece.

Mens 2s vs. Richmond 2s: Drew 1-1

I thought about going against tradition and actually writing about the game for a change but its Thursday now and I can’t really remember what happened. I do remember going back to see my parents after the game and having roast beef and Yorkshire pudding for dinner. It was lovely! Also went to see the new Bond movie which I can highly recommend. As for the game, it is slowly coming back to me………A young gent named Arthur step up from the 4s to score on debut (and miss a bit of a sitter but I won’t tell!) They scored. Can’t remember the goal but it was probably Piggy’s fault! Oh and on Sunday night I had Roast Chicken. That was lovely too! God bless Mums. (Mark Jones……Insert joke here!) (CC)

Foggy’s Diary, Sunday 26th Nov 2006

Dear diary,

Sorry it's been so long since I last wrote, I've been busying my little ginger self with loads of work and hockey. On Saturday we had to go on a long journey through the countryside to Chiswick. I thought I'd get the bus and the train like everyone else but I woke up late and then fell asleep on the bus and nearly missed my stop. I got there late but was ok cause so did Adam, Alex, Robbie and even Andy Balchin who kindly stepped in to umpire.

So we started 15 minutes late and then there was a storm and we all got very wet. But it was ok cause we scored loads of goals Timmy getting 2 , Adam played a blinder and got one, Ed finished a short corner really well and I scored as well. I'm still not sure how I did it but from standing still I put the ball into the roof from 2 feet away. Timmy says I defied physics with my special Oompa Loompa powers. If only they knew. I've been thinking of telling them but I'm worried I'll get picked on and treated like an outsider !

Then I went to work in my little restaurant , got there late again as well, they don't care, they let me mix my potions and don't even know !!!!

I'll write again next weekend.

Love Foggy

Tornados vs. Richmond Deerstalkers: Drew 3-3

"May I have the results of the last matches?"...A well overdue return to form for the Tornados and it was a joy to see. Performances both individual and team had the crowd shouting "Give him a big hand!"... in fact "Ladies & gentlemen, there are still festival shirts available in the clubhouse"... just watch out for anyone who says "Here, have a sugarspider..." Don't blame me... blame the Dutch! (MJ)

Team: Lee Tearle(GK), MJ, Roland Ferneaux, Charlie Krasun, James Perrott, Dougal Davis, Will Lucas, Aidan Brock, Chris Coleman, Arthur Mitchell, Dan Hopkins, Tom Alexander & Nick Jones.

Next match: Richmond Stags, 02-Dec Away

Diamonds vs. Spencer 6s: Lost 1-5

Our short corner routines looked dangerous, and Andrew scored off one of them to notch up his first for the Diamonds. We came very close with another just before half time, which saw us go in 1-2 down and on the ascendancy. However, we had looked vulnerable to attacks straight down the middle, and, whilst we had our fair share of possession in the second half, Spencer knew what to do to make theirs count.

For the first time this season, we are sitting at the bottom of the League table. So, back to the drawing board. (BD)

Team: Paul Reid, Tom Illingworth, Billy Dowie, Stuart Craig, Oliver Walton, Angus Barnard, Stephen Higgs, Seamus Betts, Warren Holme, Simon Canter, Conor Bond, Andrew McConchie

Next game: Saturday 2nd December, Spencer 5s, Home at JAGS, 12.30

Royals vs. No Opposition: Won 10 - 0

We won and I was brilliant. Although the team did exhibit a tendency towards injury and a devastating lack of pace. (CR)

Scorers: Me 10

Next game: 2 Dec Home vs. PHC Chiswick 4s

Womens 1s vs. Surbiton: Won 2-0

Looking at the result you'd think it was a fairly comfortable win for us, but that couldn't be further from the truth. We knew that Surbiton had a fairly young, energetic and skilful side and have had some high scoring wins since being promoted last year so our aim was just to score more than they did. And how they didn't score is a mystery, although the outstanding Pipes had quite a lot to do with it, especially in the first 15 minutes when the holes in our defence were somewhat bigger than the Grand Canyon. After some hair-raising, heart-stopping moments we decided to play like a team deserving to be 2nd in the league and fought back. And against the run of play, Jen waltzed into the circle to oh-so-easily- hit the ball into the bottom right corner. I think a few Surbiton heads went down and suddenly we had the upper hand.

Second half and we started just as brightly, creating beautiful moves and lots of space, with one such delightful play working its way down the right to Lou, who swept the ball majestically into the goal. It couldn't continue and Surbiton, with the bit between their teeth, set about ruining our day. Still how they didn't score will remain a mystery, but at least the defence actually had something to do with stopping them in the second half and not just Pipes. Great result to end the first half of the season.

Team: Pipes, Alex C, Kath, Clare, Nicky, Jen, Lisa, Gem, Faye, EJ, Lou & Martha

Scorers: Jen & Lou

Motm: Without a doubt (in fact, we didn't even need to vote): Pipes

Next Match: In January!!!!

Womens 2s vs. Wimbledon: Lost 3-2

Not one of our best team games it has to be said. The start was not great, our defence fell down and Wimbledon scored an early good goal. There followed a few hairy moments in the D, where I think everyone was screaming at each other to mark a player and not actually marking anyone themselves……………anyways!!!!

The last 20 mins of the first half were good, some strong play down the right especially from Zoë up front who was weaving her way into the D. Some good transfer of the ball across the pitch. Things were looking up.

Half time came and we had some very wise words from Gordon, mainly make good use of Rosie, keep ball speed up and pass the ball!!!!

Well we did 1 out of the 3, we made great use of Rosie and she had an excellent 2nd half. The other 2, in short we did not do at all. We promise to think and listen more next time to Gordon.

We were so close to getting a draw as Penny and Zoë scored some great goals but frustration and passion got the better of us as it just fell apart in the 2nd half. Wimbledon took this to their advantage and scored their winning goal. Sorry to the new players Claire H and Sarah we really are usually a lovely team, we all just got a bit too frustrated this time.

We will get them next time girls. (LM)

Team: Kato Selway, Lucy Muldoon, Sarah Buxton, Hannah Cooke, Biba Tunnicliffe, Zoe Handforth, Rosie Carter, Emma Ward, Claire Houslop, Penny Stephens, George Sykes

Umpire: Bill Dowie - BIG THANK YOU

Next game: 11am DC vs Croydon ladies 1’s

Womens 3s vs. Thames Valley 1s: Won 1 – 0

The Longest Journey to Mitcham…..Ever

After an hour and a half driving amidst Saturday’s monsoon, we arrived just down the road in Mitcham, only with another thirty miles to go until our final destination in Chertsey. As we drove through the cast-iron gates and onto the gravel drive of a Surrey-esque mansion, it was clear that Mo had printed the wrong directions from multi-map yet again.

Injured footWith only the bare eleven (some still limping) and leaning ever-so-slightly on the precautious side, the team - ankle-injury or not - indulged in some pre-match, professional ankle taping, courtesy of some sticky back band aid and our own team nurse Jen (and as modelled here by our captain).

The game itself…..shocking. The less said the better. But we won and got three points so good result.

Team: Lou Curry (C), Dulci Davies, Kate Vicary, Rachael Biggs, Stacey Sellman, Jen Watson, Emma Parker, George Hills, Sophie Carter, Mogul O’Brien from the Shire, Lucy Gaskin.

PoM: Sophie Carter (and George Hills who, in a position of power, insisted on stealing half the glory)

Umpire: Mark Annear

Next Match: Saturday 2 December v. Barnes Hounslow Ealing 4s (Home)

Womens 4s vs. Woking: Won 2-1

Rain, rain...it looked like the exposed pitch at windy Woking was not going to fit for play at first. Start time came and went, and the pitch drainage system did not seem to be up to the job. However – the game had to happen – there was no way we were going to drive that far, get soaking wet and not play. And it did! It wasn’t very pretty, it was really cold, and half the team were suffering rather from over excitements on Friday night (Anna gets the biggest fine though for being late, not picking up her team members and then having to be driven to Woking by Dunc due to potential over the limit-ness). Woking were young and fast – and scored first. We then managed the unthinkable, and after numerous short corners managed to get a hilariously slow strike to dribble into the goal. Spirits raised, a draw! Then Jena stormed into the D and shot one of the best goals of the season. Marvellous – we fought back and WON!

Team: Olivia Salau, Anna Stuttard, Selina Leleu, Lindsey Maclaren, Lucy Snell, Suzy Medcalf, Ash MacDonald, Lynne Ruddick, Jena Kitley, Claire Whitehead, Penny Ganser, Marie Smith.

Goals: Claire Whitehead, Jena Kitley

MOTM: Jena Kitley

Spectators: Lots! (amazingly, given the weather)

Womens Team 5 vs Cheam 3s: Lost 1-0

It rained and poured both on the pitch and in our hearts as Team 5 lost yet again and also bore the news that our beloved captain is going to be leaving us.

As we continue to struggle this season it was great to have the support of Ferret (on her crutches) and Coach Peter (wearing jeans!!), who both braved the wet and gloomy weather to watch us play on Saturday. We tried hard to implement their suggestions and even attempted to give the ‘w’ formation a go but there are sadly still no more points to be added against our name on the fixtures table.

Here’s hoping that next Saturday will be the match that enables Team 5 to get back on their feet.

Team: Sally Shephard (GK), Len Price, Bridget Morden, Andrea Beattie, Martina Van Der Leij, Helen Clarke, Helen Fermor, Rachael Fallows, Faith Geraghty, Kate Leckie, Andrea Vicari, Stephie Engeler

Umpires: Richard Meade, Vicky Wright

Next match: 2 December, 2.30pm playing Barnes Hounslow Ealing 6’s

Womens 6s vs. Richmond 5s: Lost 2 -1

This match threatened to be a total wash out: only 7 players confirmed by Wednesday, monsoon style rain, but clouds kindly parted by Noon among whispers of "are we really going to play in this rain???"

Opposite of last week, we were plus the goalie, minus the hangover so TDH set off from push back to get the early lead. Following a good period of early pressure and some great team work we got an early goal thanks to Vicky on the left hand post. Keeping the pressure on Alana created some great chances on goal, which definitely contributed to her man of the match vote.

Alas with failing limbs and losing our concentration in the last 10 minutes, Richmond pulled 2 goals back.

We certainly weren't playing OAPs this week. Despite the loss, we put in a great performance.

Everyone played like a team and our W formation (yes it really

works!) was put to good you on every hit out. Also big thanks to Lex and Hannah who played with us for the first time! And Michelle who played her last match, she will be hugely missed. (MG)

Team: Alanna McIntosh, Katie Stone, Mae Lynne McDougall, Karen Logan, Jo Hillier, Vicky Wright, Michelle Morgan, Lexi Price, Shona Chambers, Charlotte, Karen Logan.

Umpire: Bridget Morley

MOTM: Alanna McIntosh

Next Match: Saturday 2nd December v Kenly @ 11.30 Away

Dragons vs. Real Battersea: Lost 6-9

Y'know it does happen now and again! We lost... so Christmas is cancelled. The team will dwell on this for the whole festive period and it is likely to disrupt many plans for celebrations. Its as though the world is slightly out of tilt... things just aren't right... maybe even Russell Brand is funny... still as long as we can read in the papers about minor z-list celebrities fighting over who gets to eat insects while two dwarves from Biker Grove prattle on about what good mates they are, there's a chance things may get back to normal.

So the party season has begun... the mixed team kick off in style at the Sun in Clapham followed by a trip to the Artesian Well on 16-Dec from 7pm. All welcome, whether you've played or not (ever)!

Team: Will Pigden (GK), MJ, JC, Si Riley, Aidan Brock, Will Nurse, Ed Marland, Gemma Baker, Hannah Cooke, Lisa Cox, Linds McLaren & Lou Curry.

Scorer(s): Gemma (2), Aido (2), Lisa & Will.

Umpire: Mark Annear.

Next Game: 7 Jan vs London Edwardians @ Battersea Park

Upcoming Events...

Race Night

Race Night - Saturday 10-Feb-07

8 blisteringly exciting horse races await you on the evening of Feb 10th when THDHC hosts its own Race Night. With a big screen, and professional compere to guide you through the evening, the only thing you'll have to concentrate on is making sure you pick the winning horse. The evening is open to all members, friends and family, so keep the night free and come down for a spot of racing....

The first race will start at 7pm, with the final 'Auction Race' held at about 9.30pm. Race cards will be sold in advance and will cost £2 each (these will also act as admission tickets) and a prize will be awarded to the team that sells the most Race Cards. These will go on sale after Xmas.

But why not become an 'Owner' and have your own horse in one of the races?? Owning a horse will cost £5 - you get to give it a name and if your four legged friend comes home first you'll get a prize.

If you are interested in being an Owner, please let your captain know or email womens1s@thehockeyclub.co.uk

Ultimately, this is a fundraising event for the club, so the more people we can get at race night, the more money there is to be won on the races and the more money we can generate for THD. So put the 10th February in your diaries!!!
