Newsletter 2006/07

Since 2003/04 the club has produced weekly match reports. From the start of the 2005/06 season this became a weekly newsletter, distributed during the season, containing match reports from each of the games played that weekend as well as other key information and a selection of adverts and offers.

The Tribune

Fri 08-Dec-06

Issue 11

The warmest and stormiest December in London brings an on the whole unremarkable series of results this week, but at least proving that THD are capable of doing what England failed to do in Adelaide – if all else fails, at least manage a draw. A disproportionate number of teams ended up with a parity of goals, but I suppose one point is better than none, the men’s and women’s 2s even having almost identical games – leading 3 – 0 at half time, a draw by the end… spooky.

Team of the week is highlighted at the top, superstars that the women’s 3s were being the only team to win (apart from Chris R’s fantasy 11, who have also done rather well in the last two weeks), and in spectacular fashion too.

Most important diary date of the year, nay the century, is the weekend of 27 – 29 April 07 where we will be celebrating the club’s centenary in magnificent style with a dinner in the beautiful surroundings of Beauberry House in Dulwich on Friday 27 April, followed by a weekend of invitation games, barbecues and celebratory cheer. Please, please put the date in your diaries and more details will be coming your way very soon – and of course pass on to any old members who might have fallen out of our communications radar.

Last training sessions:

bullet Men: 12-Dec, to resume again on the 09-Jan-07.

bullet Women: 06/07-Dec, to resume again on the 03/04-Jan-7.

Women’s 3s vs. Barnes Hounslow Ealing 4s: Won 4–0

Victory, Victory, Victory! We came, we saw, we conquered. It was our most convincing performance to date and despite some shoulder rubbing, elbow pushing and, in some cases, actual body wrapping by the opposition, nothing was getting in our way. Four impressive goals (the order of events escapes me), and easily could have been four more if the last twenty minutes of the game had not been forfeited due to unfortunate circumstances in the ‘D’. Just as we were about to secure a 5 - 0 lead from a powerful short corner strike, one of the opposition’s lips obstructed its path, not only stopping the ball from finding the back of the net but also resulting in pandemonium on the pitch (with cries of ‘Ambulance!!’ and ‘Water!!’) and eventual suspension of the match in our favour. Although ending with a scene which wouldn’t have looked out of place in the first 10 minutes of a Casualty episode (well, nearly), we could rest assured that we had fought hard, stood our ground and fully deserved those three points (it must have been those half-time oranges). Same again next week please (bar the injuries) for the Grand Finale before the Christmas break. (EP)

Men’s 1s vs. Maidstone: Lost 5-4

It was one of those games when you go two goals down before you wake up. This was all a bit too real for the South African Rally champion as he arrived fresh (well, kind of) from Wales a little bit on the late side. TH&D were slow off the grid and needed to let two go past before we got a bit of a kickstart. Once the engine was running, we began working through the gears and the pace picked up. Our handling of corners has not been the best so far this season, but with some new wheels we found a bit more composure and control. Gaz-and-Gaz managed to net one each – both from variations. Unfortunately we gave back a bit of the ground we regained as we were duped by another soft overtaking manoeuvre.

Just one second behind after stage 1, we were buoyed by the way we were playing. It looked like the 1s were getting back on track. Some encouraging driving followed, but a lapse in concentration let their man in for a neat deflection and steal some more time. A few moments later coming out at a corner, the normally reliable safety stop appeared distracted – perhaps the sun glinting off a windscreen or an illegally curved stick – and the ball found our net again. Now three seconds behind we started attacking with a lot more purpose. This resulted in some good opportunities to claw back vital time at corners. ‘Wheels’ Nurse stepped into driving seat and banged in two good flicks to put us right on Maidstone’s tail. Only one second back, we began swerving all over the place and filling their rear view mirror. Unfortunately we were eating up the miles and soon we were into the home straight. With no more corners to take advantage of and some good defensive driving from the front runners, we missed out on a share of the podium by a mere second – and not for the first time this season. So close again, but a good showing against a good car…

Team: Duncan, Will, Smudge, Tom, Banners, Andy, Gary, Bungle, Gaz, Jimmy, Rob, James, Climax, Bubs

MOM: ‘Wheels’ Nurse

TFC: Sarel ‘Rob’ van der Merwe

Scorers: Will x 2, Gary, Gaz

Next game: 9 December vs Banbury away

Men’s 2s vs. Surbiton 3s: Drew 3–3

A tale of two halves

1st half - TH were sprightly, energetic and played some great free flowing hockey

This was typified by 3 fantastic goals

1. Started as Coleman picked up an aerial at the back and played it up through Killen. Casement and Jacobs worked well upfront before Potty swept in goal passed helpless Surbiton goalkeeper

2. Jacobs and Casement again in the thick of the action, taking advantage of mistake at the back - Jacobs slotted home

3. Nurse drag flick at short corner (he will say in the top left hand corner at 90 mph)- this was won after good work by Laurent and Vicary

2nd half - niggly, heated second half - TH lost their cool and failed to string any good moves together + could not keep possession, the complete opposite of the first half Surbiton deservedly scored 3 goals unopposed and could have won it.

Evening highlights

1. Will Pigeon pulling dressed as Christmas Borat, resulting in a yell of 'Hey high five' .

2. John Nurse dressed as captain Hook, he was firstly seen using the hook to get under a girls dress and then use it to drag some poor unsuspecting girl across to him. Shouts of 'he's behind you proved to no avail! - poor thing. The Hook has had to be taken away for forensic examination .

3. Chris Coleman meeting the bird in the Zutons (AB)

Scorers: Potty, Jacobs, Nursey

Team: Sir Sh*tsalot, Chris C, Dave C, Ed M, Hoff, Cap’in Hook, Mike K, Nick J, Potty, Christmas Borat, James V, Laurent

MOM: The girl who pulled Borat

Next Match: 9 December, St. Albans (H) DC 12.30

Men's 3s vs. Spencer 4s: 1-1

Well. Another draw. But this time one we won't be ashamed with. Spencer have only dropped points in a loss to Southgate so we were stupidly nervous about this one. We needn't have been. A quality first half with 3 or 4 good chances for us including a good drag flick from Timmy but no goals. It took a broken down short corner in the 2nd half from Ben lofted in from the bye line to put us ahead. 1-0 up at half time we pressed in the 2nd half and unfortunately weren't rewarded unfortunately conceding a sloppy goal off a short.

All in all a point which was our minimum to take away from this but somewhat frustrated we didn't take the points and turn over a good team.

We need 1 win from the next 2 to keep on track for play offs. (WC)

Tornados vs. Richmond Stags: Drew 1-1

It seems that in recent weeks the usual squad has been replaced by Tony Hart, Neil Buchannon & Rolf Harris as all we can do is draw. Perhaps its time to add a bath, curtains & conclusions to the team. (MJ)

Team: Alex Timmer (GK), MJ, Roland Ferneaux, Charlie Krasun, James Perrott, Dougal Davis, Will Lucas, Aidan Brock, Alex Fishwick, Si Riley, Arthur Mitchell, Dan Hopkins, Tom Alexander & Nick Jones.

Next match: 09 December vs Chiswick Men's 3s 11:00 DC

Diamonds vs. Spencer 5s. Drew 1-1

The previous week, we had lost 1-5 to Spencer 6s, just above us in the table. Now we were up against their bigger brothers, third in the league and fresh off a win at the leaders, Old Loughts. Right from the start we had them on the back foot, wondering when their onslaught would begin; it never did. The sides were evenly matched throughout, with a draw a fair result.

Andrew put away a short corner for the second week running – just as well, since open play goals are rare these days. Conor gave us all heart with his determination not to be pushed off the ball, and his schoolmate Krishna (standing in to make up the numbers) impressed us all. Simon also deserves a mention for his tireless chasing back – very well received in defence. Overall, a fine performance, and we’re all hopeful that we can keep this up.(BD)

Team: Paul Reid, Tom Illingworth, Billy Dowie, Stuart Craig, Andrew McConchie, Stephen Higgs, Seamus Betts, Oliver Walton, Simon Canter, Conor Bond, Bob Morris, Krishna

Scorer: Andrew McConchie

Umpire: Wes Cole

Next game: Saturday 9th December, St Albans 5s, Away at 1.30

Royals vs. Germany: Won 3 – 1 (Seoul Hockey Stadium)

"And where were the Germans, but frankly who cares?" (Sorry B)

Proving once and for all that the Royals are the best team in the world ever by winning the Olympic Gold for England. (CR)

Team: Gavin Lawson, Ian Taylor, Keith/Ken Howick, David Faulkener, Stephen Batchelor, Ed Allen, Will Pendrill, Imran Shirwani, Kim Keats, Doug Heard, Russel Garcia, Tim Smith, Chris Richman, Sean Kerly.

‘Tis the season to be jolly:

We definitely should have been after an amazing 1st half with outstanding play from the whole team, perfect passes, precise decision making, using the whole pitch, text book move from Oz and goals from Kate and Penny.

Decked with holly:

(the wise words from Captains and Coach) we demonstrated how truly magical hockey can be.

‘Tis also the season to be giving.

We gave it all we had and sometimes too much crowding our own space and gave the oppo their Christmas gift. Credit where credit is due – they upped their game and to our disbelief we drew! The momentum moved from end to end but mainly down the right… With another tough match under our belts and lots to take away - remember the most important thing when we are good we are hot! Bring on the Spencer lot. (SB)

Ladies 4’s vs. Wayfarers: Lost 3-1

On paper an afternoon slot at DC seemed like a good idea but in reality we were all a bit foxed. Lost without an early jaunt to Surrey, we suddenly found ourselves 1-0 down to a well aimed chest-butt that went unnoticed by our umpires – grrr. Time for the THD contingent to wake up. They were tough and feisty and I didn’t see many “Wayfs” on the pitch as they insisted on shouting. They were really hard to defend and at times it felt like there were 100s of em. Lynne, making her debut in defence, was clearing the ball well with Nikki and Lucy also battling hard but alas another one slipped past us – a neat little touch past the keeper. 2-0 down and we entered into our 10 minutes of skill – passing well – working the ball out to the wings – Kate making some great runs down the right and eventually won a short. It wasn’t text book and the goalmouth scramble ended in their favour – so much so they ran up the other side of the pitch and popped in another. 3-0 at half time.

We had a word with ourselves and started the 2nd half with a bit more gusto. Fighting hard – Jena, Is, Ash and Mary all battled away. We won a few more shorts and eventually Jena converted Claire’s strike and gave us something to cheer about 3-1. They again charged the pond-end and thought they scored but as Selina reminded them – they had to be in the D for it to count! The match continued mainly with us attacking but to no avail. Great balls (of fire) were flying in but we just couldn’t get on the end of them. 3-1 is remained. Next week Leatherhead – top of the league – it’s going to be tough. (LM)

Team: Dulcie/Olivia, Nikki Smithies, Lindsey McLaren, Lucy Snell, Lynne Ruddock, Is Drewe-Thompson, Suzy Medcalf, Mary Cook, Emma Billsdon, Claire Whitehead, Jena Kitley, Ash Maccie-Ds and Kate Lievesley

Scorer: Jena Kitley

Umpires: Steve Powell and Selina Leleu.

Man of the match: Kate

Next game: Saturday 9th away vs Leatherhead

Women’s Team 5 vs. Barnes Hounslow Ealing 6’s: Lost 3-0

Am not sure that anyone wants to read another depressing match report for Team 5. It has been a dismal first half of the season but reassuringly Team 5 has not lost their spirit, as was proven off the pitch at our Christmas lunch on Sunday. Martina bravely offered to host the party and proved that being a domestic goddess was yet another one of her many qualifications. It started off as a classy affair with home made pate, roast lamb and a desert buffet. The speeches followed, with a sad farewell to Bridget, our captain who will be moving out of London after Christmas and then a ceremonious handing over of the captain’s armband to Rachael. Faith agreed to continue on as vice-captain and will now be joined by Helen Clarkee. The final toasting was obviously to better times ahead for Team 5 and then with the official duties over, the afternoon rapidly began to deteriorate with the table pushed aside, revolving disco floor set up and DJ Van der Leij on the decks. Perhaps not the best idea for a Sunday night as evident by the number of Team 5 players who either didn’t make it into work on Monday, made it into work and then had to go home or slept in and only got in to work at lunchtime.

Team: Sally Shephard (GK), Fatima Dorima, Bridget Morden, Jean Sutton, Andrea Beattie, Martina Van Der Leij, Helen Clarkee, Helen Fermor, Rachael Fallows, Faith Geraghty, Kate Leckie, Andrea Vicari, Stephie Engeler,

Next match: 20th January 1.30pm, playing Richmond 4’s at Dulwich College

Women’s 6s vs. Kenley: Lost 3-0

Aside from the score, it was a pretty good match. We started with a pretty macho warm up - trekking 3 miles (give or take) up a steep hill to the pitch, followed by some serious goal manoeuvring - excellent teamwork before the match even started. During the match there was some great play from the defence - most importantly of all: several sterling saves from GK Charlotte. Some dazzling runs from Gigi on the Right Wing gave the game a certain je ne sais quoi. Some expert play was delicately sandwiched between that genius concept that has been developed by the 6's- ‘passing the ball to no one’ ™. A goal for us would have been deserved - especially after all that hard work with the short corners - but, as they say, c'est la vie. Perhaps the thought of the champagne awaiting us (kindly offered by Ferrett) was our Achilles' heel at the end of the day. Bring on 2007 though - we're ready... (LP)

Woman of the match: Charlotte - (nominated by me on behalf of the team!)

Team: Kate (C), Katie, Alanna, Gigi, Karen, Clare, Jess, Lucy, Mae, Isla, Shona, Emma, Mags, Lexi and GK – Charlotte

Next game: 13th Jan, at JAGS v Berrylands

Race Night

Race Night - Saturday 10-Feb-07

8 blisteringly exciting horse races await you on the evening of Feb 10th when THDHC hosts its own Race Night. With a big screen, and professional compere to guide you through the evening, the only thing you'll have to concentrate on is making sure you pick the winning horse. The evening is open to all members, friends and family, so keep the night free and come down for a spot of racing....

The first race will start at 7pm, with the final 'Auction Race' held at about 9.30pm. Race cards will be sold in advance and will cost £2 each (these will also act as admission tickets) and a prize will be awarded to the team that sells the most Race Cards. These will go on sale after Xmas.

But why not become an 'Owner' and have your own horse in one of the races?? Owning a horse will cost £5 - you get to give it a name and if your four legged friend comes home first you'll get a prize.

If you are interested in being an Owner, please let your captain know or email womens1s@thehockeyclub.co.uk

Ultimately, this is a fundraising event for the club, so the more people we can get at race night, the more money there is to be won on the races and the more money we can generate for THD. So put the 10th February in your diaries!!!
