Issue 07
“…We shall never surrender.” What a remarkable
weekend - Winston would have been proud. 47 goals - blimey. With hat
trick heroes a-plenty, THD were on blinding form this weekend, special
mention to the Women’s 5s and 6s who seemed the most surprised
by their wins, the Men’s 2s for finally winning in the league
and Tornados for rediscovering what it is to be victorious. The Men’s
1s and Women’s 1 continue their winning streaks. All in all,
it’s a hearty pat on the back all round. And thanks to the Women’s
3s opposition for gifting us 3 points and saving them the bother of
playing. More goals for the immense tally. Read on for tales of victory
and deserved self-congratulation.

Women’s 1s v Woking 1a: Won 2-0
We were back up near the top of the table where we belonged, we had
a squad of 14 and there were no injuries or illnesses to speak of,
so things were looking good for the 1s. And we started well, finding
lots of space to pass the ball around and making if difficult for
the oppo’s defence to get the ball out. But Woking were strong
at the back - we had lots of possession but were unable to find the
goal and, despite some dubious umpiring (there were many apologies
between the 2 captains when the other side was deprived a blatant
free hit) we persevered for the goal….which came when B latched
on to a great quickly-taken free hit from EJ to put us one up. Woking’s
keeper had a great game and made some great saves to deny us of more
goals…plus Alex had about 5 chances to bury the ball on a short
corner, only to be deprived by the post on the last attempt. But two
minutes into the second half we had doubled our lead. I’m not
sure what was in Sarah’s water at half time, but she burst onto
a pass from Faye and slotted the ball past the keeper for a great
finish. The defence stayed strong at the back and we kept our first
clean sheet of the season…special mention to Jen who had a blinder.
Up front we had a few more chances, but we couldn’t add to our
tally, but happy to walk away at the final whistle with 3 points and
the win. (GB)

Next Match: Sunday 11th v Beaminster (trophy)
Trophy: Women’s 1s v Beaminster 1s: Won 8-0
Beaminster were semi-finalists last season, so this was potentially
going to be a tricky match so early in the competition. But it was
apparent that they had lost a few players since last year and were
fielding quite a few juniors, so the scoreline wasn’t too much
of a surprise. Plus it could have been quite a few more….Sharon
could have scored quite a few corkers, only to get on the score sheet
with a goal that couldn’t have moved any slower over the line.
Martha, too, had quite a few chances but it wasn’t really her
day…..until she converted a Martha-special short corner for
goal number 7. Lou got a hat trick, much to Alex’s annoyance,
Sarah continued her goal scoring streak with another strike from the
top, Gemma added to the tally and Rachel made it 8…..slight
consolation after getting a ball in the nose (but she bravely carried
on once the bleeding had stopped). Pipes didn’t really have
much to do, although we did allow Beaminster a couple of breaks against
us, just to make sure she was still awake. So, Round 3 here we come…..another
home game on November 25th against Chichester (all support welcomed!)

Women’s 2s vs. Old Cranleighans: Drew 1–1
After a frustrating draw the previous week, THD women’s 2s
were keen for a victory, despite our 8:30am meet at Dulwich College.
After a timely arrival and good warm up, the match started at a high
pace and we looked set for a competitive match. OC’s deep defending
enabled us to play relatively high up the pitch and we enjoyed a lot
of possession in the opposition’s half, with Jo Walford’s
pace causing the defence many problems. However, it proved difficult
to penetrate their D and to create real scoring opportunities. Despite
creating several chances, we went into half time feeling we should
have been in a better position than 0-0.
OC’s came out strongly at the beginning of the second half
but after 15 minutes a slick move up the pitch at pace by THD culminated
in Emma calmly slotting the ball home at the left post, set up by
a great ball from Sarah P. OC’s came back strong and hungry
and, despite THD successfully defending a short corner, managed to
slot the ball in at the near post. We allowed our heads to drop in
the last 15 minutes and OC almost capitalised again; some fantastic
saves from Dulcie kept us at 1-1 which, although we were disappointed,
on reflection was probably quite a fair result for both teams in a
closely fought game. (RT)

T5s vs. Shirley Phoenix 2s: Won 4-0
As Charlotte anticipated last week, it finally happened: our 1 st
win! with a fantastic 4 - 0 and great team work. But something weird
happened: I was voted Player of the Game!! (shared with Del, scorer
of 3 goals, who certainly deserved the votes). This made me responsible
for this report… difficult task when English is not my 1 st
language. The good side of it is that my lovely T5 mates agreed that
I should do it in my own language! Spanish would look good, we all
thought…
So, here is what happened: Estabamos preparadas para enfrentarnos
a futbol".
Thank you Ferrett for your support in this game! (FD)

Women’s 6s vs Camberley & Farnborough 3s: Won 8-0
No, your eyes do not deceive you. Accustomed as we are to being on
the other end of this sort of scoreline, I’m finding it quite
hard to remember what went on…
There was a goal. Then there was another one. And a few more. We
were 5-0 up at half time. They received a reinforcement. We scored
3 more. That’s it, in a nutshell.
Clearly we need supporters every match as since we gained an audience,
the scorelines have improved dramatically. Will and Gemma provided
sterling coaching from the sidelines and whole team took the chance
to put what we have been practicing at training to good use –
playing with width, drawing their defence, looking before passing
and so on.
There was some beautiful interplay between the mids and the forwards
as we swooped on their D time and again. Our press was working pretty
well and we kept the ball in their half for most of the match. Honorable
mention to the defence for not nodding off, covering their breaks
and keeping a clean sheet for the second week in a row (although perhaps
going forward we should remember we are playing hockey and not lacrosse!).
Oh and in case anyone catches Lex in the clubhouse, she avoided her
obligatory hat-trick snakebite with the “I’m driving”
excuse, so feel free to enforce one on her – it’s one
per hat-trick and one for every goal after that… (KS)

Men’s 1s vs. Bexley & Belvedere Hockey Club: Won 7–2
The tenth of November, a significant date in world history, I hear
you cry. No? Then read on…
10 November 1775: US Marine Corp founded in America.
10 November 1928: Hirohito crowned Emperor of Japan.
10 November 1938: Kristallnacht in Germany.
10 November 1988: George Bush elected US President.
But it’s not all bad…
10 November 1910: Elgar conducts the first performance of his violin
concerto in the Queen’s Hall, London.
10 November 1958: Donald Campbell breaks the water speed record of
248mph.
10 November 1989: Bulldozers begin demolishing the Berlin Wall. Legitimately.
10 November 2007: And so to the hockey… THD 7 – 2 BBHC.
In a game notable for many things, the following stand out (ie, I
can remember them): Will Nurse’s hat trick; Andy Balchin scoring
with a reverse stick strike (well, sweep); and Tulse Hill converting
a penalty stroke – well done Arthur! Special mention should
also go to the BBHC short corner routine and Piggy, who combined admirably
to ensure a near 1:1, shot to goal ratio. (MWP)

Men’s 2s vs. East Grinstead: Won 5-2
The men’s 2s approached this game as was right for a team in
our position. Put another way, we were each betting on how big a margin
we would lose by. Not that we didn’t have faith in each other,
but seriously, one point from fifteen. Next up to boost our confidence
was the fact that we had 9 people doing the warm up. "Have no
fear" says Jacobs, "I have a plan!!". Brilliant, we
have a team that can’t win, but at least we have two random
spare guys Jacob's know's coming along to save our game, oh, and no
left back. However the story was soon to change. Sam played left back,
and did it extremely well including a bit of football we hope the
Israelis can reproduce, to set up one of our goals. In truth, this
was a very good performance by the 2s, helped by Bino's tireless work
up front, including an exquisite final goal amongst his hat trick.
The first goal was a short corner, Bino striking it somewhere near
the middle of the goal, and the keeper logging past it. From then
in, there was only one result. We broke apart their defence time and
again, and should have scored more. Their goals by contrast, were
so lazily defended it seemed our defence were bored, and thought them
having 2 goals would make the scoreline more interesting. Whatever
the reason, the game finished 5-2, with goals from Bino (3), Fez,
and Jacobs (although no one remembers him scoring it - i dont think
he did to be honest), and it was a thoroughly deserved victory for
TH&D after so many times losing in the last ten mins. A good result,
and now the season can begin, lets hope for more wins, and a final
push up the table in search of mid table mediocrity!! ™

Next match: Away vs London Wayfarers (3pm Crystal

Men's 3s vs. Oxford Uni 3’s: Won 2-0
Let’s start at the beginning. Wes is an idiot, and forgot that
when you want the Men’s 3s to turn up at 12:30 you tell them
to be there at 11:30 in order for them all to arrive on time. As a
result, pretty much everyone was late and we were lucky to start the
game with a full squad. Despite this, we started quite strongly, and
spent much of the opening 15 in the opposition’s half –
just as impressively, we managed to stay at full strength when 4 minutes
in, Lyness did his best to get sent off and threw his toys, a wobbly,
but most importantly his stick when a decision didn’t go his
way.
Sustained pressure from the midfield and forwards and solid defending
at the back meant that we kept a hold of the ball for long spells,
frustrating the oppo, and had a fair few chances. However, it took
until the last few minutes of the half for Harrow to find the net
with a lovely short corner drag-flick. I taught him everything he
knows.
The second half was more of the same, except with less control and
considerably less discipline – mostly from the boys in Navy
Blue it must be said, frustrated at their inability to puncture our
defence. One character in particular, who had already struck a ball
at John after the whistle decided to finish the job and kneed him
in the head. Long story short – his own team wouldn’t
let him back on the pitch and John got 7 stitches. Harrow came pants-wettingly
close with another flick coming off the upright and flying across
the face of goal, before making it 2-0 with a shot on the turn –
and we were unlucky a couple of times towards the end not to make
it more convincing.
Not our cleanest win but 3 points nevertheless. Special mentions
to Jez for our first clean sheet of the season, Tim Jones for an awesome
performance overall, and Hat-trick-avoidance Harrow. (TS)

Men’s 4s vs Richmond Deerstalkers: Won 0-2
Old age and treachery will always overcome youth and inexperience.
Just ask the 12 year old Richmond half-back The Judge decided to knock
into the middle of next week. We'd shipped 17 goals in the previous
4 games, so a switch of formation marked a return to the rampaging
side of old.
Penalty Corner Lesson 1.01
1) Soften the opposition up - launch a rocket via a deflection into
the ribcage of their right-back. That'll slow down those runners.
2) Push out. Perfect stop and roll into the D
3) Enter stage left the Fat Slapper
4) Exit centre stage the ball
5) Job done
An own goal from their centre-back in the second half ensured the
3 points headed back East along the South Circular. There followed
the start of this season's fines... an hour later the kitty stood
at £130 and the post-season trip to Brighton has its first hour's
beer sorted. (SR)

Diamonds vs. Old Loughtonians Gunners: Lost 2-4
OK, we lost to the Division leaders. Deserved the loss, but played
pretty well, all told.
The truth is that they are an unexceptional team with one bonus feature
– a centre half who should be playing for their first team,
and probably any first team in the country, if not the flipping country
itself. I kid you not. Whatever his reasons, he has chosen to play
permanently with this team. When the match was “safe”
(early on) he passed the ball; but once we went one up (after which
it was never safe for them), so we were subjected to wave after wave
of one-man dribbling forays from the halfway line that needed two,
three or even four of us to cope with..... leaving the other OLs players
unmarked to pick up the loose balls. It is ridiculous for us to get
upset at our missed tackles – he was virtually untacklable,
and he was too fast and strong to be fouled "quietly" in
such a way that the perpetrator would have remained on the field.
We're now back down to fourth place after six games, two points behind
the second-placed team. Our remaining three games before Xmas are
against the three bottom sides. (BD)

Hockey is important but not as important as learning... this week
we learn about the Wankel rotary engine.
The Wankel rotary engine is a type of internal combustion engine,
invented by German engineer Felix Wankel, which uses a rotor instead
of reciprocating pistons. This design delivers smooth high-rpm power
from a compact, lightweight engine.
In 1951, Wankel began development of the engine at NSU (NSU Motorenwerke
AG), where he first conceived his rotary engine in 1954 (DKM 54, Drehkolbenmotor)
and later the KKM 57 (the Wankel rotary engine, Kreiskolbenmotor)
in 1957. The first working prototype DKM 54 was running on February
1, 1957 at the NSU research and development department Versuchsabteilung
TX.
Considerable effort went into designing rotary engines in the 1950s
and 1960s. They were of particular interest because they were smooth
and very quiet running, and because of the reliability resulting from
their simplicity. (MJ)
