This issue of the Tribune contains a mixed bag of articles. We have news of the Womens 6s final game of the season, which resulted in two goals and a clean sheet! A great finish, and there were celebrations at The Clarence in Balham after. The Dragons visited Spencer Hockey Club for a 7-a-side tournament on grass
In the only competitive fixture remaining, the Dragons lost to Phoenix in the HA Mixed Trophy. Congratulations to them for making it to the quarter-finals this! But the action does not end there. A friendly match against West Hampstead Mixed was organised for 12 May 2009.
As you can see, Mixed summer hockey will be in full swing soon. Get in touch with Mark Jones or Lindsey McLaren if you want to be part of the Dragons!

THD's Alexander shocks hockey world
Tom Alexander, current Tornados vice-captain, has announced that he will no longer make himself available for international competition.
After a twenty-year career with Tulse Hill & Dulwich Hockey Club, Tom has taken himself out of the running for future England and Great Britain selections. He will, however, continue to be committed to his club team.
"Whilst my head tells me I can continue to compete at the top level, my body is telling me it is time to let younger players take up the mantle. I believe this move will prolong my career at club level and note that the GB coaching staff have not stood in my way,” Tom told the THD website.
“I do not feel that I am missing anything. I will be able to qualify for the Vets and Supervets selections in future. The World Cup is two years away and the Olympics are four years away. It would be better if the preparations for those started now, and the [younger players] need all the experience they can get. I am happy for any of the GB players to call me for advice.”
Tributes to Tom have poured in:
“Who is this idiot?” Sean Kurley, Former GB International and Gold Medal Winner.
“He even sounds fat” Jon Potter, Former GB International and Gold Medal Winner.
“I wish I was more like him” Simon Wilshire, aging lothario and one time goal scorer.
Next month we will be featuring an article by Richard Banwell looking at making beautiful titbits with ginger. Do you want to know more about this sexy little spice and how to infuse your cuisine with it? YES CHEF!

18 April
Womens 6s vs. London Edwardians 4s: Won 2-0
A glorious day for the last game of the season, so much so we weren't really geared up for it and wanted instead to go straight to the pub for Snaky B's. However the game went ahead. The oppo were stood on the same points as us and to keep our heads high we needed to finish with a win. To cut a long and slightly tedious story short we scored 2 and they scored none - hurrah. A big thanks you to Charlotte, Lydia, Lucy and Alanna who came and joined the team.
Squad: Charlotte, Lydia, Sinead, Jess, Flo, Lucy, Mags, Sarah, Ellie, Katie, Alanna, Claire, Gigi, Hayley

18 March
Dragons @ Spencer HC Club Day
So here's the deal: sunshine, THD Dragons (fine bunch of individuals), mixed hockey, grass pitches, pitchside BBQ. There couldn't be a better recipe for spending a Saturday. We were in a group of 6 other teams; each game was 20 minutes long with no half-time. We also received food coupons and three big jugs of drink.
Match 1: 1040hrs, vs. Taff and Brums: Lost 2-3
Not everyone was ready for an early game. We went a goal up first quickly. But almost as easily they seemed to be able to cut through our defence. The game then went in a scoreless period. Everyone seemed to be coming to grips with the bounce of the grass pitch. A goal each for either team followed. The men in cricket whites and blazers scored one more in the final minute to snatch the points away.
Match 2: 1100hrs, vs. Champagne Super Rovers: Lost 5-1
Next up was the Irish-Guiness-Clover team. They were very skilful players. Amidst getting the result handed to us on a plate, we managed to sneak a goal in. It looked like the beginning of a long day.
Match 3: 1220hrs, vs. Mustafa Laff: Won 5-3
It was about time the full squad turned up. John and Mark finally arrived, and some tired legs could have a rest. John's experience provided some steady hands. Zesh was causing all sorts of trouble with his dribbling and Julia showed us the finishing that makes the top scorer of the Womens 4s this season.
Match 4: 1340hrs, vs. Happy Birthday Jobbers: Won 5-1
Jobbers was having a great birthday so far. He turned up with his 6 other female teammates. Luckily for us, they appeared to have drank their daily allowance of Snakey-B already! Taking advantage of their uncoordinated defending, we put 5 past them and spent most of the game in their half. Who ever said alcohol can't win you games?
Match 5: 1400hrs, vs. Racing Club de Polo de Clapham: Drew 5-5
This team clearly had some good individual players. They had some quick passing and had most of the early possession. An own-goal by Ram didn't help the cause. We got two goals back, they scored one, but we scored a third almost immediately after. In the end, we walked off with a well-deserved draw. Later, it was found out that this team had beaten everyone else in our group! Well done Dragons.
Match 6: 1500hrs, vs. 118 (2): No result
118 (2) left after playing their first game of the day, no doubt to run around the streets of South London saying "Got your number!" So it called an early end to our day.
Afterwards, Tom and Mark were invited to play for Spencer Supervets in a friendly game. Our final standing is as below. We finished fourth in our group, with the top 3 going to the knockout stages. So we were in the toughest group! Overall, a good time was had by all. Thanks to everyone who played and especially to Ellie for organising. (Ramana)

Sunday, 26 April; JAGS;
This was more like it. The match was actually scheduled for today - THD had a full squad, and against all the odds, Phoenix showed up! Mens 1 captain Rob and Mens 1 coach Hoppo looked sheepish as they were each turning up for the game for the second time. A beautiful warm day, a capacity crowd (Emma, Lucy) and Hoppo had agreed to coach us for the day. He started well by talking his usual guff before the game. I had to listen to him for 22 games of a long season and he really needs some new chat. Ah well. We went to warm up and he kept his arse warm by sitting in the dugout instead of taking us through a few drills.
This showed at the start and the oppo were first out of the blocks. We went down a couple, Will and Gemma discussed why and agreed that they were both right. A lovely touch and shot from Nick got us one back. Impressive work. Especially as he had spent the night before down in Westminster with his dad and the rest of the Tamil Tiger protesters. Phoenix went down the field and scored again though. Shame. Will Nurse pulled one back expertly, shouting abuse at Gemma as he ran back to position.
3-2 down at the half, we quickly let another one in. There was nothing beautiful about the game in the second half - several mistakes from both sides and a kind of ping pong movement across the pitch. But then. what's this! Superb finish by Tamil, and THD did continue to press and were rewarded when Bino won a P-flick after good work on the right from John. Will slotted it in with a drag! 4-4 and Will shouts abuse at Gemma. But then Rob tries to "mark" their attacker but stands and admires as he sticks it in the far corner. Ah well Rob, next time eh? Piggy hopelessly lets in his sixth, we lose 6-4 and sadly, a great season of mixed comes to an end.
Squad: Piggy, Tim, Rob, Will, Gemma, John, Felix, Nick, Kath, Rosie, Annabel & Rebecca.
Scorers: Will Nurse (x2), Nick Jacobs (x2).
MOM: Tim - the new Banners after his hilarious impression before the game.
TFC: John
Coach: Mark Hopkins
Summer Matches
12 May
Dragons vs. West Hampstead Mixed: Won 3-2
A lesson in why summer hockey hasn't taken off. Despite a squad of fifteen and the weather taking a turn for the worse, we were blowing out of our collective arses by the end.
We started brightly and had most of the possession for the first ten minutes without really threatening. Then, uncharacteristically, Jacobs set off on a solo run and weaved through their defences. Something funny happened and their appeared to be a pass to someone else in our team. We drove into the D; the shot came in; saved! The ball falls to Jacobs who sweeps it in off the cross bar on an impressive back stick strike. 1-0. Sweet.
We sat back a bit then and let them come on to us; their Captain, 23 (shirt, not age; unless his paper round was REALLY hard), tried to drive them on, but confused inspiration with perspiration. 13 "Helen", I believe, a player with true skill, started to give us some trouble and we were under pressure.
A good counter attack saw Harriet drive in and get a good shot away at 45 degrees. The keeper, apparently thinking he was on TV not DC, threw himself at the ball and it bounced off his chest for Duckie to sweep home in trademark style into the far top corner.
Dragons pushed on and tried to make some more chances, but the game, despite opening up, lacked some quality (changes? fitness?) and eventually Duckie had the chance to score again - 3-0.
Half Time - 3-0. Possibly slightly flattering, but the Dragons were the better side.
WH came out for the second half with protestations of sportsmanship accompanied by shameless gamesmanship. A friendly in name only? Game on! The ball breaks to the lovely 13 who, with excellent footwork, controlled the ball and swept it past the startled defenders. 3-1. Game over?
Far from it! A series of short corners reflected WH's pressure and, eventually Dragons conceded again, with MJ beaten by a slightly fortuitous shot.
Dragons held on as the WH players became increasingly upset and increasingly unable to maintain their 'friendly' veneer. The final straw for them was the Short Corner that never was, as captain 23 touched it off the line and his protestations of "I only moved it back as it moved" were ignored.
The final whistle came - the Dragons had won - and sportsmanship reasserted its cheery head. Or not - we'll find out at the July rematch!
Squad: MJ, Jacobs, Wilsh, Tom A, Phil "Billy The" Fishwick, Nick the Duck, Charlie K, Ben, Shaz, Sunny, Harriet, Mags, Bee, Snellers, Helen
Scorers: Jacobs, Duckie (2)
MOM: Hard to tell. MJ was strangely okay; Jacobs passed with some aplomb; Duckie scored two good goals; Phil, though, has to be MOTM for ignoring family tradition by being a) pissed, b) fat and c) screaming 'Fishwick!' every (quite literally, every) time something doesn't go quite to plan.
TFC: Again, a harsh gift. Probably a competition between their 58 ("the ball went out there. It's a metre back, umpire") and 13 ("No, i didn't kick it. Goal for me. Anyhow, I'm off for a breather.")
Umpires: Mark Annear
Next match: Old Cranleighans Mixed Summer League: 19-May-09 @ Thames Ditton. Get in touch with the captain if you are keen to play!
