Since 2003/04 the club has produced weekly match reports. From the start of the 2005/06 season this became a weekly newsletter, distributed during the season, containing match reports from each of the games played that weekend as well as other key information and a selection of adverts and offers.

Match Reports | A.G.M | Subs | Awards Dinner

A good week for the teams in action this week. Most of the teams picked up points, with the Mens 1s starting their new season with a win and the Womens 1s maintained their unbeaten start too.

The Saracens continued with 2 wins out of two, with a goal near the death "sealing the deal" for them. The Tornados vs Diamonds match proved to be another hotly-contested affair. The Diamonds came back from 2-0 down to settle for a draw.

The Womens 4s bounced back from a defeat in Week 1 to beat their Old Kingstonian opposition by 2-0. The Ladies 5s and 6s faced tough opposition this weekend, reflected in the large goal margins they lost by. Nevertheless this was only the second round of matches and the teams are still taking time to gel.

Lastly, there are two important dates in the club calendar coming up. First is the Annual General Meeting 19 October. It is vital that as many people attend as possible. The club accounts will be approved and there are some changes to our club's constitution that we need to vote on. If you cannot make it, please see the notice on the website and send in your voting forms by proxy to secretary@thehockeyclub.co.uk

Secondly, the Awards Dinner is on 31 October at the Rosendale. It is Black Tie and it promises to be a grand affair as always. Here we celebrate the achievements of the teams and members from last season, and it is always a good reason to have a ball. See you there!

The Annual General Meeting of Tulse Hill & Dulwich Hockey Club is to be held on Mon 19th October at 8pm in the Dulwich Sports Club Clubhouse, Burbage Road, London SE24.

This year's meeting is particularly important as there are a lot of changes that need to be approved - these changes are mainly to do with how we run the club. The way we govern the club is controlled by our memorandum and articles. There are a number of legal changes that the club has to incorporate as well as some other changes to tidy up how we work.

For the first time, those unable to attend have the option this year to vote by proxy form. Members can either appoint the chairman of the meeting or any other person they know (who will be attending) to vote as they direct on the form - please follow the instructions on the form - all queries to secretary@thehockeyclub.co.uk. Proxy forms can be submitted electronically to secretary@thehockeyclub.co.uk - if so no later than 5pm on Saturday 17th October.

In addtion to this there will be the usual business of approval of last year's accounts and election/re-election of the club's directors & officers.

Please make your vote count!!!

All the relevant documents can be downloaded from the links below...

Notice of AGM
Proxy form
Accounts for year ended 30 April 2009
New articles of association - clean
New articles of association - blacklined against the 2002 articles

The main changes are summarised below...

(a) Termination of membership (para 6.1.3) – members may be removed if they are arrears on payment of subs after 3 months (previously 6). In addition a new clause would be added to confirm that if members do not pay subs in the following season then they are deemed not to be members from that point on (6.1.5).

(b) General meetings (including AGMs) can now be called on 14 clear days notice (previously 21) due to changes brought in by the CA 2006) (para 8).

(c) Members must be entitled to appoint proxies to attend meetings (para 8.10). Going forward this will simplify the logistics for approving the accounts – which will continue to be approved at an annual general meeting. Amendments to para 9 to clarify when subsequent AGMs must be held following the accounting reference date.

(d) The directors considered that the officers of the club should be appointed before the end of the previous season as it was preferable for the new officers to be in place prior to the summer break. Therefore the requirement to appoint officers at the AGM would be removed. Instead the directors would be able if they wished to call an informal members meeting or directors meeting to which any member could be invited so as to appoint those members as the new officers. Correspondingly the ability to appoint new officers would be reserved to the directors (para 10.6 deletion and amendment to 26).

(e) Director’s removal – it was agreed that a director could be removed from office if he failed to attend 3 meetings without permission and the remainder of the board resolved that his office be terminated (para 17.3).

(f) Appointment of secretary – the directors retain the power to appoint a secretary of the Club, but this is a voluntary requirement and no longer as required by CA 2006 (para 21.1).

(g) Notices – additional language included to permit communication with members by website (paras 33 and 34). The directors noted that for these provisions to operate properly, members must confirm consent to have such communications posted on the website, and supply the Club with an appropriate email address such that communications can be made electronically. These requirements are fulfilled so far as each member completes the information form supplied to all members on Club Day.

Mens 1s vs. Chichester: Won 3-2

Apparently it is a sign of great teams that can play badly but manage to claw victory from the jaws of defeat.

With a simple game plan and the challenge set to win five matches pre-Christmas we can look back with gratitude that we were able to walk off the pitch with 3 points. Struggling to get into our stride and retain possession ensured that Chichester were very much in control for the majority of the match. Smudge scored our first equaliser after a good run and cracking shot into the roof of the net, and with five minutes to go Bino did what he does best to level the scores for a second time with a clever tap. In the final moments we then won a short corner and can hold our heads high in the clinical routine that ensured Bino was on hand again to score the winner.

A poor performance but a good result to build on for what could be a good season if we decide to play like we can. (NJ)

Squad: Piggy, Smudge, Nurse, J Goldsmith, Andy M, Matt H, Rob, Spec, Bino, Tom, Simon B, Steve B, Nick

Scorers: Chris Smith, James Huntley (2)
MOTM: Smudge

Next match: HA Cup, 4 Oct, Away vs. Reading

HA Cup, 2nd Round, 4 Oct

Mens 1s vs. Reading 1s: Lost 0-12

Well what could I say; who would have guessed that Dulwich's second round draw would be against Reading! To be honest when I was preparing for the match my predictions were rather different than the final score but it wouldn't be fair to start the report with a negative attitude.

As we sat in the changing room reading the program we took note of the standard of our opposition, as we looked even closer you could see the Dulwich and Tulse Hill logo at the top reading "Dulwich and Tulse Hill, The friendliest Club in south London".

The final score was 12-0, which was a pretty good result in my book. However, it would have been nice to score at least one goal but we needed to get into their "D" first (which never happened).

However, the result doesn't reflect game. Dulwich played their heart out in the first 10 minutes with some great saves coming from our fearless goalkeeper and some great goals from their outrageous reverse shots!

On a personal note Banners wouldn't have coped with their speed and apparently neither did Smudge as he made a late challenge in the "D" to get a yellow card. Oh yea thanks mate as if playing them with 11 men wasn't hard enough.

Now on a serious note, we can learn a lot from the game against Reading - ball pace, patience, accuracy of passes and above all they trust their teammates to do the right things.

The result against Reading should now be forgotten but the game itself learnt from. If we take note and improve our game I feel we have a good chance of making the top half of the table this season.

PS: Bad decision giving me the shirts because now they will be modelled on me! (TA)

Squad: W Pigden, C Smith, J Nurse, J Goldsmith, M Killen, A Jarrat, A Mowat, R Heath, A Speculand, B Huntley, T Alford, S Broadway, S Butt, N Gough

MOTM: W Pigden (12 goal hero)
TFC: T Alford (hygiene issues)

Next match: Away vs. Ashford

Mens 2s vs. Wimbledon 3s: Lost 1-3

So, the first game of the season against the team who were promoted with us last year - and surely our first points too? We started off like a thunderbolt frankly, and were it not for a couple of squandered opportunities in front of goal, could have been 3-0 up in the first five minutes. Then, with our clear superiority firmly lodged in our minds, we fell apart. We lost shape, concentration and composure and with them went possession, territory and the upper hand.

Throughout the game Wimbledon had maybe 6 short corners and buried three; we had twice as many and converted one; a poor ration by anyone's standards.

In a match marred by four yellow cards and four uninspired goals, we came out second best and knew fine well we should have done better. Not a match for the memoirs. (TS)

Squad: Sheldon B, Robby L, Guy H, Matt G, Mike K, Graham F, Chris C, Gavin, Andy J, Andy P, Darren M, Dave C, Tim S

Scorers: Tim Sylvester
MOTM: Graham Fotherington
TFC: Tim Sylvester
Umpires: Aido and one of theirs (cheers Aido)

Next match: Home vs. Spencer 3s, 1400hrs, DC

Mens 3s vs. St. Albans Senators: Lost 1-3

No match report.

Next match: Away vs. Spencer 5s

Tornados vs. Diamonds: Drew 2-2

Inter-club games are always hard. Particularly when it's the Tornados versus Diamonds. The team that denied us promotion last year by taking four points off us was no less keen this year to turn us over.

But we were pretty confident; a reasonably strong performance at Surbiton (a poor side) meant we thought we could push on with some proper hockey. And twenty minutes in, two up (two very sweet strikes by an under-the-weather Pully from Tom's slip Left at a short, leaving Schoolie a little embarrassed. Twice.), we looked like we were going in the right direction.

A more sensible person might just leave it there. Because it turned into a horror show. Missed chances, failed opportunities, poor decisions, etc etc. We limped into half time 2:1, having conceded the usual scrappy goal that hit just about everything (Bailey's chest, Alex's stick etc etc) on its way in. Strong words in the break meant we came out fighting...

No we didn't. We conceded the game with poor performances wherever you looked. Although the Diamonds second goal was the result of a clear foot, the misplaced Corinthian spirit of our defence was strange and, to be honest, it was the least they deserved.

A good point for the Diamonds - it's hard to see how a high tempo team, when it plays to its strengths of direct hockey, will get in the same trouble it stumbled into last year - and a dreadful performance from us. There are questions hanging over the Tornados squad and their desire. Our joint top scorer is the Right back. Fortunately, a game on Saturday against Spencer will give everyone the opportunity to show how seriously they want to take the season. Full credit to the Diamonds - and all the more pressure on us for the return leg in the festive season. (CK)

Squad: Bailey, Charlie, Pully, Alex, Tom, MJ, Little Fish (Whitebait?), Toby, Rich F, Wilsh, Rob, Young Ben, James

Scorers: Mark Pulford (2)
MOTM: Alex/Charlie
TFC: James
Umpires: Coleman and Aido. Many thanks.

Next match: Home vs. Spencer 6s, 1100hrs, JAGS

Diamonds vs. Tornados: Drew 2-2

This was "intra-club match lite" - plenty of commitment, but without the bite of previous encounters. It almost looked game over after 15 minutes, with our defence kicking themselves for failing to sort out runners at short corners after we had allowed Pully to sink two identical ones.

But heads didn't drop, rather we imposed ourselves on the game and steadily worked our way back into it. As usual, we found chances scarce on the ground, but just before half time took full advantage or our first short of the season to halve the deficit, Adam slipping the ball to Sam to flick it in - heck, you can even see the action here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ggt-mDE96a0

We looked comfortable on the ball throughout the second half, but lacked the imagination to break through over the 23 with any regularity. But the Tornados were now defending their lead from a deeper base, and Nick scored from a goalmouth scramble with 15 minutes to go, drawing the game level. That was the signal for the Tornados to push us back for the next few minutes, during which we had to survive a nail-biting series of short corners. But we held on, and in the last five minutes looked like we might even take all three points.

Overall, we showed great character against one of the strongest sides in the division. Trem, making his Diamonds debut, was solid at the back (Don't worry, the JAGS bobble gets us all eventually), and Graeme & Sam put in particularly fine performances to break up the oppo's attack down their right. (BD)

Squad: James Fuller, Tom Illingworth, Trem Parvin, Graeme Evans, Adam Smith, Marc Antoine, Stephen Ireton, Sam Younger, Oliver Walton, Irfan Begg, Tim Harris, Joe Del Greco, Nick Allen

Scorers: Sam Younger, Nick Allen
Umpires: Aidan Brock & Chris Coleman

Next match: Away vs. Reading Renegades

Royals vs. Spencer Spitfires: Drew 0-0

Not a usual scoreline, the match filled with half- and snuffed-out attacks, a little lack of structure and a smattering of getting-to-know-each-other. Perhaps no mistake that the area in which we seemed to work best - the spankingly clean sheeted defence - was occupied by the evergreen Keith Howick and the ever-sharper Tim Smith, who have performed on-off together in defence since before the fabled merger of Tulse Hill and the mighty, mighty Dulwich.

Elsewhere we showed some promise; given time, we will prevail. (MA)

Squad: Jon Bayliss (c), Sheldon Braithwaite, Keith Howick, Tim Smith, Ollie Norris, Ben Protheroe, Edward Taylor Jones, Robbie Fleck, Rob Thomas, Ollie Furlong, Marc Antoine, Tim Harris, Mark Annear (13)

Scorers: Many tried, but none succeeded
MOTM: Shared between the goalkeeping prowess of Sheldon Braithwaite and the combative Ollie Furlong in midfield, with a special mention for Keith Howick.
TFC: A tight call - Marc Antoine eventually triumphed by way of dual penalties for only managing to identify his shin pads by smell, and of spoiling his ballot paper with doodles. Dishonourable mentions for Mark Annear (going off injured at a crucial period in the match/screaming like a girl when doing so), Iain "turncoat" Leverett (turning out for the other side), and Ollie "non-secret ballot" Furlong.
Umpires: Billy Dowie (and one of theirs)

Next match: Home vs. Indian Gymkhana 4s, 1230hrs, JAGS

Saracens vs. H&W Thirsts: Won 1-0

A grey and blustery Saturday afternoon saw the mighty Saracens take to the field for their second league fixture ever. Billy started with the now traditional warm up of "Right, let's go round and do names" followed by "Do we have any defenders? Who wants to go upfront?" before launching into a game plan involving "a simple squashed diamond with a floating man" formation that left everyone slightly bemused.

Still, we were not about to let tactics get in the way of some Total Hockeyİ which saw us camped in the opposition 25 for about 30 minutes of the first half. In a textbook display, we looked comfortable playing the ball across the back before surging up whichever flank we fancied. One of their players got so frustrated with our dominance that he attempted to tackle Rob from behind (and bizarrely under his armpit), which resulted in a face-full of stick and a trip to hospital. However we seemed unable to convert the pressure into goals; a couple of short corners went begging and countless waves of surging red-shirted attack resulted in shots going just wide, so we went into half time still at 0 - 0.

The second half was pretty similar to the first, with the opposition content to twat the ball up the pitch from their 16 and let us come at them again. They stayed level through only sheer luck, with a particular highlight being their keeper somehow trapping a screaming shot between his legs, but having no idea about it and turning around to look for the ball in the back of his net. However we finally converted one of our chances when yet another ball was played into their D, where Ben picked it up nicely and laid it off around their keeper to Viren who calmly slotted it home. 1 - 0. Our defence then held firm for the final 10 minutes to secure the 3 points we thoroughly deserved.

With 2 wins from 2 games we have started with a bang and are second in the league only on goal difference. 8 seasons until we're in the Premiership!(OC)

Squad: Joe (GK), Ben, James, Ladi, Mark H, Oli C, Rupert, Ali, Rob, Viren, Billie, Nick

Scorers: Viren
MOTM: Ali for his superb work in taking the ball off their centre forward any time they even thought about attacking
TFC: No particularly deserving candidates due to stellar performances all round, which means it falls to Rupert who managed to pull a muscle despite Billy's extensive warm up routine

Next match: Away vs. Richmond Redoubtables

Womens Section

Womens 1s vs. Henley 1s: Drew 1-1

This week's match report is in memory of my beloved cat that died after being hit by a car during the week.

Hmmmm. In was a case of everything went wrong from start to finish. None of us got there on time due to road works on the M4 / performing surgery overnight / being out on the lash / not knowing the directions / leaving enough time to teleport to the game but not drive there / having to be somewhere else / suffering from swine flu. Add into the mix that the pitch we were playing on was knee deep in sand and it is fair to say it was a shambolic warm up.

After all that we didn't start well but yet after some "interesting" passages of play found ourselves 1 nil up pretty early on. The second half was much, much better but unfortunately we all got very wound up by a few random umpiring decisions and Henley deservedly equalised. We all got rather moody with each other, Will and the umpires obviously.

But nobody could have been prepared for the riot that ensued after we had a goal disallowed 2 minutes from time. Everyone was called everything under the sun and the curse of the lemon drizzle cake reared its ugly head again...not a moment to be proud of but a point is better than nothing. Roll on next week! (EJB)

Squad: Dulcie Davies, Alex Crawford, Kath Sowter, Clare Byrne, Jen Thomas, Annabel Owen, Rachel Wheeler, Faye Billing, EJ Barry, Rebecca Jacobs, Angela Sheaden and Bettina Wolff

Scorers: EJ Barry

Next match: Home vs. Trojan Ladies 2s, 1230, DC

Womens 2s vs. Old Kingstonians 1s: Won 3-2

Mid-week: various team members were pondering Saturday's fixture with quiet confidence, totting up the 3 points and eagerly anticipating a THD goal fest. OKs had been soundly beaten the week before and the intention was to administer similar treatment this week.

While we were still in the process of doing so, the whistle blew and a minute or so later Tash had scored our first goal. Perhaps it wouldn't be an uphill struggle after all. Not so.

They were 2-1 up at half time; first, Rach, in her new starring role, hadn't quite managed to engage the attacker early enough and then I failed to get across to the attacker in time; second, Olivia stuck her leg out, valiantly and athletically, but managed to deflect it into the goal rather than away to one side.

We started the second half well, however: two goals in the first 10-15 minutes - a nice open play effort from Cathy and a straight strike short corner perfectly deflected into the goal by the defender (but I'll count that as one of mine anyway, thank you). Apart from a few dangerous moments we were also much better organised at the back. Rach's skill as a geographer/ cartographer/ organisational guru meant that she had mastered her new role in no time at all and thoroughly deserved her player of the match votes.

Must also mention: Biba's sterling performance whilst in the grip of pain; Rosie's last game before heading off to St John's College Oxford; several POTM votes for Speedy Gonzales - together she and Jeavs make a great attacking duo.

Must play down: my attempt to explain one of the new rules - wrongly - to 5 members of the oppo while the ball was in play. (Note to self: STFU next time). [Kato]

Squad Olivia, Kato, Rosie, Traffs, Muldoon, Jeavs, Biba, Hattie, Road Runner, TTT, Cathy

Scorers: Tash Barnes, Kate Selway, Cathy Volsteedt
MOTM: Traffs
TFC: Jacob Nurse, who gave Steve from the Men's 1s a good pre-warm-up warm-up
Umpires: Lou Campbell

Next match: Away vs. Wanderers 3s

Womens 3s: No game

Next match: Away vs. Old Georgians 1s, 1330hrs

Womens 4s vs. Old Kingstonians 2s: Won 2-0

No match report.

Next match: Home vs. Epsom 4s, 1530hrs, DC

Womens 5s vs. Old Georgians 2s: Lost 0-6

In hindsight, perhaps the antisocial 4.30pm (in Weybridge!) pushback time should have given us an inkling. The new look fives braved South West London Saturday traffic to head across town, buoyed by our solid performance in last week's match and some effective practice in training that week.

The long journey must have had a soporific effect, because despite some effective warm-ups and wise words from Ferrett, who kindly accompanied us across town for some pitch-side advice, we started sluggishly, and they scored two quick goals before we'd had time to think.

We spent most of the first half penned inside our own half, although when breaks did come, particularly up the right, we put together some good passing, but were unable to find the required finish. After they got the third it was always going to be hard to recover, particularly as they appeared to have the hockey equivalent of a Rottweiler playing for them, who seemed to dislike anyone on our team looking at the ball, let alone touching it.

Ferrett's half time team talk spurred us on, though, and we started the second half with much more determination. I can't really remember much more than that, however, having been cracked on the nose with the ball not long after and spending the rest of the half on the sidelines watching over the top of an ice-pack. I was joined soon after by Lucy who received a whopping crack on the hand - lucky we had two subs - and we wondered whether there would be anyone left on the pitch by the end of the match. Fortunately we escaped further serious injury, and played much more solidly through to the final whistle.

Honourable mention for goalie Charlotte and her MOTM appearance - despite what the score line might suggest she did a cracking job, receiving applause from the oppo for some of her efforts. A thoroughly bad-tempered game which has left us determined to bounce back and play the way we know we can. (Kate Straker)

Squad Lucy Heggarty, Sioned Horton-Evans, Khalida Ismail, Katie McPhillimay, Rachael Miskin, Sarah Newitt, Sarah Riggs, Katie Stone, Kate Straker, Andrea Vicary, Charlotte Whitehead, Sunni, Megan Youngers.

Scorers: None
MOTM: Charlotte Whitehead
Umpires: Old G's supplied both

Next match: Away vs. Purley Walcountians 2s

Womens 6s vs. Surbiton 7s: Lost 2-8

After missing out on our first chance to take on the new season last week (although a walkover win is not a bad start), we were all raring to go when the first half whistle blew. In the back, a blend of old, new and borrowed (Helen volunteered herself as the goalkeeper), and we are off with some beautiful passes between the centres and forwards.

We pressed well and were passing beautifully during the first half especially with some great skills from our newbies. Surbiton sneaked a goal passed us but we were undefeated and battled on and Jenna scored one back. Some tense play followed but unfortunately a whippy Surbiton scored again.

With a half time team talk, our minds were focused, and Bridget's beautiful shot into goal raised our spirits once more. The opposition must have had red bull at the break and we were convinced the ref was adding extra time to each half. Alas, we were unable to sustain our performance from earlier on and the opposition knocked some classy goals in the final few minutes. The final score was rather harsh and would have been worse if it wasn't for our sub goalie saving two amazing shots.

Heads up high, it was a decent match and a good sign for the rest of the season!(JB)

Mixed Section

Dragons vs. Optimists: Lost 2-3

It was sunny. We were excitable. We pass it around quite well in our own half, but didn't quite have the cutting edge to score. We conceded three, having left George in goal painfully over-exposed, particularly for the first two, before getting a more organised, and more focussed, approach that led to two goals. The first has rather slipped from my memory. Sorry. The second is likely to stay with me for the rest of my life, because it involved...

MJ breaks down the left. He holds the stick in two hands. He beats his man. He's about 5 yards from the Byline. He crosses a quick, clean square ball. To someone in his own team.

Snowy swept it in. But by that time I wasn't looking, I was checking if hell had frozen over.

Late humour provided by a cry of "Unlucky, Optimists." But it passed. (CK)
