Match Reports | Subs | Awards Dinner
It was not a great week in the history of Tulse Hill and Dulwich as only 4 out of the 13 teams won on the day. The only Men's side to win was the Saracens, keeping up their outstanding 100% in the league. The Ladies' 1s beat Trojans by one goal and the Ladies' 5s brought home 3 points, 3 goals and a clean sheet in a great bounce-back from their defeat last week. Emily Elgood writes enthusiastically below.
The team of the week is the Ladies' 4s with their 5-0 trouncing of Epsom at Fortress DC. Congratulations to them but we will have to imagine what a good game it was, as there is no match report.
The big game next week is when the Royals and Saracens face off at Crystal Palace. Intra-club games seem to disregard the form book and are always hotly-contested. Till next week!

This weeks match reports from the THD Teams in action.
Reports by: Chris Smith, Tim Sylvester, Tim Jones, Charles Krasun, Billy Dowie, Mark Annear, Oliver Clark, Lucy Muldoon, Emily Elgood, Mags Aylward
Mens Section
Mens 1s vs. Ashford: Lost 3-0
Full of optimism following the win against Chichester the week before and some lessons learnt from Reading. THD took on Ashford, a team that also struggled last season. Hopes were high.
However, despite a strong start by THD, Ashford took the lead after their centre forward was gifted the ball on the 25 and made no mistake. As half time approached THD received a 'new rule' yellow, and confusion of the new rules reigned throughout this game as both umpires gave conflicting accounts of the rule book, Ashford in the end getting 4 yellow cards.
2nd half and THD had plenty of possession and controlled the tempo of the game with Ashford defending with all 11 behind the ball. However THD were not canny enough to unlock this defence and could not muster anything notable in the 25. Increasing attacks left THD exposed at the back, conceding 2 more, one from a flick and another tap in, leaving the score 3-0.
A very disappointing win and THD should easily have won if we showed an ounce of composure and actually listened to Coach Hoppo. Once again THD's inability to create any chances against weak teams has cost them dear. (CS)
Squad: W.Pigden, C.Smith, R.Banwell, J.Goldsmith, F.Nurse, J.Nurse, M.Hann, R.Heath, J.Huntley, S.Broadway, A.Speculand, T.Alford, J.Brewin, N.Gough
MOTM: Matt Hann
TFC: Chris Smith
Next match: Home vs. Purley Walcountians
Mens 2s vs. Spencer 3s: Lost 3-4
Saturday's match against a physical Spencer side, whilst still yielding no points, was our best performance to date. Just like last week, it looked from the first ten minutes that the match was going to be ours, as Spencer struggled to move forward and we attacked them with confidence and composure - unlike last week's collapse however, we maintained the focus for almost the full 70 minutes, with a few unfortunate lapses allowing the opposition to go home with all the points.
Again it was short corners that would prove our downfall, both attacking and defending. We scored three from the corners we were awarded compared to Spencer's two, but in terms of ratios, they would certainly be the happier team as we yet again failed to capitalise on our ability to win fouls in their D.
Overall, it was an entirely more encouraging performance against a team who were playing in the league above last year, and if we can play like that for the rest of the season, results will come our way. (TS)
Squad: Sheldon, Robby, Chris, Laurent, Matt, Gavin, Mike, Potty, Butty, Fez, Darren, Timmy, Will, Bungle
Scorers: Will (2), Timmy
MOTM: Fez
TFC: Tim Sylvester
Umpires: Paul Harvey and Si Wilshire (thanks guys)
Next match: Away vs. Reading 2As
Mens 3s vs. Spencer 5s: Lost 0-1
The greatest stories in human history have relied on a duality of protagonists as the canvass upon which the artwork of their glory and tragedy can be constructed. Athens versus Sparta; Rome versus Carthage; Axis powers versus allies; capitalist West against communist East. And so it was that the TH&D Mens 3s went out against Spencer 5s with one of the strongest line ups since the police had an identification parade at a Mr Universe competition. We had Snowing and foggy holding the midfield, Harrow taking a rare foray into the left flank and Sparky and Jules up front. Unfortunately for the readers of this report, your author was in a situation similar to that of a virgin marathon runner - he was unsure of his place, but (waking 15 minutes before push back) definitely behind, and expected to hurry up. Sadly, that didn't happen, and so Frankie got a starting place on his debut.
With a full side of 11, the enemy was engaged.
What happened in my absence I can only speculate. Foggy was voted MOTM and so I imagine he played well. Any more detail than that and I'd simply be making it up; there were some beautifully placed aerials from the back, free flowing passes cutting through Spencer's defence and shots on goal placed with the type of accuracy last seen when Lee Harvey Oswald got angry at the world from a grassy knoll. We went a goal down in the first half.
However, after a positive half-time team talk from the skipper we went out and were a different side during the final 35 minutes of the match. Although we were unable to finish, with the score remaining 1-0 at the final whistle, we were able to take many positives from the game. We started to control play, holding onto possession and switching the ball into space. Foggy dominated the centre of the park. Spencer hardly threatened our 25. With only one point from the first 3 games we have our work cut out, but if we play the way we know we can we'll soon be dominating this league.
Squad: Steve, Wes, Tim, John, Alex, Foggy, Snowy, Sparky, Nick Harris, Nick Marsh, Jules, Frankie
Scorers: None
MOTM: Foggy
TFC: Tim
Most Random Mention of Wes' Mum: Wes
Next match: Home vs. Reading 3s, 1100hrs, JAGS
Tornados vs. Spencer 6s: Drew 2-2
Tornados had much to prove after a disappointing club derby. The same result from a completely different game was probably fair value. Under pressure for the whole game against a team that bossed the midfield battle, somehow with 20 mins to go we were winning. We conceded on the stroke of half time, with a strike from a short corner taking just enough of Charlie's stick to curve it over a despairing Bailey. After half time, a frustrating period of counter attacking somehow saw us 2-1 up, James beautifully taking a great chance to beat the keeper and Rob crashing home a bouncing ball from fully 3" and we looked like we might repeat our double mugging of last year.
We conceded again from another short at some point. It came off Charlie again. twat.
So honours even. Probably fairly, with both teams grateful for a draw but wondering if they ought to have won. The obvious development opportunity would be to pass to people in our team rather than the opposition. But if we do that, we might actually be alright. In the mean time, the display of guts and effort was a strong response to angry words the week before.
Reading next week presents a good opportunity to build further on this. But a positive week. (CK).
Squad: Si, Pully, Charlie, Alex, Tom, Toby, Fence, MJ, Wilsh, Rob, little Ben, James
Scorers: James Casey, Rob Tuer
MOTM and TFC: who knows. But i vote for Charlie and Charlie respectively.
Next match: Away vs. Reading Renegades
Diamonds vs. Reading Renegades 4s: Lost 2-4
As the week before, we went down 0-2 to two short corners before we started showing any real commitment, but this time, inexplicably, we never found enough to match the opposition, who were first to the loose ball and much faster than us in turning defence into attack.
Shortly into the second half, Trem sank our first short of the game, accompanied by that heart-warmingly vicious thud of the ball as it slowed down suddenly from 215 mph to zero on connecting with the backboard. That brought us back to 1-2, but we failed to build on it, indeed only James' acrobatics behind us restricted them to a couple more. At 1-4, with 10 minutes to go, the culmination of our best move of the game saw Irfan skipping along the top of the D (this time WITH the ball) before offloading to Sam, who cracked it in first time from just inside the circle. But it was all a bit late to change the result, and for every good chance we had to narrow the gap, they had two of their own to stretch it. (BD)
Squad: James Tabor, Tom Illingworth, Trem Parvin, Graeme Evans, Billy Dowie, Adam Smith, Marc Antoine, Stephen Ireton, Sam Younger, Irfan Begg, Joe Del Greco, Rob Thomas
Scorers: Trem & Sam
Umpires: Both Theirs
Next match: Home vs. Wimbledon 6s, 1230hrs, JAGS
Royals vs. Indian Gymkhana 4s: Walkover to THD Royals 5-0
Challenged some weeks ago with a charge of superfluous verbosity that would have left Polonius thirsting for another bite of the proverbial cherry, your correspondent was beholden to shorten the length and words of the weekly tome, and. be more succinct.
In response, last week's report bottomed out at a mere 82 words, and the response was: "are you taking a different proverbial? - yes please, a bit longer!"
Alas this week Indian Gymkhana pulled out of our match against them, leaving yours truly searching for something to write about tumbleweed blanching slowly in the North Dulwich sunshine.
Not that talking about a vacuum is impossible - after all, the noise of the falling tree in the empty forest has spawned an encyclopaedia of thought tested only by the sound of one hand clapping. All the same, we would hope that the words are not only sensible but, above all, relevant.
And so there you have this week's missive - the story of where we get to today: improving with every match, but every match leaves something to work on. (MA)
Squad: Jon Bayliss (c), Ben Slater (c?), Ollie Norris, Edward Taylor Jones, Robbie Fleck, Rob Thomas, Ollie Furlong, Adam Bond, Steve Walsh, James Perrott, Oli Carruthers (11)
Scorers: Up for grabs
MOTM: In abeyance
TFC: In abeyance
Umpires: Aidan Brock and maybe Mark Annear (if they hadn't brought one)
Next match: Home vs. THD Saracens, 1330hrs, Crystal Palace Bar Pitch
Saracens vs. Richmond Redoutables: Won 3-1
Another week, another win, another opposition player hospitalised by Rob "The Enforcer" Hughes. Business as usual for the Saracens.
What to say about the game itself? There were periods of brilliance where we would pass the ball sublimely around and end up with a decent ball across their D, but also a few periods where we went to sleep a bit and started passing the ball to their 2 angry South African forwards who were by far their most threatening players. Luckily their midfield consisted of a twelve year old and the mad professor from "Back to the Future" so we managed to keep them mostly contained to the middle third.
Nick managed to convert one of our crosses so we took the lead 1 - 0. They then had a sustained period of pressure including hitting the post a couple of times before one crept in to level it at 1 - 1. After the break we started playing hockey again and Ladi put an excellent touch onto a ball on the P spot to put it through the keeper's legs and us back into the lead. He also deserves a special mention for his excellent goal celebration - hopefully a lot more of those to come! Nick then hammered home another decent effort to cement our lead. 3 - 1. Job done. Top of the table. Bring on the Royals! (OC)
Squad: James Fuller (GK), Charlie, James Taylor, Ladi, Ollie C, Nick Weller, Ian T (C), Ben Langford, Rob Hughes, Ali Bulloch, Adrian, Adam Bond and Robert Thomas
Scorers: Nick (2), Ladi
MOTM: Aido for his sterling work at the back, including a textbook diving tackle followed by loud protestations of "Of course I wasn't diving at you, idiot"
TFC: Ian, for deciding that running for a lovely ball played through to him was not how a captain plays the game
Umpires: Mark Annear
Next match: Home vs. THD Royals, 1330hrs, Crystal Palace Bar Pitch

Womens 1s vs. Trojans 2s: Won 2-1
No match report.
Next match: Away vs. Oxford University 1s
Womens 2s vs. Wanderers 3s: Lost 0-1
We were up early for a Saturday with a 09:15 push off and without our captain. This was never the best start we could have had..
However we did have a trusty coach and his 2 sidekicks (Gemma and her bump), so we had a good warm and were ready to take on a rivals Wanderers. The pitch let us down, it was horrible very sandy and very slow. We had to adapt quickly and clearly our big hits were not getting anywhere fast.
Will repositioned us on the pitch and encouraged us to take on what we have been doing in training. Some lovely 2 v 1's were happening up front and we had all the game and gave wanderers all the pressure.
Us lot at the back were keeping things together and seem to get the ball out of our danger area fairly quickly, if not with a few close shaves. Kato strong and powerful as ever, Ellie just having a stormer as our new player, traffs keeping her cool and Buxton putting in some awesome tackles.
As team though we were just not quick enough off the mark, we were slow and it was taking time to put things together. Wanders allowed us to be like this but often caught us off guard and took advantage of our slow pace.
Frustrating moments watching from the back when we could see open goals and us just not putting the ball in the back of the net. However wanders did break and put the defenders in our place then put one passed us.
Unfortunately this was the decider and we could not get one even to equalise. A frustrating game for players and supporters. Obviously we will get them next time.............as we always do. (LM)
Squad Cathy, Buxton, Kato, Muldoon, Jeavons, Traffs, Tash, Ellie, Olivia, Beddoes, Harriet, Road runner

Womens 5s vs. Purley Walcountians 2s: Won 3-0
Another beautiful day as we headed to Purley, a little down beat from last weeks result but keen to put that behind us and get a win under our belt. We came out looking strong, dominating the attacking play from the very beginning. Short corners were in abundance (thank you Gemma for the training last week) and the ball being stopped on the line by a foot after Rachael's sweep in from the left post led to an early nerve
wracking penalty flick. Fear passed from face to face, a flick is not something we often come across, and without any practice Vicky bravely stepped up to the mark. A great flick unfortunately saved. Spurred on by this, some great passing up the pitch soon after led to our first goal hit in beautifully by Vicky. Another goal fought in before half time and a third slipped in from a rebound soon after put us in a good leading position and eager for more.
The second half was really promising with some great play, a lot more communication and some brilliant crosses into the D. We did start to flag slightly towards the end and Purley kept fighting but we managed to hold on to our 3-0 victory. Finally the Ladies 5s had their first win in over a season! A great effort from everyone. (EE)
Squad: Lucy Heggarty, Khalida Ismail, Rachael Miskin, Sarah Riggs, Katie Stone, Kate, Charlotte Whithead, Megan Youngers, Laura, Flo, Vicky
Stanley and Emily Elgood.
Scorers: Vicky Stanley (1), Emily Elgood (2)
MOTM: Shared between Emily Elgood and Katie Stone
Umpires: Aidan (and one from Purley)
Next match: Home vs. London Wayfarers 4s, 1030hrs, Crystal Palace Bar Pitch
Womens 6s vs. Old Freeman's Women's 1s: Lost 1-10
10-1....Where did it all go wrong, not the greatest result of all time, though by Thursday we had 9 players and no goalkeeper, so to have 12 by Saturday - thanks to Oliva and Jo for volunteering! (and no goalkeeper...and no Kit!) Was definitely a positive!
Before pushback the opposition very kindly lent us an old kit from their Mens teams and Bridget bravely stepped up for her first time in goal. As the match started we were 2 players down due to traffic problems (fines to follow!). Match started, some goals went in. Our extra players arrived...some more goals went in. Helen decided that today would be her debut on the score sheet and hit a great goal in, so her first of many to come I'm sure! Then some more goals against.
Back to where it went wrong, I think we are like "Miss Frank" in the X factor, individually brilliant, but do we believe we can perform as a group? If we are to avoid another "John and Edward" style performance, we need to go back to our passing game.
Continuing our promise to drink more than the opposition in their own clubhouse this season, we certainly were true to our word, the post match analysis continued in a pub in Waterloo where we devised a fining system for latecomers, falling on pitch, and some other reasons that are completely irrelevant to this match report.
We go away from this match with some important points to note:
Leave the house earlier when driving.
Southeastern trains do not have toilets, bear in mind after Away beers.
We need a goalie, and a goalie kit, mostly to avoid parents covering their kids ears when Bridget exclaims on the train "UGH I'm covered in man sweat. and not in a good way." (MA)
