Goalkeepers in Junior Hockey

Goalkeepers in Junior Hockey

Following legal advice and comments from England Hockey Southern Counties have withdrawn their rule changes forcing goalkeepers in junior competitions to wear a full kit. In its place they have made a number of policy statements and recommendations, these include:

  • all of it junior teams will only use a fully kitted keeper

  • amending all of its junior competition regulations (including leagues run under its jurisdiction) to stipulate that all teams must have a fully kitted keeper

  • strong recommending all those not covered by the above to adopt a similar policy
    updating their Child Protection Statement

The full statement and the new child protection document are available on the county website.

Report for THD Committee meeting 08.01.07

The juniors continues to be very successful with more children coming to have fun and learn how to play hockey. Since my last report:

U15 boys and U15 each played in England Hockey Cup competitions.

Both are now in the Plate – girls at Home to Tonbridge Wells on 18th Feb, boys have a bye in the first round so will play on on 4th March

Took part in our first “U9 and U11 festival” at Epsom. Good fun, lots of children taking part and Club training still taking place for those not involved. It is our turn to host on 25th Feb.

U16 game v Wimbledon – very close but lost. Able to give lots who hadn’t been able to play in the Cup game a chance to play.

Christmas tournament – very enjoyable and successful.

Rosie Le Voir and Alex Pennington were awarded their Club awards that they did not receive at the dinner.

Christmas party at Clubhouse with main organisation by one of the parents with help from others. Again hugely successful with young and old attending and really nice to be complimented by members from the tennis section upon their behaviour and how well it was being run.

Met last week to review the first half of the season and impressed ourselves with how many of the targets we had set ourselves we had achieved such as: membership numbers, number of qualified coaches, running of courses such as Leadership Award and involving parents and young coaches. We still have much to do but feel that all is going well although we would really like to increase further the number of qualified coaches involved and committed.

We have started work on the putting together of the paperwork required for Clubs first but feel that we need to put it on hold for a while and just keep everything running smoothly as over the next few weeks, we have various of our coaching / administrative staff missing.

Planning to increase amount to parental involvement and have an end of season “presentation of awards” – format yet to be decided – which will include the first presentation of the Nick Chalk award.

Goalkeepers: Rule change for 2007-08

The Rules of Hockey 2007-08 have been changed significantly in respect to goalkeeping. For a precise description please refer to Rule 4 Players Clothing and Equipment and Rule 10 Conduct of Play: Goalkeepers.

In summary these rules relax the requirement for a goalkeeper to have fully protective equipment comprised of at least headgear, leg guards and kickers and permit no goalkeeper at all.

The Southern Counties HA believes that this relaxation is inappropriate in junior hockey. The Association notes that EH has already stated that Mini Hockey must have fully equipped goalkeepers.

In accordance with its general principles of child protection and duty of care the Association therefore makes the following local rule regarding all junior hockey played within its jurisdiction.

With effect from 1 January 2007 each team in a junior match taking place within the jurisdiction of the Southern Counties Hockey Association MUST have on the field at all times a fully equipped goalkeeper as specified in Rule 4.4a of the Rules of Hockey 2007-08. This means a kicking back is NOT permitted and neither shall a junior match take place with only eleven field players.

For the purposes of this local rule junior hockey is defined as any match where the players are defined within the league or competition rules as being Under 18 on a specified date irrespective of the actual age of all or any of the players in a match.

Mid-Term Report

Mid-Term Report

The Juniors go from strength to strength. We had anticipated that there would be an increase in numbers this year and had planned for this by setting out to recruit more adult coaches and crucially more young volunteers. We could only deal with extra numbers if we had the personnel to provide a top quality experience for the new young players. In the event, we have gathered together an experienced group of adult coaches. We have been joined by a Level 2 coach, Paul Sheppard; Snep, who worked with the tinys last year has stayed for the whole three hours; Michelle has brought her daughter and coached for two hours; Steve P. and Alex have been around for the whole morning, except when Alex is off at county trials; Ferret has been a regular helper; last but by no means least, Marilyn has overseen the registers and sorted out general administration admirably – the first batch of shirts should arrive just after half term, so I’m told. (Hope, I haven’t missed anyone out!)

The number of young volunteers has exceeded our wildest expectations. There have been 12 in all over the first six weeks of the season. One aim was to have all our coaches, both adults and children, qualified in some way. To achieve this we ran an England Hockey Young Leadership course in early October attended by 11 of our volunteers. This is a magnificent achievement and shows the commitment of the young people who have come to work within the club. So, our thanks must go to Hamza, Ed, Liam, Rosie L, Alex, Conor, Hannah, Rosie C, Lucy May, Lois, and Hamish. Your work has been invaluable.

Now to the players! We have had new players turn up every week so far. Word is spreading fast that we are providing a fun learning experience for young hockey players and we are beginning to attract players from other clubs in the area. The word is going out that THDJ is a well-run club and that the coaching is of a very good standard. At the last count, we have over 120 players registered with the Juniors. Roughly, we have 30 under 9s (10 of whom are under 7), 30 under 11s and 60 over 11/13s. We will only get bigger. We are very impressed with the calibre of the players we are attracting and the future of the club is in safe hands.

Finally, we are beginning to recruit parental help. Parents now run the coffee bar upstairs in the warmth of the Pavilion where we provide tea, coffee, biscuits, Sunday papers and even cake from time to time. Others are taking over the admin roles and we are advertising for team managers and social secretaries. The range of positive comments is too long to recite (sorry if that sounds like blowing our own trumpet, but it’s true). What parents find most important is that we are able to provide one to one coaching for children who have limited experience of playing the game and for players of greater potential.

So, there it is. We planned for growth and it has happened in spades. We are very proud of what has been achieved and see this as just the beginning. If you would like to be a part of all this then please come along. If you are a member of the club with children and would like them to start playing then here we are. I have taken some time to explain what we are doing and what has been achieved because I’m not sure that many in the club are aware of what is happening on a Sunday morning. Well, now you know. If you would like to join us then you would be most welcome.

Donation from Deutsche Bank

The season 2005-6 saw much change in the junior section of Tulse Hill & Dulwich Hockey Club. Through the hard work, in particular of the late Nick Chalk, Marilyn Walker, Steve Pennington and Peter Berman, the beginning of a structure development plan proved very successful. As the season progressed, more and more children form the local London Boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark began to join the program. Most of these were in the Under 12 age group, and by Christmas the numbers had expanded to around 100. By the end of the season we had experienced a growth rate of 70% and there were approximately 120 players on our books.

In light of this success and the need to progress the Junior Development program forward, we are pleased to announce that we have received a monetary donation from Deutsche Bank to support the program. This is only a donation and does not in anyway represent a sponsorship.

Sunday Coaching Sessions

Sunday Coaching Sessions

On the first Sunday of the season the junior club had 80 players, 6 adult coaches and 6 young leaders. A magnificient start at our new venue of Alleyn's school. The really encouraging thing is that all three sessions had new faces as well as those who have returned having attended last season.

One parent commented, "This now has the look and feel of a real hockey club and I know that my child will be well looked after."

We have worked on the structure, organisation and timings of sessions over the summer and with the aim of making hockey fun for players of every standard. The number of coaches and volunteers that we have means that we can give kids individual attention if they need it. I am positive that this is only the start and we shall only grow and grow.
